When: 08/21/2017 (10:00 am - 3:00 pm)

Where: Columbia, MO

Contact: Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau

Email: info@como.gov

Phone: 573-875-1231

Website: http://www.comoeclipse.com/

On August 21st, 2017, Columbia will be in the direct path of totality for a total solar eclipse! This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental United States since February 26th, 1979.

What is a solar eclipse?

A lineup of the sun, the moon, and Earth. The moon, directly between sun and Earth, will cast a shadow onto our planet. If you’re in the dark part of that shadow (CoMo!) you’ll see a total eclipse. Find out more about solar eclipses here.

Make plans now to visit Columbia for this once-in-a-lifetime event! Since we will be on the center line, we’ll have a whole 2 minutes and 36 seconds of totality here in CoMo, starting at 1:12 PM.

The main viewing event will be at Cosmo Park – there will be food, music, activities, and more! Stay tuned for details on more activities and events being planned around the eclipse.

Timeline for Columbia:

11:45 AM – moon begins crossing the sun

12:45 PM – sun is more than half covered

1:12 PM – totality begins

1:13 PM – maximum

1:15 PM – totality ends

1:40 PM – sun is more than half covered

2:40 PM – moon finishes eclipsing the sun

RSVP to the event here!

I'm seriously considering renting out a few of our acres for campers and the like, apparently every hotel is booked.Hell I could even charge extra for seats on the upper deck of our building.

Eclipse talk always reminds me of the most famous eclipse in the history of mankind - the 1919 Soloar Eclipse.

That eclipse single handedly - vindicated Einstein, substantiated his Theory of Relativity and proved that indeed space-time was a thing and that it does bend.

We're thinking of going up to Casper for it. A buddy up the block has reserved a block of campsites. Thinking the drive up there is going to be terrible though.

we made a list:

https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/best-places-to-view/

thinking about renting out my house that day if anyone is interested.

St. Joseph, Missouri

Duration of totality is 2 minutes, 39 seconds

Totality begins at 1:06 p.m. CDT

St. Joseph is right on the centerline of the eclipse path and enjoys one of the longest durations of any sizable city in the nation. A large eclipse viewing party is being organized at the Rosecrans Memorial Airport with educational speakers, solar telescopes, and more. If you would like to enjoy the eclipse in the company of astronomers, this is an ideal choice

I think they said a few rooms are left, but they are going for like $400 per night and you have to reserve three nights :bench:

When do the wackos come out and say that this is happening because of "global warming" or "climate change"?

It looks from this like the entire country will experience a partial eclipse:

http://www.weather.gov/chs/eclipse

From what I learned this year is that it's a different experience with totality. We will experience a total eclipse, basically nighttime for three minutes during the day, and leading up to that will be a 1.5 hrs of sunset and then the experience of a sunrise following. In addition, there are tons of other phenomena they are saying occurs during a total eclipse :dunno:

this will be my first, and could very well be my last since they say it isn't coming to our area again for another 184 years :bench:

Holy synchronicity. I was racking my brain to remember the name of that device that can be used to safely view an eclipse. I was going to say I always carry one around with me because you never know when an eclipse will strike.

Just now Pandora was playing a song that I didn't recognize, and I don't always do this, but I clicked over to that window to see what it was, and it was by the band Camera Obscura. :shocking:

Nope. It's "we're living in a powder keg giving off sparks".

I miss the days when you could fool the natives by 'taking away the sun' and then achieving Godhood status. :(

I ordered some glasses last night for this event. I am in southern Indiana, it is suppose to be a pretty decent look from our area, not perfect, but good. I am sure it will be too cloudy.

Yeah, the space guys kind of lost me when they blew us all up over how rare and amazing the super moon was going to be.

And then there was one like every two weeks after that for a while. Turns out, it was the same f****** moon.
