Retired NFL players boycotting HOF. Decide they want more money and due props.

Recommended Posts

This is just weird.

Like I understand wanting a pension or health benefits for all players that accrue "X" years of service.

But only Hall of famers? Just weird.

I think their point is that the NFL makes money off them in perpetuity and they deserve compensation. Makes sense.

I've always had Kurt Warner in the same "good guy" category (personality/values/etc didn't change with fame and fortune, will never stick foot in mouth). I've always had this little list in my head... included Jason Witten, Troy Aikman, Curt Warner, Steve Young...maybe a few others. Always had complete respect for these guys. There's others of course, but they aren't in the public eye as much for me to make that assessment. Anyway, this tarnishes that a bit with Warner. Ick. Maybe I am off base with my expectations.

I think they should start some social media movement. Demand to get more or else quit. Maybe even sue. Use the words "equality and fairness for mankind" somewhere in their shpiel. Really try to get the public behind them.

They shouldn't have to take this sh1t from the NFL. If what they are doing doesn't work, they should just kneel. Or even retire. Wait. Never mind.

Interesting, in an obvious and predictable sort of way

Pretty sure they got compensated pretty damn well when they were playing. I suspect they still get royalties off their jersey sales, etc.....even now. They knew the deal when they joined the league. They are unionized for focks sake. They negotiated the deal.

Technically the Pro Football HOF is not the property of the NFL.

Good. You're starting to get it. You just did what I do, except you usually cry racism or discrimination when I do it. You can predict future behavior based on past behavior. I'm glad we are now in agreeance.

Yeah...but ya see...what you're talking about is different, cuz, well, that was then, and this is now, ya see, and that changes things. A contract then, well, they don't want that anymore. I mean jeez, can't a guy change his mind?

Then why would they pay the health insurance for hall of famers?

I don't know its property of NFL, but if they are getting insurance, it's not cuz they are hall of famers, its cuz they are former NFLr's (that also happen to be HOFers).

The NFL uses the HOF for PR, trots the players out as HOFers for meet and greets. They are employees to a certain degree. The NFL certainly doesn't trot out just anyone at big events.

First, holy crap MLB, healthcare for life for ONE day in the majors?!

Second, they are not under contract, they have little leverage. The NFL will just stop televising the HOF week stuff. You'll still get the induction at the stadium, but the gold jacket dinner stuff will be pulled. (That is the big one where the HOFers are paraded out) They only started televising that stuff 4-5 years ago...so I don't suspect Goddell will lose any sleep over it.

Warner released a statement:

“It has come to my attention today that a letter was sent out addressing HOFers benefits and profit sharing,” Warner wrote. “While I appreciate the efforts of those spearheading this movement and I fully support the fight to gain better benefits for past, current and future NFL players, I was not made aware of this letter and my name was mistakenly attached to it. I understand what ALL retired NFL players have given to advance our league and I believe it is extremely important to fight for lifetime benefits for each and every one of them. I feel we can make a great case to the NFL for their support of these efforts, however, I do not believe boycotting is the means to the end in this instance. I am hopeful that all sides will come together and have serious conversations about what needs to be accomplished to continue to make our league the greatest in the world, both for those currently involved and for the pioneers on which it was built.”

Yeah...so they are threatening the HOF...and hoping the NFL blinks because of it?

Bad logic on their part there.

I think Carl Ellard is also not agreeing to this since he isnt a HOFer. Maybe Carl Eller, though.

Looks like Eric Dickerson may be speaking for those who dont want him to.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/09/18/eric-dickerson-cites-miscommunication-with-kurt-warner-jerry-rice-over-hof-letter/

Dickerson has posted a statement on Twitter accepting responsibility for a miscommunication with fellow Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Kurt Warner, whose names were added to the letter threatening a boycott of future Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremonies unless the league does more for former players. Both Rice and Warner have said they do not support a boycott.

Dickerson’s acceptance of responsibility was hardly unconditional and unequivocal.

“[T]his is typical NFL pitting players against each other,” Dickerson said, “whether it’s retired players versus Hall of Famers or whether it’s players who are on the Hall of Fame board versus players supporting the cause. At the end of the day, the NFL’s strategy is simply to take attention away from the major issue at hand, which is that the NFL is past due on doing right by the players.”
