What do you play music on?

Recommended Posts

So Ive been thinking that I want to upgrade my music hardware situation.

Back in the states, my dad was a sterophile. I had his old stuff when he upgraded. So I had a killer 80s era rack stereo (amp was new, speakers were old but top quality.)

Sold all that when I moved to china. Ive been using nothing but a small Bluetooth speaker ever since.

Well, it appears I am going to be staying in the same city for a while, so Id like to get something good. Like something that can really shake the house and annoy my d!ckbag Chink neighbors.

Do actual stereos even exist anymore? If I were in America, Id just cruise a few pawn shops near the hood and find a decent amp, some good floor speakers, and be done with it.

Here... all I can find are enormous floor Bluetooth speakers, but they are very focking expensive.

Id be fine with a Bluetooth standalone option. Just dont want to pay a fortune.

Ideas?

Sony receiver and 10 disc CD player with Bose speakers. I've had it for over 20 years.

Now I just ask Alexa to play me a tune.

I too, have an old sony receiver powered by some bose shelf speakers using speaker wire. My siriusXM unit is plugged into it and it rocks. I've tried different bluetooth speakers, beats pills and what not, but nothing compares to that old school set up when it comes to sound. Since you're not in the states anymore, use Ebay. .

eBay wont work. First of all, the shipping cost would be prohibitive. Secondly, the paperwork, annoyance, and expense involved with importing things here is too much of a pita.

Ill have to look at the chinky sites like taobao and see what they have. Might as well wait though, Im moving in a couple of months and then gone all summer. No sense buying now to have to move it and let it sit.

About 3 years ago I decided to look pretty deeply into this. Started scoping out receivers and shelf systems. If I could have found one reasonably priced with a hard drive on it, I was ready to jump. But in the end, I couldn't get past the simplicity, versatility, and convenience of pairing my phone with a nice JBL Bluetoooth speaker.

I went with the Samsung sound bar with the wireless sub-woofer for the surround sound when we bought our new house. I didn't want to get into running wires and whatknot like I have done in the past. The soundbar syncs great with a Samsung TV as well but, what I didn't realize at the time, the thing has been phenomenal for listening to music using Bluetooth. Use it all the time for that now, sounds great without really much hassle at all. (setup or syncing). Just a great feature and powerful sound, would also be great for limited space areas. Looks great, very sleek and minimal, which I am a huge fan of.

Linked here - Mine is about 4 years old and still sounds great for surround or streaming music.

Ran around $700 at the time, I'm sure you could find comparable choices. Not sure what the new model is etc.

Years ago I went a little hog wild on buying this stuff then I got divorced and for the past ten years it's just sat. I recently started using my receiver in the store. It's old but when I bought it it was high tech. Onkyo TX-SR805 and Polk RTi series speakers with center and sub.

Sony, Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon would be good choices for a receiver. For speakers I'm happy with the Polks but I have had nothing else to compare them to.

eta: This is one I looked at before I decided to use my receiver. It's smaller but has Bluetooth and the reviews are good.

i used to have a sony receiver/speakers. very good sound. about a year or two ago i went with a vizio soundbar (with sub and 2 rear speakers). I know there are better sound systems out there, but i have been very happy with the sound from my tv, playstation, and streamed music. you can add additional speaker around the house/outside and decide what you stream where.

ie: wife is upstairs reading...she can stream her music or whatnot, or we can play what i have on downstairs on all speakers.

a few friends have a sonos system. same features with perhaps better functionality (more expensive) but very nice

I have a similar Vizio set up and it sounds pretty decent.

I also have an Amazon echo, a Sony Bluetooth speaker and a small Bose Bluetooth speaker. The Bose is the best sounding, but not super powerful, and now its on the fritz.

I just had a new stereo system installed in my work truck last Saturday too. A Pioneer system with Bluetooth, a USB port and Alpine Speakers

It sounds great. Reminds me of when I was a teenager and having a kick ass car stereo was cool.

Just bought a Sony elite receiver, 5 channel cerwin-vega speakers topped of with two "12 main channel speakers. Also got an audio-technica turntable and have started buying vinyl records. I could also listen to my cds if I wanted on the Blu-ray or Bluetooth through the receiver. It all kicks ass and you should come over and check it out sometime

Yeah, Ill probably end up going that route.

Living in a small Chinese apartment, that would probably be the best option space wise.

I have a UEA Boom Bluetooth speaker. The smaller one. It sounds good. Just not enough.

I wonder if I got two of the bigger ones. They pair together and split the channels.

You way would be good for tv too. Problem is, anything I buy here is going to have buttons and instructions in Chinese and thus be a pain. Will probably buy a tv next year too, so may just go the sound bar route.

JBL Charge 3 ..... $130

I've had the smaller (cheaper) JBL version and it didn't sound that great. The Charge 3 is worth every penny.

amazon?

Ive tried it once before with American amazon. Package got held up in customs and ultimately was lost in delivery.

Could do that with fed ex. But shipping would be a pita.

There is a Chinese version of amazon, but Ive never tried it. I mostly use the local sites. Its just easier.

Sucks. I would like a nice tv, and would drop the coin. But I dont want all the menus in Chinese. I mean, I could figure out what each option means, but its annoying.
