Djgb13 2,338 Posted February 8, 2018 My grandma and grandpa both died from cancer. My dad had prostate cancer but got it cut out. My BIL has colon cancer that almost killed him and has a colostomy bag now. Working on he cancer ward for 2 1/2 years in the AF I saw some of the best and most healthy looking people deteriorate to literally a shell of what they used to be. My BIL was in Texas with his family last weekend for my nephews tournament but started having severe pain so they had to fly back. He got admitted to MUSC that night. Next day he went home. My sister just told us all that his cancer came back and this time theres no cure for it. He has 6 months left to live. Maybe 12. Ive known him since I was really young. Him and my sister were high school sweethearts who got married and had two kids. He came from being poor to being a millionaire. Despite having all that money he is still extremely humble, hardworking, and generous. Helps out his community constantly and his family. Donates to all kinds of charity. Literally the nicest person you will ever meet and would always help you if you asked for it. Now my niece and nephew will have to grow up without a dad who wont get to see them graduate or get married. Both of them love him dearly. He plays golf with my nephew all the time and spoils my niece rotten. My sister is a mess. My parents are a mess. Hell im a mess. The kids dont know and neither does the rest of the family. It seems like the best people in life are always taken away too soon while the worst get to live on and thrive. Sorry for the long post but its very upsetting to learn this. He never had a brother. Only a sister. So he always treated me like I was his real brother. Theres nothing I or anyone else can do anymore for him and its frustrating.

jerryskids 5,172 Posted February 8, 2018 Sorry to hear. Thoughts and prayers to your BIL and his family. My dad died of colon cancer. Similar deal. Had it, they got rid of it, then it came back and was incurable.
Djgb13 2,338 Posted February 8, 2018 Schoolmeester? This is terrible man, really sends a jolt of reality down your spine. No my other BIL the chiropractor. 42 years old. Still pretty young and yet already has to prepare himself to die. Everyone thought he had beat it but the son of a b1tch came back worse and incurable. They said he could try some treatments but it would only prolong it and make his quality of life horrible. So I think hes choosing to just spend what little time he has left with the family

SenatorRock 708 Posted February 8, 2018 If doctors at MUSC gave him 6 months........ tell him to call MD Anderson today. Schedule an appointment. Fly/drive to Houston. Get a second opinion. He can be there in 2 weeks. No offense to MUSC, but if you are talking life or death I would want to have the best oncologists in the world to look at my ###### and determine if there are any options or if it is game over. I can count on more than one hand the people I personally know who were told they would die in 6 months who were able to get to MD Anderson and get what they needed and survived, some of them are at 10+ years cancer free (melanoma, brain, neuroendocrine). Obviously they don't save everyone so there is no guarantee if he goes there they will give him a different prognosis, but there is a chance. Sorry your family is dealing with this right now. He is too young to die. But seriously, tell him to start researching MD Anderson this minute and call them today.

mighty_thor 115 Posted February 8, 2018 My sister was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer a little over 3 years ago. Lungs and Brain mostly. She was told there is nothing they could do but slow the cancer. She would die from it. Her 2 boys were 18 and 21 at the time. She just wanted to prolong her life to be there for them as long as she could. She received some ultra powerful doses of chemo that they only allow the patient to take a max of 5 doses. She could only get through 4 doses then they started with lower doses. Then her doctor wanted to try Immunotherapy. He said it was a hit and miss type of treatment. Some people have had success and she had nothing to lose. After going with the immunotherapy treatment for a while, they did an MRI to see if the cancer was reduced. They could not find it. It was gone. she still receives this immunotherapy and they still test to see if the Cancer is still gone. So far so good. I live in Illinois and my sister lives in South Carolina. We'll call each other every couple of weeks to a month apart. Every time I see her name on teh incoming call, I get nervous that she is going to say its back. Still waiting for that news. The treatments have taken their toll. she wears a hearing aid and she no longer drives but she is surviving. My wife also went through cancer treatments in the same time frame as my sister. She had breast cancer and her survival odds were always fairly high when talking to the doctors but she went through major surgery with chemo after the surgery. She seems to have survived it but it could always come back. She has other issues unrelated to the Cancer though. Those are my cancer stories. A long roundabout of saying: yeah, I agree cancer sux. penultimatestraw 473 Posted February 8, 2018 I hate that doctor's say that you "are cured from cancer"... No you aren't, it is still there... They need to tell the truth...People can be cured (usually surgically), but there is risk of relapse that varies according to the type of tumor. Breast cancer is the worst. Djgb13 2,338 Posted February 9, 2018 My BIL is going to fight it. Hes got a consulting firm coming in this weekend. They are going to take all his info and everything and do research. Finding out what doctors are the best for it and what hospitals. Basically doing all the legwork for him that way he doesnt have to. Plus they are more efficient about it and have more experience. They told my niece and nephew last night and they did NOT take it well. Of course what 9 and 12 year old would take it well? Just hope it works out
Voltaire 4,554 Posted February 10, 2018 Good luck djgb to your BiL. It's a tough time for your family. lt's a pain with the cancer and the hospital visits and spending so much time and upsetting all the familiy's usual routines.

naomi 343 Posted July 21, 2018 Lost an awesome coworker last week to stage 4 colon cancer. 1.5 years after diagnosis. Married mom of two boys. One of those instances where it really, really seems like the "good" die young. Kind, beautiful lady inside and out. It's hard to believe how ravaging it was. But her husband (apparently a recovering alcoholic, which is interesting because she was one of the most even keel, healthy thinking, stable people I've known) was with her 1000% through all the awfulness and loved her intensely, so that is kind of comforting. Bert 1,087 Posted October 10, 2018 T&P's. MD Anderson is pretty damn amazing. I have spent a lot of time there and they can do some remarkable things. Also, if he ends up there make sure to tell all your family that MD stands for Most of the Day when it comes to appointments.

Strike 3,950 Posted October 10, 2018 Sorry man. My mom caught the breast cancer last month. 2 minor surgeries so far and waiting to see if she needs to do radiation. Hang in there. Sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she makes a full recovery. Unfortunately, my mom told my brother that she won't fight this. If she has it, she's just going to let it take it's course. We lost my aunt (her sister) to the same thing about 20 years ago and it was brutal so I understand why she might not want to go through that. Worst thing is living out of state. Gonna talk to my boss about a leave of absence today. Thanks all. Having a thread like this to vent is useful, probably one of the most useful (if not the only useful) thread on the bored.
