How many of you won't have a job in ten years?

Recommended Posts

Once half of the jobs in the world are taken by robots, what will you do? Is that the point where all the "isms" of human civilization will no longer be relevant, and we as a species will have create a new system to accommodate our new technology? If robots get so intelligent, where they can think and feel just as we do, should they have rights?

If you use your brain you are mostly safe.

if you do something a robot can do, well you're screwed.

Not true, they are creating creative robots, that can write articles, music, etc.. and people can't tell the difference. Once you can teach a robot to learn just like a human, all bets are out the window.

Why wouldn't they? If they can have something working around the clock 24/7 that they only have to pay for once, only a dumb business owner wouldn't do this. All the companies that don't get on board are the ones that won't be in business in 20 years.

90% of the work a law firm does is paperwork, why couldn't they?

It's happening. All around us. Those little kiosks at TGI Fridays and similar restaurants, where you can order and pay by credit card, are slowly eliminating waiters/waitresses. Robots will do the same. Slick-looking salesmen will stroll into CEO's offices and show them a slick pie graph showing the savings in payroll. What percentage of them are going to pass on all that extra money in their pockets just because they want to remain loyal to their workers? 10% maybe? These things won't require downtime or overtime pay. The next industrial revolution will be the end of mankind.

Even Hollywood actors are in jeopardy, if I can make something computer animated look just like Leonardo Dicarprio for a fraction of the price, why the fock would any studio pay him?

Is against the law to do so I think... or hollywood law or whatever.

They did it to Christian McFly on Back to the Future II and he sued the sh!t out of them and won. Precedent set...

I remember the Brady Bunch episode where Greg got discovered by music people and made a record. After they mixed it you couldn't even tell it was him. When he asked why they hired him if they were just going to butcher his voice they told him he fit the suit. And that was 40 years ago. I'm not too worried.

On a more serious note, this is why we should be discussing a BIG. If, in fact, robots take over society and there is minimal work left for mankind that could actually be a good thing. Man can focus on more creative endeavors and leave the menial work to the robots, and Women can focus on making sammiches for the men who are focusing on more creative endeavors. And a BIG guarantees everyone has an income to live on.

Leave it to human beings to actually invent a way to make themselves extinct.

I actually deal with Bots to some degree on the trading platforms I use at my job. However, those bots still aren't capable of answering to their boss when a position goes south, or a million other things that I do. But like mmmm.....beer I am outta here before the technology makes me obsolete anyway.

Yeah, the AI currently in use is still pretty rudimentary compared to the human brain. It looks impressive due to how fast computers have become but realistically it still has a long ways to go. Elon Musk just started a new company that will focus on direct connectivity between the human brain and a computer. This will allow us to do computations and other things much quicker but it will be collaborative and not replacement. I don't doubt computers will continue to improve and their thought processes become better and more complex but I don't see them fully replacing people who do jobs that require significant thinking in the next 20 years. I may be making that specific time prediction because I'll be retired within 15 though. :ninja:

The robot scare is way overblown. Sure they'll replace some jobs, but others will also be created.

How many you work in the field of Information Technology?

That industry barely existed in the 80's and now look at it. There's an entire sub industry of IT recruiters out there trying to find people to fill thousands of job openings.

Plus, our economy is circular. A company saving in one area allows them to invest in others, and pay their employees and shareholders more. One guy's investment is another guy' income.

We should be more focused on how we can educate and train workers with the skills they'll need to perform in tomorrow's workplace.

Another real danger is the govt creating policy that kills long term, sustainable economic growth and job creation.

That video confirmed what I'd heard about the transportation industry being the biggest employer in America.

Self-driving cars and trucks will put a lot of people out of work.

Good thing about accounting and auditing and research.

As long as people fock up...auditing will be a profession.

Grandpa and my step dad had the kinds of jobs two that just aren't going away. Funeral director and a barber. Its also why in a small town it was impossible to go out to eat some place where they didn't know most people in the restaurant.
