J-Money 4 Posted July 26, 2014 So for years I've mostly played in leagues that are separated into 2 divisions and the winner of each division gets a bye in the playoffs. I'm now considering lumping everyone together and letting the top overall teams compete in the playoffs. A team that won their division and secured a 1st round bye last year was statistically the worst team in the playoffs and the true 2nd best team got bumped in the first round surprisingly. I don't know if I just never noticed it happen before (no I wasn't the bumped team lol) or what but it was pretty crappy and I don't want to see that happen again if there is a horrible division one year for whatever reason. Anyone else have issues like this or should I not worry about it?

AnaheimRams 28 Posted July 27, 2014 Have been on both sides of a crappy division winner slipping into the playoffs. Hey... Life isn't fair. I prefer having divisions w/ multiple wildcards. 1) it more closely mimics the NFL 2) It breeds fun rivalries when teams are playing each other multiple times a season. Frozenbeernuts 1,652 Posted July 27, 2014 2 divisions is fine. More times than not a division winner is at least a playoff worthy team. One year we did division winners get a bye, the 2nd and third in each div were wild cards. I had a 5-8 team and was 3rd in my div making the playoffs. That was the last time we went strictly by divisional rank. I did almost win the league which made everyone even more pissed off.
J-Money 4 Posted July 27, 2014 Currently we do a combination of what you guys are mentioning. The winner of each division is automatically in and receives a bye, the rest of the spots are generated based on record. Of the 6 playoff spots last year, 5 teams came from 1 division. Beer22 2 Posted July 28, 2014 We dumped divisions a few years back. It was the best decision we ever made. Now the best 6 teams get in.

Upper Class Trash 67 Posted July 28, 2014 The dynasty leagues I am in still have divisions, but the redraft leagues are all done as above; The top 6 get in and there are no divisions. I think the setup works great for both leagues. In dynasty, I've found the divisions keep the owners happy as they can build a rivalry. In redraft, nobody cares about a rivalry, so let the best teams in and move on with life.
Herbivore 904 Posted July 28, 2014 For 12 or 10 team leagues every method is slightly flawed. When you have no divisions, some teams play the better teams twice while others play the worst twice. 12 Geeks has 6 teams make the playoffs. Not what I would choose, but does keep more teams in the hunt right to the end of regular season. I prefer 3 divisions 1 wild card. At worst you have the 3rd best team missing the playoffs, and more likely the 4th best.

Play each div opponent twice, everyone else once. Three div winners, two wildcards and top remaining overall points teams make playoffs. Top 2 div winners get the first round bye.
