Recommended Posts

Doing 3 corned beefs three different ways.

1st prep, crockpot for 8 hours with fat side up, half a beer and laying on some carrots potatoes and a couple cloves of garlic and a quarted onion. Add cabbage last hour.

2nd prep traditional boil in water with a couple whole peeled onions for 3 and a 1/2 hours. Add potatoes and carrots last hour and cabbage last 30 mins

3rd prep instant pot electric pressure cooker for 90 mins using the rack and 4 cups beef broth. Take out and cook cabbage and carrots in broth after for 7 mins

Also making colcannon, basically mashed potatoes with bacon and grilled cabbage and onion folded in with a 1/2 cup sour cream and butter

Ill report which methood gives the best results.

Can't stand it boiled. I just the the corned beef wrap it in tinfoil bake on a rack 325 for 6 hours. It's saltier but delicious.

Well after much debate, not really, there really wasnt much diiference but the boiled one wasnt as tender to be honest. Flavor profiles were about the same. My guts are stuffed and Ill probably wake up alone in a cloud of my own rectal emanations

I have said it before. Boiled cabbage may be the most disgusting substance on Earth.

When I was in high school, my mom decided to cook corned beef and cabbage in the slow cooker starting early one morning. So both my parents are at work all day, and I come into the house after school. The place smelled like a sh!t house but the horrific part the house had become overrun with house flies. I don't know if they came through the chimney or a slightly opened back door but the flies were as thick as London fog. I mean it is still something that haunts me to this day. Talk about your Amityville horror. I spent the rest of the after noon killing flies. I called my mom 34C at work and she couldn't grasp what I was saying and still denies that this ever happened. Never touched the stuff again.

Not a huge fan of cabbage traditionally served with corned beef around this time of year. Love sour kraut and German or Austrian red cabbage.

I like boiled cabbage. I put mustard on it and mix it up with the spuds. It's good.

Thanks for the thread - interesting stuff.

I boil. Always will.

Does it fall apart in the crock pot?

Flat or point cut? And do you know how to slice it properly? Many corned beefs are rooned when sliced wrong after hours of cooking.

I always go flat. Corned Beef is tender and flavorable enough without all the fat.

Just so I understand, the one time I ate that disgusting, slimy wet concoction, that hunk of beef was boiled in water with the cabbage for hours?

No wonder I almost puked.

Flat cut and cut across grain. The crock pot was 8 hours and was the most tender of the three types, pressure cooker was close second

Slimy?

Wet?

Not my corned beef. I wouldn't like that either.

The fat is slimy. But I get rid if it before serving.

It is boiled, but I after I put it on a board and slice it, there's no water being put on your plate. Just tender meat.

I don't like the cabbage either - never cook it. Just potatoes and carrots.

You need to make sure the knife is sharpened well before cutting and cut across the grain. Crock pot is the way to go imo.

Colcannon is absolutely brill. Mom used to make with chopped green onions.

Don't understand plain mash compared to that.

And instant? I will punch your mother in the diick.

Agree with red cabbage if you go cooked route.

There's a reason why they call brussels sprouts mini Cabbage. You should try cooking cabbage the same way you cook brussels sprouts. And one way you absolutely do not cook brussels sprouts is by boiling them.

Personally, I'm a much bigger fan Raw cabbage. beat the crap out of that iceberg crap everyday but there's all kinds of things you can do it just like brussels sprouts. For one, try to get a nice carmelization in the oven that you'll have to watch it first time you do it.

And, no pickling spice for the corned beef? That's where the whole corned part comes from. It means pickled.

The only way I will eat cabbage is kimchi. (Spicy as Fock Korean cabbage.)

Fock sauerkraut. Cole slaw. All that sh!t. Cabbage is gross.

I love corned beef, but I'm not sure I'd include it in a 3-way.

I find it to be the most sensual of the cured meats
