Earlier today Change.org made an announcement that Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T and an executive board member of the Boy Scouts of America would be joining fellow Board member James Turley, CEO of Ernst & Young to help change the current Boy Scouts of America policy that bans gay scouts and leaders.

 

According to reporter David Taffet of the Dallas Voice, “Stephenson’s spokesman, Marty Richter told Dallas Voice he’s committed to changing the policy... Richter said he believes Turley will lead the effort to make the Boy Scouts inclusive with Stephenson’s full support.”

 

Stephenson’s spokesperson went on record with this commitment after Jennifer Tyrrell, a gay mom from Bridgeport, Ohio who was ousted as her son’s den leader in April of this year, started a petition on Change.org calling for an end to the Boy Scouts’ ban on gay troops and leaders, which has attracted more than 300,000 signatures. In June 2012, Tyrrell began a second petition on Change.org calling on Stephenson to work to end it. More than 75,000 people have signed it to date.

 

According to Tyrrell, “All I’m asking for is the opportunity to meet with a Boy Scouts official and resume my post as den leader of my son’s Cub Scout Pack -- a post that was taken from me as a result of a discriminatory policy that’s unpopular with Boy Scouts and leaders across the country,” said Tyrrell. “I hope they’ll listen to my story and the stories of hundreds of thousands who have signed my Change.org petitions.”

 

Now it looks as though that meeting will not take place and that Stephenson and Turley will have their work cut out for them. The Boy Scouts of America has released a statement today affirming their policy on banning gay scouts and leaders.

 

Said Chad Griffin of the Human Rights Campaign, “This is a missed opportunity of colossal proportions. With the country moving toward inclusion, the leaders of the Boy Scouts of America have instead sent a message to young people that only some of them are valued. These adults could have taught the next generation of leaders the value of respect, yet they’ve chosen to teach division and intolerance.”

I really love scouting and would like to get my kids involved in it. At some point since I was a kid, the Mormons and fundumentalists hijacked the Boy Scouts and purged all the disenters. Non-Chirstians/mormons are made unwelcome which is really sad if you're not into fictional fairy tales.

 

Dads wanting their sons to join now have to realize that it's not necessarily the same fun group they were in as kids. It's become more of a religious organization and they have to keep their mouths shut up and keep their head down or risk getting expelled.

I seem to remember hearing this somewhere when I was a kid...

 

Scouting is supposed to teach you to be a man. I'm not talking about the outdoor skils, fire building and whatnot. I'm talking about being a stand up guy. My brother and I did it for years. He took my nephew once, and reported that, much as others here have said, it is not what it used to be.

 

That is very sad. So many boys today need something like what scouting used to be. Positive male role models, a place to channel energy, values and discipline.

True. However, not all scouts are 10 yrs old -- the traditional program goes until 18. Although in the article I posted, at issue was a lesbian leader, which means she likes... women vs. men, which should make the boys safer, no? Also, when I was in Scouts there was a certain Christian component -- all of our troops were affiliated with churches where I grew up, and we attended an annual service to "show off" to the congregation.

 

Also, the policy extends to children, and a 14 yr old ghey boy is likely to be attracted to other 14 yr old boys. Perhaps that is a separate question though -- should the Scouts let in openly ghey boys?

The Boy Scouts have this program called Girl Scouts... maybe you've heard of it? Boys go into one, girls into the other. Not black boys in one, white boys in one, hispanic boys in one, oriental boys in one, and gay boys in one... boys, period. The Girl Scouts work the same way.

- if you don't believe that homosexuality is 100% physiological, you might be concerned about gay boys convincing other boys to experiment with things that you find morally wrong.

I was married to a mormon for 11 years and can say Scouts is almost mandatory for all kids of age. They do seem to have a monopoly on Scouts right now
