I love it when these guys say they have a RACE coming up.

Lol. A focking RACE against who? The guy who finishes 87th to your 88th?

This is the correct perspective.

Its great if you run to stay in shape, but please stop acting like this is some sorta competition.

Congrats to anyone who runs as an adult, for any reason. I'm still pissed Amazon contracted with USPS and I need to walk to my mailbox.

Are there medals awarded?

Are there prize monies given out?

Are the events timed and tracked?

Your local 5k Turkey Trot or Color Run are not really competitive but 100m, 100k, 50m, 50k, 30k, 26.2m, 20m, 13.1m, even some 10ks and 5ks can be extremely competitive. They even have Olympic events based on some of these distances.

Go watch a YouTube video on the Hardrock 100 or Western States and tell me those are not competitive.

Sure, your average middle aged 10k or 13.1m runner is not an elite athlete like the runners in the videos above but if they are training for the event and going for a PR then it is a competition, be it with themselves or others in their age group or the entire field.

Youre only in a race if you have a chance of winning.

I don't completely agree with this. I'm not talking about participation trophies, but if you train for an event and set a personal record, that's an accomplishment. For instance, our crossfit gym has occasional fun competitions like how many burpees can you do in an hour? I set a personal record by not dying. :dunno:

Competing against your own personal best is great, especially if it helps you stay fit.

But, shaving :05 off my 5K time while finishing 103rd is roughly the equivalent of me beating my high score in our old mans hoops league.

Good for me, but lets not pretend its more than it is.

Also, no focking way any geek could beat my driveway free throw record.

Also, the Olympics awards medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. If youre not in contention for one of those spots, youre kidding yourself by pretending youre in the race.

Thats a horrible idea if you have chest hair

Gotta shave everything if you want to win the big race anyway.

I get what you’re saying, but I still don’t think it’s too douchey to call it a race - beating your friend or a PR will do, or placing well in your age group, even if you’re nowhere near winning.

I have a bigger problem with people who say they run marathons, when in actuality they walk most of it. A 12 minute mile isn’t running.

Id be impressed with anybody who finishes a marathon. I like running, jogging, walking etc. but that is a serious fock ton of miles.

While I've never participated in any sort of running event, I will defend the idea of it being a race.

Some are racing for the overall win.....But most are racing against themselves. Whether that be a personal best, a time goal they've set based on their training, etc. It's kind of like golf. Even if I'm playing a solo round, I'm still competing.

It isnt that bad if your only goal is to finish, a five hour marathon isnt that awful. I run at least one a year.

Nips are always fine, toenails do tend to be an issue

a competition between runners, horses, vehicles, boats, etc., to see which is the FASTEST in covering a set course.

"I won the first 50-lap race"

synonyms: contest, competition, event, heat, trial(s)

"Sasha won the race"

a series of races for horses or dogs, held at a fixed time on a set course.

plural noun: the races

a situation in which individuals or groups compete to be FIRST to achieve a particular objective.

If you have no chance at first place, youre not really in the race.
