At least 14 people have been killed in a shooting at a Batman film premiere in the US city of Denver, police say.

About 50 people have been injured in the incident at the cinema complex in the suburb of Aurora.

Witnesses say a gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

Ten people were killed at the cinema and four others died later at hospital of their wounds, the police chief said.

There are reports that the gunman also released a smoke bomb during the incident. Many ambulances are at the scene.

What a price America pays to have liberal gun laws.

 If our guns laws weren't so strict someone in the theater would have been armed and could have taken him out before he did so much damage. :dunno:

How would gun laws have stopped this crime?

They, who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

It's not guns. It's whackos. Are beer and cars running around and causing drunk driving deaths? I ask gun haters this: if your wife or daughter was just ready to be raped...the guy was just getting ready to slide his big back schlong in...would you shoot him? Would you want someone else to? Or would you let him bang away?

I have lots of guns around my house. So does my family, my friends, etc. Pretty much the whole town. Crime rate is near zero here. So are the town shootings, murders, etc. Why isn't everyone around here using their guns to shoot up theaters, schools, each other?)...but in Atlanta, DC, Detroit...it runs rampant? It's the lowlives. Not the guns. Also helps that if someone comes into your house here unwelcomed, you can shoot them without any issues round these parts. Hmm. Doesn't make sense. You're allowed to shoot people if they break in, but there's less people being shot. I guess Atlanta and DC do it the right way, and we do it the wrong way around here.

Possibly. Not my point though. And, I'm not sure....per capita if there are more blacks in prison for rape and violent crimes or not. There's gotta be prison stats somewhere.

If our guns laws weren't so strict...

America has the most liberal gun laws in the world.?. Not enough?

Gun nuts reaction to these stories is always the same - "we need more guns and more people armed." But most Americans will never walk the streets with a gun, no matter what the law allows.

I'm not advocating for or against, but inevitably there will be gun control in America someday. I own a few guns myself, but I'm also wise enough to realize the obvious. Probably another 75 or 100 years so I won't live long enough to get my "told ya so" glory, but it's coming. 40-45% of Americans currently support gun control. After enough of these massacres, that percentage will eventually get to 55-60% and the laws will change. It's just a matter of time. Right or wrong.

I have nothing about gun control to say about this one. I don't think gun laws made this happen or could've prevented it.

First attack comes from the libs -- ABC's Good Morning America falsely ties shooting to Tea Party:

On Good Morning America, ABC News' Brian Ross and George Stephanolpoulos suggested that the Tea Party might be connected to the mass shootings early this morning in an Aurora, CO theater during a screening of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. The mainstream media attempted to blame the Tea Party for the Tuscon shootings in January 2011, shortly after Republicans swept the midterm elections. Now, in the critical 2012 elections, the mainstream media seems poised to do the same--and ABC News has led the way.

Here is the exchange between ABC News chief investigator Brian Ross and host George Stephanopoulos about apparent suspect James Holmes:

Stephanolpoulos: I'm going to go to Brian Ross. You've been investigating the background of Jim Holmes here. You found something that might be significant.

Ross: There's a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year. Now, we don't know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it's Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.

Stephanolpoulos: Okay, we'll keep looking at that. Brian Ross, thanks very much.

How interesting that Ross and ABC News should think to look to the Tea Party website first--and to broadcast politically volatile information without verifying if that "Jim Holmes" is the same as the suspect.

The "Jim Holmes" page on the Colorado Tea Party website is advertising an event with Middle East commentator Brigitte Gabriel next Thursday, July 26--hardly the behavior of a man who expected to be committing a deadly crime on July 20 for which he would certainly be apprehended and might not survive.

Look for more scapegoating from the mainstream media and the Democrats in the hours and days to follow.

UPDATE: The James Holmes arrested at the Aurora theater was 24 years old and seems to be from Denver, CO, according to a Facebook profile (a similar Facebook profile linked by a local news reporter has not been confirmed as the suspect's profile, either). There are many people with the name "James Holmes" in the area, and the James Homes on the Tea Party website could match a James Homes from Aurora, CO who is in his fifties and therefore does not fit the description of the suspect. More evidence that Ross, Stephanolpoulos and ABC rushed to blame the Tea Party without confirmation that the suspect is also the Tea Party member.

How's that gun control stuff working out in chicago ?

How's it working in countries like Japan, UK, and Australia? Pretty well actually.

The guy gassed the theater before opening fire. Police were claiming they couldn't even enter without gas masks.

Point being, if 5 people in the crowd had been armed, the only thing that might change is 10 more people would be dead due to the people in the crowd shooting while choking on gas and being unable to see clearly.

I don't feel strongly about gun control either way, but the person that knows whats about to go down (usually the bad guy), will always have a giant advantage.

Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country and in Phoenix you don't need a permit to own or carry a gun. Check out the number of gun crimes in each city.

The UK??? Are you serious:

Gun crime has INCREASED since they enacted a handgun ban. And now the victims don't have the opportunity to defend themselves.

The part that bothers me is what drives someone to do this? Just senseless killing. No hate, no motive, no target, just massacre.

Makes me wonder what the hell is going on in this dudes mind.

I don't want this to turn into a gun control debate, but I realize it probably will.

Stuff like this is why I try to convince my students to carry all the time. You just never know where you'll be when some whackjob decides to start shooting the place up.

Phoenix has coyotes who are professional human smugglers, and is a major corridor for drugs from Mexico. Our gangs would go Scarface on poosay Chicago gangs. Tucson is even closer, and even though Tucson tends to be/vote democrat, they strongly support gun ownership. Why? It keeps the bad guys fighting the bad guys, and not spilling over to the general populace.
