More global warming scare headlines: CO2 levels at highest point in 800,000 years...

Recommended Posts

Earth's carbon dioxide levels continue to soar, at highest point in 800,000 years

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2018/05/04/global-warming-carbon-dioxide-levels-continue-soar/581270002/

Carbon dioxide the gas scientists say is most responsible for global warming reached its highest level in recorded history last month, at 410 parts per million.

This amount is highest in at least the past 800,000 years, according to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Prior to the onset of the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide levels had fluctuated over the millennia but had never exceeded 300 parts per million.

We keep burning fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide keeps building up in the air, said Scripps scientist Ralph Keeling, who maintains the longest continuous record of atmospheric carbon dioxide on Earth. Its essentially as simple as that.

Ralph Keeling and his late father Charles David Keeling have kept carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii since 1958.

The average concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 410.31 parts per million (ppm) for the month of April, according to the Keeling Curve measurement series.

This marks the first time in the history of the Mauna Loa record that a monthly average has exceeded 410 parts per million. It's also a 30% increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the global atmosphere since the Keeling Curve began in 1958.

As a scientist, what concerns me the most is not that we have passed yet another round-number threshold but what this continued rise actually means: that we are continuing full speed ahead with an unprecedented experiment with our planet, the only home we have, Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University, tweeted Thursday.

Carbon dioxide is called a greenhouse gas for its ability to trap solar radiation and keep it confined to the atmosphere. It is the most prevalent among all greenhouse gases produced by human activities, attributed to the burning of fossil fuels.

The increase in gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide is fueling climate change and making "the planet more dangerous and inhospitable for future generations," the World Meteorological Organization has said.

Increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases are enhancing the planet's natural "greenhouse effect."

CO2 levels were around 280 parts per million prior to the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s, when large amounts of greenhouse gases began to be released by burning fossil fuels.

The burning of the oil, gas and coal for energy releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. These gases have caused the Earth's temperature to rise over the past century to levels that cannot be explained by natural variability.

Carbon dioxide is invisible, odorless and colorless, yet it's responsible for 63% of the warming attributable to all greenhouse gases, according to NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo.

Levels of carbon dioxide go up and down each year, reaching their highest levels in May and then going back down in the fall as plants absorb the gas.

Eight hundred thousand years... Really...

for real they found computers from back then and had logs

I actually have seen conflicting reports that around 12,000 years ago after the last catastrophic event that levels reached 900 in some areas of the world

CO2 is good for plant life and growth. It helps provide the planet with more food

They found writings on cave walls that show cavemen keeping track and listing all of the CO2 levels.

Presumably so future man would know what just the right amount of CO2 levels are supposed to be.

I feel like Joey Tribbiani eating the meat trifle. Meat? Good. Cake? Good.

Carbon? Good. Building block of life.

O2? Good. Needed to live.

Id hardly say its a stretch to say that co2 levels are at record levels.

I mean, record numbers of people breathing it out all day everyday, record numbers of cars and factories and such emitting it, no brainer.

Now if you want to argue that it doesnt matter, you can I suppose.

thats the problem we don't deny that it is rising or that we are contributing, where we disagree is the outcome, and the ability for people to ADAPT

Meh. There are other reasons to reduce fossil fuels and this co2 emissions. Air quality and all the illness as a result. The fact that at some point, probably in the not to distant future, we will run out of such resources. The fact that reliance on such resources causes political problems, given the region that much of that comes from.

Pick your reason. We need to be developing clean renewable energy. As quickly as possible.

Doesn't plant life emit co2?

Im hardly a scientist, but as I recall from school no, plants absorb co2 and emit oxygen.

Yep, that's part of the circle of life. More CO2 = more/healthier vegitation and more oxygen.

I'm all on board with improving our energy with something cleaner and safe. I think that there is ALWAYS room for improvement and we definitely should be making this our goal.

What I'm NOT on board with is taxing everyone into oblivion and hamstringing the US while doing so.

Well, except for the fact that one, one of the reasons there is more co2 is because we are cutting down forest to build more city.

And of course, the pollution creates acid rain which if Im not mistaken, kills plants.

No they aren’t, there are much higher levels of CO2 over the 4.5 billion year life of the planet.

Maybe back in dinosaur extinction time. Not in any time that supported human life.

if its about energy then why are we not continually pushing nuclear, its the safest, cleanest and most efficient.

there are so many types of natural energy, I highly doubt we ever run out

1. I don't think this is true. I believe I've heard that because of rain forest growth + reforestation projects, we have more vegetation than ever. I'm open to being wrong about that though.

2. Acid rain isn't from CO2 I don't think, it is from other pollutants like sulfuric acid. Which is certainly an issue worth limiting. Talk to your Chinese factory owners about it.

Anyway, the yin/yang between animals processing oxygen and expelling CO2, and plants doing the opposite, is one of earth's great feedback systems.

Nuclear would go a very long way to solving the perceived problem. Yet we haven't built a plant in... how many decades? The world is at least two generations in nuclear reactors ahead of us. You'd think the military would fund something just to keep us competitive in nuclear power knowledge.

Anyway, this is one of the reasons I believe that the climate alarmists (in the US anyway) aren't serious about solving CC, and are more concerned about their misanthropic cult.

Nothing to worry about for anyone alive right now. We will all be dead long before this become a major problem. Those born down the road though are totally .

Yeah, you might want to talk to the guys over at Fukisakeyatzee. A trillion dollars later and you know, a good 7 years and they still have no idea how to unfuck themselves.

no they dont

mammals emit co2, plants breath in co2 and emit oxygen

if you are locked in an air tight cave hope to have an evergreen in there with you, and you wont suffocate

although put 2 humans just breathing normally in a 144 sqft room with 48 plants, and the co2 ppm will be about 1100 after an hour in there, plants don't use it nearly as fast as we produce it breathing

Well, I do believe that is during the photosynthesis process. Otherwise they do emit co2.

You appear to be correct.

I freely admit I know d!ck. I slept through freshman bio during summer school between my freshman and sophomore year of college. Thats the extent of my scientific education. Thats why I dont pretend to know about global warming.

Wait.........is this the equivalent of Climatologists shifting their narrative from global warming to climate change to CO2 levels? Lots of shifting narratives going around.

I didn't even attempt biology, so I took earth science instead. Of course I cut as often as possible and took it a second time. I managed to absorb a little bit. Not much, but some.

My university required bio and one other science. I took bio in three week cram summer session. I always took stuff I didnt want to take that way to get it out of the way.

The carbon footprint of a volcano:

1 million tonnes CO2: Mount Etna, Italy, in a quiet year

42 million tonnes CO2: Mount Pinatubo, Philippines, 1991

300 million tonnes CO2: all volcanoes in a typical year

We haven't been hearing much about climate change ever since the democrats and the Koch brothers stumbled into an alliance. Lol.
