It is obviously a hot topic out here in California, so I wanted to get your thoughts. I really can't think of any valid reasons for keeping it illegal, other than just the normal fear-mongoring that the opposition puts out. My reasons to vote yes are the following, feel free to rip them apart if you have a valid argument...

-Help keep it away from our kids. Better to be controlled and sold in a reputable business than by drug dealers that don't ask for ID. Ask any school child, and they will tell you it is easier to get pot than alcohol

-Allows reputable business to make money on it instead of criminals. Create lots and lots of jobs, and keep the money in our economy instead of drug cartels and gangs.

-Creates money for the government through taxing it. It is already our state's biggest cash crop, might as well make revenue off of it.

-Helps unclog our courts and jails...another money saver for the government and allows the police to concentrate on violent criminals that actually cause harm to persons or property.

-It is a safer choice than alcohol. No one has ever died of an overdose, where thousands die each year from alcohol poisoning. When you get stoned you very rarely want to beat your wife or cause trouble.

-It will still be against the law to drive under the influence

-People wouldn't show up work stoned any more than they do drunk now, most take personal responsibility

-People are already smoking it, so by making it legal I think it would create greater respect for law enforcement.

-The drug war is obviously not working, time to try something different.

Any thoughts??

Did ya know eesa civil rights issue?

Legalizing marijuana is a civil rights issue, according to one of California's most prominent African-American advocacy groups.

The California State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, led by President Alice Huffman, recently announced its "unconditional endorsement" for Proposition 19, a legislative initiative on the November ballot that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in California.

Huffman said African-Americans are disproportionately affected by the criminalization of marijuana which makes passing the law a civil rights issue.

I vote YES. I don't smoke pot anymore, but it's a lot safer than alcohol and if people want to get high I don't see why there is anything wrong with it. Legalizing it may also help eliminate some drug/gang related crimes.

Irony.

Legislators all over the state have accomplished or are in the process of getting all smoking banned in public places, your car, your residence. NOW, you try to legalize pot. Brilliant on so many levels. So, I guess you better invest in brownie mix, because you sure as hell aren't going to be allowed to smoke it.

I favor it. If this measure passes in cali it will be the death knoll for marijuana laws everywhere. Once states see how much money they can make off of it being legal it will a domino effect.

Im not sure how much its going to prevent high schoolers from getting it. People will still grow it. I don't think it'll have any impact whatsoever on grade school kids ability to get it.

I'm all for it. I only toke up once every 2 months or so. But i agree, its safer than alcohol. Nobody gets high and wants to start bar fights. It'll stimulate the economy with new revenue. Taco bell stock, i'm on it! It'll clear courtrooms that have to deal with this stupid sh1t. Last time i read, 3 out 10 prisoners were in prison for marijuana related offenses. If it gets down to 1 out of 10, it'll be a huge success.

The only thing thats bad is you can't test for dwi's. I know a lot of people say they're good drivers when they're high. I agree to a certain point. I don't drive high anymore, but when i did, driving above 45mph is scary sh1t. I obeyed all traffic laws and drove extra careful. But, when it comes to reaction time, we have none. If something happens in front of you, you wont be able to react in time. I don't think people should drive high.

You like to drink, so I think your vote makes you a hypocrite. Why should your drug of choice be legal, when another, less harmful, naturally growing substance is not? It makes no sense.

Sux is under the impression that all smokers are lazy, jobless, dumb, and a drain on society. He obviously doesn't know enough stoners. If he knew how many doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc., smoked, i'm sure he would change his mind. Its not like highly successful people like aaron sorkin, richard branson, obama, bloomberg, ted williams, etc., have smoked or continue to smoke.

I voted "no."

Since I never tried marijuana, I feel like I have an obligation to tell stoners to go fock themselves.

There may be a compelling reason why it was made illegal in the first place but I don't care to spend any time looking into it.

I don't know about straight legalizing it. I voted yes in the poll but I am not sure I would actually vote yes in an election. Full legalization might be going too far. But I am DEFINITELY in favor of decriminalizing. People spending time in jail for pot is just plain stupid. There are much bigger problems out there, and the state shouldn't be using my tax dollars to house some stoner in the clink.

I think decriminalization is a terrible way to go...makes it OK to smoke it, but with no legal means to get it the gangs and the cartels still make a bucketful of money and push it on our young. I am for legalization, but if not that it should stay completely illegal.

Honestly, it was made illegal because the lumber companies lobbied to make it illegal, to make hemp paper illegal. Hemp was cutting into their profits in that area, and they managed to put a stop to it.

Been illegal ever since.

what does it matter, if the people say no, some judge will throw it out anyway.

This time it might work the other way around, voters say yes and Holder will have the DEA and DOJ step in.

It's the only viable way to cut into the U.S of A's attrocious national debt.

Legalize, tax and start cutting the deficit.

Decriminalze and free all small time/petty stoners from our over-crowded prisons...make more room for the hardened criminals :bandana:

None of the ones I mentioned are addictive to the point you commit crimes to use/get them.

Heroin, Crack, Meth can never be legal or supported by the gubment

I'm not really a stoner but I get high maybe once a year? Mainly at a party when someone offers it and I'm just drunk enough. I haven't bought marijuana in a decade or longer.

I'm pretty disappointed to see someone who I'd always respected as a principled libertarian type take your stance on pot out of ignorance.
