People who use Mass Transit

Recommended Posts

Who do you focking do this every day? I have to use it here at Disney and it's a nightmare. Sitting there like a chump waiting on the bus packed with people. It's dirty smelly and just uncomfortable kind of like your mom.

I work from home now but used to do the three hour minimum round trip into Boston via the commuter rail...I only go in a few times a year now but if I had to do it again I'd quit. Would rather stock shelves than do that rat race crap again.

I live a little more than a mile from the L train to the downtown. Most of the time I would take the bus to the train. I could tolerate it for the 5-6 minute ride. No way could I deal with a normal length commute entirely by bus. That would suck.

I dont mind the train at all and prefer it to driving.

My ex wife and I used to commute from Fairfield, CT into NYC daily.

Drove car to the train station, train to grand central. She walked from there to Trump Tower, while I walked to 11 Penn Plaza or took a subway to Times Square and walked to 11 Penn.

It is definitely a focking grind, but having someone to talk to helped. Also got to read a lot of books back then.

How long did all of that take?

2-2.5 hours each way

Brutal...i would go nuts. But I guess its all in what you can get used to. My commute is 25 mins normally. I get anxious when it turns to 35 mins due to traffic.

It's really awful in too many ways to count. Feeling trapped, like you have no control, crowds of pushy inconsiderate people, standing room only sometimes.

I live 5 min from work now. 15-20 when I bike it.

At least the public trans is an option. Trying to find my non-driving adult kid a ride, for a 14 mile trip by THE ONLY public transport is 2hr 13 min and he'd have to arrive 2hrs before his shift starts.

So it's all either arrange for the 2 taxis in the area, hope for 1 of 3 Ubers to be available or a private driver.

What kind of transit system goes at 6 mph? Flinstone mobile?

My wife grew up, went to school and worked ~10-15 minutes away from her destination. We moved further away from the city, and now she rages when her work commute is 25-30 minutes.

As to the OP, buses suck, but subways/trains are OK. Honolulu is developing a light rail now, but are hopelessly behind and over budget.

I actually like a short commute. That time to read or listen to music or whatever is good decompression time.

I thought the same thing about subway vs. bus. When I moved to a current city, our apartment was maybe 500 yards from a subway station. The work end was maybe a mile from the station.

But my god, the Chinese subway during rush hour... hell focking no. Those people are focking animals.

After a couple weeks, I figured out that the bus was much more pleasant, and a shorter walk to boot. Yeah, the bus got crowded too, but I was one of the first stops, so I always had a seat.

This year will be great. Wake up 30 mins before class. Go home for the three hour lunch break, instead of hanging around a restaurant like I usually did.

I used to take it to college, then later to internships. It was the absolute suck. Sac town is a car commuter city, so there's a higher ratio of crazies to normal people on its regional transit than in dense vertical cities like NYC and Philly.

Gross setting. Annoying, drawn out means of getting from point A to B. Always hyper aware of surroundings. Made me feel like a female phillybear.

Yep. We have class from 8 to like 11:30. Then break for lunch, come back at like 2:30, have two more hours of class.

Chinese people are basically big children. Lunch time and nap time are sacrosanct. They will not mess with it for any reason. Even the government offices close.

One year, my weekly staff meeting was on Friday. After that, we were done. It usually lasted about two hours. All the foreigners voted unanimously to move the meeting from 2:30 to 12:30. One hour to eat. Do the damn meeting. Go start drinking.

The Chinese staff bitched and whines about their naptime all damn year.

Nope. There are six 40 minute lessons a day. Some study hall kind of bullsh!t as well, but I have nothing to do with that, so I dont know.

Now, most of them also go to school or tutors at nights and on weekends too. But thats up to and funded by their parents.

Taking a light rail/subway/etc to work and back each day sounds pretty cool. Especially now that smart phones exist, you could read books/magazines, listen to audiobooks/podcasts, or ###### post on lightly trafficed message boards to pass time.

Walking or riding a bike to work also sounds awesome. Get some exercise, reduce carbon footprint, whistle while you walk, say hi to the passerby.

Grass is always greener I suppose. The nature of my work has me driving 30k-50k miles a year so I spend more time in my car than anywhere else. I would love to use mass transit/walk and have a tank of gas last me a month.

It's the schedule and the route. It's stupid.

For public transit to really work, it has to be ubiquitous,

Frequent and easy to use. The London systems are great ... you can get almost anywhere by a combo bus/underground/rail route, the pricing by zone makes it frictionless, and having the routes/stops posted on most busses makes it easy to use.

My current commute is 45-50 minutes (13 miles) this is due to construction season in Michigan and the neglect our roads have seen so they are working on pretty much every road. There's no getting around it. Normally it's about 30 minutes and 22 minutes on weekends.

I agree with a poster above it's a good time to decompress as long as you don't have some in traffic.

I usually listen to audible books. Depending on if I pick up a long novel (just read way of Kings) I can plow through a book in a week at 2x speed.

While there probably is stuff lol some smell...hard to compare to Disney given youve got people lathered up in sunscreen to start the day and by the end its a mixture of ass sweat son screen and that bit of turkey leg still stuck in their fat rolls.

That turkey leg is a snack for later
