Did you notice they stopped selling cars?

Recommended Posts

I'm serious. They used to talk about the engine, the handling, the suspension, Etc.

Now, it's about wireless technology and the multiple lighting color schemes and the size of the data screen and, really anything that has nothing to do with the car.

Every single freaking day, I feel more and more like Denis Leary in demolition Man.

I have said this for a long time on this board. You veterans know this. We are becoming San Angeles. I said that 10 years ago and God damn if it wasn't prophetic. Pretty soon they're going to start fining us for our foul language. And it's just a matter of time before those three seashells show up in the bathroom.

Lordstown...a big GM plant about 90 mins away is going idle...they make the chevy cruze.

Half the counties are flipping out. Had all kinds of fund raisers for employees over the holidays and food drives.

They havent closed yet.

People arent buying cars anymore...its all suvs and crossovers.

A company might create a market with a good product and a hardcore customer base that is very knowledgeable. But then growth stagnates and the only way to grow is to attract novices to your market. Eventually the need for growth causes ALL the marketing to be aimed at everyone BUT the hardcore base. Idea guys in the company that are passionate about the product get driven out and replaced by sales and marketing people. Eventually this catches up with the company and product begins to suffer. Idea guys might run off and found their own small company to get back to basics. That company then attracts a hardcore customer base and starts rivaling the big company.

And this is a reason we should never bailout these failing companies, I don’t care how big they are.

It's sad that they get so many people with this tactic.

I wanted a new Jeep Wrangler a few years back. Thought I could pick out the car, sit down and write a check for it. Man, that was a struggle. The salesman was all about payment plans. I told him I was just going to give them a check for the car. He didn't understand. Kept talking monthly payments. I said I was going to pay balance in full. He looked at me like I was crazy and asked my why, when they could give me a low interest rate? They had the car I wanted on the lot and that was the only reason I didn't walk out.

And just who do we have to blame for that? :dunno: Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder.

Very true.

The sad part is, the more "safety features" they make in modern vehicles, the dumber the driver becomes. Look for more accidents coming your way due to this.

I remember back in the day rags like motor trend, car and driver and a few others were judging vehicles on which had more cupholders.

Just wait. The thinking is that right now we're a lot like we were in 2007. Except instead of retail mortgages, the next big trash is going to be car loans. I was with a buddy of mine who bought a new truck. And there is this kid that clearly should not have had any financing. And these guys chest did everything possible to put him in on loan but he'll never be able to service. They even rolled up an old loan. Poor bastard probably had $55,000 on a $35,000 car.

there's a shitload of people driving around 50 and $60,000 SUVs and pickup trucks. just like with mortgages when 60% of household income went to just paying the mortgage? Now it's all about the car loan and associated insurance. That is not sustainable.

I really think that's going to be the first real harbinger of things to come. And I think it's coming sooner rather than later.

Just like housing, they just need warm bodies signing on the dotted line. And they bundle all these bad loans up and sell them at a discount to the equivalent of Fannie Mae. These brokerage houses who buy loans for pennies on the dollar. Starting to sound familiar?

one of the ancillary promise to that is that when people realize that they can't afford a 60 and $70,000 SUVs, there's not going to be an inventory of $30,000 vehicles waiting for them.

Many high schools and colleges don't teach common sense for everyday life. They push social and political ideologies and think that will equip the student for life.

Ok question....serious one. The housing market failure was partly due to defaulting borrowers, but that was just the spark that ignited the gas can of CDO's---which multiplied the impact by thousands. That really doesnt happen much with car loans does it? After all the belief was if someone defaulted on a mortgage, you still had the house as collateral and housing prices never went down sooooooo...

When you buy a car it loses value immediately. I dont see these being something people can bundle into a larger thing.

But maybe they do?

I know more and more people financing SUVs and trucks for only 84 months. When I ask if they know that's 7 years some seem really surprised. Others give me the I'm gonna pay it off early.

I financed my boat for 6 years but paid it off in less than a year.

I may do the same if I end up ever buying a truck.

...Along with the people who are not interested in owning a car/suv/crossover at all. Move close enough to work, so you can walk, use Uber, rent a pickup from Home Depot once a year, and get your food delivered. With the money you don't spend on a car, gas, insurance, and repairs, you can party in Singapore like a rock star. Extra pints if you remembered to move within walking distance of a bar.
