The king of crash

check out this story about my friends draft

Recommended Posts

So my friend called me and said he had a draft today at 1 and he had 8th pick in a 12 man league (regular). After he drafted Steven Jackson 8th overall he called me to tell me the good news. I asked him who do you plan on takeing in the 2nd round, he said well Clinton Portis hasnt been drafted yet. WHAT?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?

I said if Clinton is on the board for your second round pick you better take him!!! he said yeah i will, then he read to me the info on Portis. and his injury, it said he might be out for week 1 of the regular season. my friend got cold feet about Portis and said No way! am i taking him hes injured! i'm taking Kevin Jones!

I tried to change his mind about it by saying that he will only be out for 1 week maybe and that you will have him healthy in later weeks around playoff time! But my info didnt change his mind and when it was his turn to take his 2nd round pick and Clinton Portis was still on the board he took Kevin Jones............. ;)

Stupid eh?

I don't know. I wouldn't hate on the guy too hard until the season plays out. Looks like a stupid pick now but a healthy Kevin Jones might end up way more valuable than a Portis on the sidelines late in the season. Not that I would have gone that route myself because I would think I could trade Portis right now for more than KJs value to the right owner and the reward is huge but ... I'm just saying I wouldn't hate too hard on him now because if things turn out the wrong way he'll never let you live it down. And there are some real concerns with the shoulder.

If Portis was still around 16 picks into the draft you might wonder what the other teams actually thought of his trade value. If you were going with the pick just to trade him I'm not sure he would have gotten as much as you think. That being said I really doubt kevin jones will have 2nd round value, the lions are still a pretty weak team and he has never been a very good RB.

 I would have taken Portis over Jones mostly because Portis will be back in time to produce big in that offense. Look what Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson did in KC and I think that offense fits Portis since Al Saunders is their offense corridenator now in Washington. :dunno:

Bump

Now this is what I am talking about when jumping the gun on dumping too hard on most trades or draft decisions. Sure passing up LJ to draft Mike Bell might fall into that category or say trading LT2 for Wali Lundy. But this owner already knew that Portis was injured and he took that information into consideration - risk/reward comes into play. I'm not high on Kevin Jones but I'm also not as down as most fantasy owners either and I was way more down on Portis than most owners after the injury. Now with the Duckett deal even more so.

1. Either the injury is more serious than earlier thought.

2. Gibbs and company plan on spreading the wealth more with carries to limit the abuse Portis takes.

3. They don't plan on limiting Poris at all. They are going to throw the dice that he can hold up but want to cover their bets in case he goes down at some point.

In any of those scenarios Portis takes a big hit on my draft board. He started out lock for 4th pre-injury, went to 6-8 range post injury and following this trade :ninja: I have to really look hard before making that pick with any early selection.

well, I really cant say I blame the guy.

I'm not big on acquiring injured players with one of my top 3 picks unless it's a keeper draft and you can keep the guy for years to come.

and the fact that they traded for another RB means that his injury may be more serious than we know.

I would hold off on judgement here until the extent of the injury is fully known.
