dhockster 0 Posted December 18, 2009 It looks good, but I fell for the Watchmen hype, and holy hell, that was an absolute sh1t piece of crap. My kids will probably want to see it, though. What's the word on kids seeing it (9 and 12)? I saw the movie last night, not because of the hype, but because it was getting so many positive reviews (which critics hate to give to big budget movies). The story is interesting enough to keep you involved in the movie, but the effects are what truly make this movie worth seeing in the movie theatre. The Color, CGI, and 3D are the best I have seen, and they are so well done that you tend to forget you are watching CGI. As for kids, There are about 3 S words, and some battlescene violence, but nothing overly graphic. I don't think there is anything in there that a 9 year old could not handle. I think kids who are tuned into video games will love the look of this movie.

MicktheGreat 1 Posted December 19, 2009 Needed a break from work today, so I decided to go see Avatar. CONS: --Dialogue is pretty bad. --About 20 minutes too long. --Awkward CGI quasi-sex scene (doesn't show anything but still awkward). --The 3D takes awhile to get used to (and might give you a headache). PROS: --Plot is OK. Not great, not terrible. Just OK. --Acting is solid for the most part. --Some really good action scenes (particularly the last 30 minutes). --The CGI is fantastic. The created world is immersive. Plus, the CGI characters start to feel like real actors about midway through the movie (which is probably the greatest compliment to this movie). A lot of the reviews are touting the revolutionary CGI, and I took that as typical review hyperbole. But...having seen Avatar, the CGI & special effects claims are pretty much true. I think it's worth seeing Avatar if you like action movies with a sci-fi bent. But if you're looking for a "deep" movie with superb dialogue and nuanced character development, then you should probably skip it. If you are interested in Avatar, I think it's probably best to see it in the theater (in spite of the expense) because I'm not sure that its "epic" look/feel would really hold up watching it at home. Overall, I'd give it a B-.

I think I misspoke a bit earlier. The dialogue in Avatar was subpar, but not Michael Bay bad (which is it's own category of bad). And the plot itself was actually decent. Overall, like I said in my original post, Avatar is a decent enough sci-fi action flick. If that's what you're expecting heading into the theater, you probably won't be disappointed. And it's certainly better than any Michael Bay films that I can think of off the top of my head. But, what do I know? Feel free to continue to add your own (un)informed insight on the subject. Giants Fan 85 Posted December 19, 2009 I saw an interview with what's his face .... the director dude that married the Terminator chick ... and apparently .... the McGuffin in this film is some kind of energy crystal. Apparently all these linguists were employed to develop this language .... and the .... ahem ... scientific name for this stuff is un-obtanium? Did I get that right? That's stupid. That's a stupid name. Instead of spending so much time developing a new language ... invest in a geologist to inform you .... that is a stupid name for some kind of rare crystal that can produce actual electric power. The Moz 71 Posted December 21, 2009 For a movie based strictly on special effects and meant to make you go WOW!! -- the movie hits a HR... Usually in Movies like this the acting is an afterthought ( it is an afterthought here as well ) but in Avatar the acting is actually decent - which is a result most likely of James Cameron. For an epic / action / sci - fi -- no movie since LOTR's has really been done this well. Now I can't wait to see how M.Night totally focks up the other Avatar movie. peenie 1,953 Posted December 23, 2009 i'm too lazy to write a peenie review for this board but here is my frau review from my nappy site: saw it last night at 9:35 pm, after work and after drinks, so y'all know i was tired as hell. i saw the movie in 3D in a completely packed movie house. okay, so the movie was the matrix (going in and out of the pandora world in a fake body) meets fern gully (save the rain forest) meets dances with wolves (white man learns to love the natives and tries to save them) meets random sony playstation game. i give it a B+. it was visually stunning. as a biologist i really liked what they did with the creatures in the film. my favorite parts of the movie were the interactions between the main character and the navi. all that war, get the ore from under the tree and fight the military was boring to me. i think it's a must see not because of the storyline, but because of the artistry. eta, michelle whatshername was hot, but hello! how many times does she have to play that same role? can she get some range please. OakHeadFootball 1 Posted December 23, 2009 I just got back from the 3-D version. Like others have said the story/plot was nothing super special in the sense that we have all seen the story a zillion times. Boy meets girl. She hates him at fist, then they fall in love end up saving the day despite numerous setbacks. That said, it wasn't bad just kinda predictable and the comic relief parts were dumbed down for the kiddies. Visually I give it a 11.5 out of 10, especially in 3-D. Just crazy, intense eye candy throughout the movie. I actually flinched to the side when a missile was headed at me. I liked the chick. She was wild looking and with a great body. Never before has a 10 foot tall blue animal woman made me feel like trying bestiality, well except for that one time in Vegas. Overall I give it 7/10 but the 3-D, the casting and the zillion dollars worth of CGI are what really carry this movie for me. Will be good on Bluray.

OakHeadFootball 1 Posted December 24, 2009 Ok, quick dumb question: The IMAX 3-D is better than the REAL LIFE 3-D? I have only been to the Imax once when i was 12, so i am not knowledgeable of the different versions. I read somewhere that the real 3-d was a better and that the imax was prone to giving headaches. I can't say what was better because I have only seen the "real" 3D. I thought it was rather impressive but it took me 5 -10 min to adjust to it. I almost felt like I was getting a headache at first but I didn't. My father made the comment when we were leaving that the 3D Movies they watched at Disney in Florida seemed to be more 3-D. Not sure if that is Imax or what. I am sure this has not helped you at all.
