What mocks better prepare for drafts

Recommended Posts

Like certain sites have players ranked differently but I'm wondering if I should try a different mock than NFL.com?

I do not care for espn, nfl or yahoo, but I mock there occasionally just to keep up on where they're ADP is versus the others since I have leagues in all. FFC is the best imo, though there's plenty of room for improvement there. If you mock at all, you should mock from several sources to make sure you're aware of all trends. There is wide ranging valuation of players between sites.

fantasy calculator is by far the worst. They offer 2 types of mocks, and it defaults to the standard non PPR. You have to click at the top " FLEX " to go to a FLEX mock which is PPR. Some people don't know that, and they go on the defaulted mock and draft like its a FLEX when its a standard. So you have half drafting like its a flex and half drafting standard. I am in a 12 team standard ppr. So I use the standard when I am on there. Although its not PPR I know at least the format is starting 2 RB's instead of being able to start 3. In result you get guys drafting 3 or 4RB's to start the draft before they even get a WR or QB.... screws it up for the rest. I get in arguments with idiots on there saying its good to get a back up RB in the 3rd and pass on the last of true # 1 WR's. Then some go as far as saying it doesn't matter if its standard or FLEX just mock and have fun ??? You could get past all the retards on there, if at least offered maybe standard ppr.

Pen to paper thats the best way to rank them forget them mocks it will just confuse you . Long long ago i did mocks made me change my rankings and i would have done much better staying with my own rankings.

Why would a mock change your player ranking?

Its nice to do a few mocks to have an idea of which player will go where. I did just do one though and the first 20 picks were the first 20 players listed, so people do get influenced by the order on ffc. A few mocks and then understanding the current adp is your best bet for determining the likelihood of a player you want making it back the next round.

Mocks do NOTHING but screw up your draft. They are horribly inaccurate and will lead you to believe specific players will be taken in slots where they WILL NOT go in a live draft. Instead of using a mock draft, why not try one of the MFL10's? Go to myfantasyleague.com and sign up for one of their cheap leagues. You will get to see where players are actually being taken and be in a cheap league with a $100 payout. I see some crazy stuff posted on this site in regards to a players ADP and it is positively nowhere near where the players are really being drafted. I can't say it enough.... Mocking is the worst possible way to prepare for a draft.

I have watched people in mocks purposely draft players in various spots to screw with ADP. It's not a bad idea really. If you aren't ranking your own players, or using a reputable site's rankings, you are screwed anyway. I make my own rankings and I stick to them.

You don't mock to gauge ADP... You mock to see what your team will look like while trying different strategies.

If you are in an old league with people you know well, then do this.

Go to mock early and get 5 of the draft slots, including your own. Then make that mock mirror your real draft.

For example, QBs always go way faster in my main league then they would in a mock. So, I make sure at least 3 QBs are drafted in the 1st 15 picks. If you know your league, you know how people tend to draft and can shape a mock to better fit your real world example.

I don't "mock" per se, I actually join a bunch of leagues before my big money league drafts. I go with the standard leagues the first couple times, then I look for leagues with deep rosters because it forces me to think about back ups, and that helps me decide on sleepers I'm gonna target with the last couple reserve picks. So, I end up in a bunch of no money leagues for for the fun of it, and I get some good preparation for the money league.

I tried doing this and it always ends up with me letting all the players i want fall to one team. Youre going to draft based off of your own rankings while during the real draft other owners will use different rankings.

i love MFL10s. the only problem with using them as a gauge for ADP is that the strategy is different: no trades, waivers, or lineup decisions means different players and positions have much more or less value than they do in a normal redraft league. still it's lots of fun and a valuable exercise.

several sites have tools that help you gauge adp. i think fantasy pros has one for example, not sure of others.

unless you can adjust the scoring/lineup settings to match your league, the value of mock drafts is questionable.

i love mock drafts. it gives you an opportunity to see what type of team you can field if you go rb/rb/ or wr/wr/ or any other combo. then i plug my team into the "rate my team" app at FBGs.

on the downside, todays mock wont be the same as a mock in 10 days, but its a useful tool

Mocking without real people makes no sense to me.

A real mock would be to have a list of names alphebetically where the mocker would type a players name in a search. They wouldnt be influenced by a pre ranked list.

Yeah, a computer generated mock would draft players based on the computer's assigned value. It doesn't let you see the players that consistently fall in drafts. That's why I do so many real drafts before my money draft. This year, I got to see that NOBODY trusted Stacy, people were letting Fitz slide beyond what his value was, and that was helpful because I let him slide a round beyond where I would've taken him, and still got him. That I could take a couple of the reserve receivers I thought were breakout candidates, a solid backup RB, and that Moreno would still be there for me to grab with one of my last picks (Bash him all you want, but he's still the presumptive starter on a team whose offense isn't gonna be too terrible, and that has value) You don't get any of that drafting against the computer.

Try to use the same site you use for your league(s) as it will depend on where those sites rank their playets what you can expect (most likely) during your real draft.

Sometimes owners are caught between 2 or more players & just select the guy that's highest on the rankings as the deciding factor. The problem is every site is different....sometimes waaaaaaaay different. This can skew the draft results because of the rankings (differences) amongst multiple sites.

Just my $.02

have any of you guys tried this one?

I love this one cuz its all automated and there is no waiting more than 10 sec between picks

http://thefakefootball.com/mock-draft-simulator/

this is the best mock site

http://draftwizard.fantasypros.com/simulator/start.jsp?sport=nfl

thread over

Those are basically the same tool, right? And I agree. I like that one the best. And if you upgrade, it gives you a lot more options to customize (inputting your scoring, removing picks and repicking, etc.) the mock.

I'm on NFL.com and well its not comparable to the real draft in terms of QB and RB

This is how the first round is ranked

1.AP

2.McCoy

3.JC

4.Forte

5.Lynch

6.Lacy

7.Foster

8.Murray

9.Bell

10.Graham

11.Calvin

12.Ball

Obviously there are a few variables to consider:

1. Scoring

2. Lineup requirements

3. Tenure of drafting partners/sharks vs guppies

4. Time of year

5. Random unexplained picks by league-mates

Etc....

I've actually been trying mocking in a larger league size than I'm in. For 12 team leagues I mock in a 16 size league. Gives a closer, but still useless, gauge on the actual players that might be there and has assisted with defining the ends of certain tiers for me.

The other aspect of mocks is to familiarize yourself with the sites rankings if you're drafting online. I call it the autodraft effect. Mike Wallace might be ranked the 26th receiver on one site and 19 on another. If you draft with people that don't have their own ranking tiers, that can affect your chance at getting certain players. A lot of players just look at the site rankings and loosely go off that.
