Musgrave out, Norton stays, Downing promoted to OC

Recommended Posts

A little bit of moving and shaking going on in Oaktown. Glad Ken Norton is staying on (despite rumors to the contrary), never was a fan of Musgrave's and don't know enough about Downing yet - except to note that, as he was formerly the QBs coach, Derek Carr is probably a good advertisement for him.

I wonder if this move was made because the Raiders thought Downing might be taking offers from other teams , do you know?

That's exactly what it sounds like, at least the Raiders were afraid of it anyway.

I'm all for Musgrave getting axed (sad, I know). He has failed essentially everywhere he has been as an OC and, as much as folks love Oakland's offensive ranks this season, it amazes me Amari Cooper hasn't taken over as the clear No. 1. Yes, Crabtree is very good, but Coop's talent is only a step or two behind Julio Jones'. The fact Coop hasn't been consistently dominant reflects poorly on Musgrave, who I also blame for the mind-numbing RB rotation this season.

By all reports, Del Rio shares your (and my) sentiment - particularly regarding the running game (or lack thereof).

What I could never figure out was why the hell he brought Musgrave aboard in the first place, after firing him in Jacksonville. It never made any sense to me.

Is this a Raiders message board in the fantasy offseason?

It's one focking thread dude, Jesus Christ.

They fired the wrong coordinator. During JDRs post game presser from the Houston game he alluded to changes coming. The team had gotten 4-5 inquiries on Brian Downing for OC positions, the Raiders had to promote him or lose him. Downing is close to Carr and has been instrumental in his development. One thing is certain, this move would NOT have been made without Carr's implicit approval. It also shows Carr is ready to step up to the next level and assume a greater role in game planning and play calling. All good for Oakland.

There's been talk the team has contacted Wade Phillips about a role with the defense. Obviously with the news that KNJ will be retained those rumors are false. Raider fans are fed up with the defense's performance, as the team finished in the bottom half again this year in total defense. The issues mainly are schemes, adjustments, lack of QB pressure, big plays surrendered etc. The word is Phillips runs a defense contrary to JDRs philosophy. I can say with assuredness that this move can severely backfire on Del Rio. Oakland MUST improve its defense to be an elite team. The offense covered most of 2016, finishing third in the NFL in TOP. Once Carr went down KNJs defense was exposed greatly. This is a huge gamble, not making the change.

Realize folks hate the silver and black, they're out of contention, irrelevant etc. But if you don't approve the thread, why click on it lol? In other words, if you don't like the smell of the shite, don't lick it mutt face.

Is there a way to ignore you? I do like the fantasy insights of some posters on here but you're one bitter dude. I remember after the Saints-Broncos game you kept on and on and on and misquoting me. Now I see you were just pissed cause you're a Raiders fan. I was somewhat making a joke about the OP message.

Go get laid, I'll chip in a few bucks on it.

Apologies, my team just got kicked in the nuts after going 12-4. Fourteen years is a long time. Yeah, I'm a little edgy. But I don't argue just for arguing sakes. Can't remember the conversation you refer to, but I'm not one to intentionally offend though I'll give it back. Apologies if I did.

I've caught a lot of ridicule over the years here vis a vis my team. Since I respect the scoreboard I've always taken it. Now the Raiders are an up and coming AFC power, so game on.

Sure you can ignore me, I believe there's a function to do so on this bored. Or you can just not click on obvious Raider threads. I've been here probably 7-8 years. Most know if there's a conversation regarding the Raiders I'll be weighing in. I've been wrong on takes before, but I'm pretty dialed in with what Oakland is doing.

All good, I get edgy too. Sorry I got personal. Moving forward as a Broncos fan, it looks like they're waiting on Falcons to lose to hire Shannahan but I could be wrong. If that happens, they may keep Wade at DC.

I agree with that.

For the record, many Raider fans were saying Denver was whipped after KC did you, even to the point they'd roll over in our Week 17 game.

I got a good laugh out of that, knowing you'd battle like mothers. If I'm Elway, I'd talk to Cincy about AJ McCarron. The Talib chain jerk was funny.

Well now this as far as Broncos...

Broncos job offer expected for Vance Joseph; the real question is whether he'll be coy in response to it https://t.co/Yp77zHtBag

If Joseph signs Wade is gone, right? But at 70 how much does he have left in the tank? Thought for sure they'd go with Shanny Jr, he's really done a great job in ATL. Though I credit the fact Matty Ice finally has an offensive line in front of him too.

Yes and word is McCoy would come in as OC if Joseph signs. Who knows what to believe though?
