Josh Allen: another young & dumb Millenial ..

If I was a GM, I'd be more concerned with the context and if this was a pattern that continued. Did he say these things as a Freshman? Senior? Did it continue in college? Was it part of some flame war, or did he just randomly open and up tweet racist things. Did he get smarter and realize this was a stupid viewpoint? Or did he get smarter and realize he couldn't share this viewpoint with the world at large .. At least there wasn't twitter when I was in high school. Otherwise there would probably tweets like PecosRattlers1337 "Commodore 64's are the best. I'll never give up that pure hacking tool!" out there and I'd never live that down.

Grade Your Teams Draft - 2015

1.27 (DB) Byron Jones - B-. He's been a decent starter, but they might have hoped for more from a first rounder. 2.28 (DL) Randy Gregory - D. Can't give them an F, because it was gambling with first round talent, so it was a decent attempt to get value .. but they lost that gamble so far. Maybe he can be reinstated this year, but I wouldn't hold my breath. 3.27 (OL) Chaz Green - B-. He hasn't really delivered so far IMO, but he hasn't bombed out either & he's a mid round pick. *shrugs* 4.28 (LB) Damien Wilson - B-. Backup LB. That's not so bad for a late 4rth pick 5.27 (DL) Ryan Russell - C-. No longer on the team, which is a minor disappointment for a 5th rounder, but not unexpected. 7.19 (LB) Mark Nzeocha - C. No longer on the team, but that's expected of most late rounders 7.26 (OL) Laurence Gibson - C. No longer on the team, but that's expected of most late rounders 7.29 (TE) Geoff Swaim - B. Defying odds to stay on the team as a 7th rounder. If he can help out in practice, that's upside

There are many ways to get rich & of course many levels of rich. You don't have to be the most assertive type A personality to be a billionaire, but the CEO path to riches definitely often caters to this personality. There are plenty of tech startup founders who are not this type of personality ( and definitely some who are, I've worked for both ). There are plenty of passive or passive aggressive people who just plan to get what they want, instead of forcing it down other people's throats directly. They are more likely to be the guy behind the scenes & they might not make as much as the CEO in salary or new stock grants, but if you have a ton of founder stock at the original pennies on the $ price and your company IPOs well, you can still end up pretty rich! There are definitely a ton of professional types who just do what they are told & are very competent who end up moderately rich as well, but they are unlikely to become billionaires.

Fournette & McCaffrey 2.0/The Pacific Pro League

Evil is definitely a stretch, but also a strawman. There are a number of reasons that having NCAA football (or other sports) be huge money isn't necessarily a good thing: Are the athletes actually getting a good education? Or are they getting a second tier set of classes designed to just let them play football? Is the focus of college being diluted by having sports be big money and a big deal? I am not saying I don't like sports ( I do ) but college should be about academics, experimentation & self development. Not entertainment. Being on the team is definitely more than entertainment, but most college students are not on the team. Is the cost of college going up because colleges feel the need to compete over stadiums and gyms and all that to attract students? If so, this doesn't sound like a great return on investment for most college students. Are the college athletes actually well served by their experience? How many graduate and then use that degree to earn their living? By getting a free ride rather than getting $ and having to manage their own money are getting well prepared for managing their finances post college sports? Maybe making $50k in a league like this would actually serve them better?

Where will the Free Agents land?

Williams has been completely unreliable for years, so this is the only decision that makes sense. We will surely draft some late round WRs as well to compete with the Holmes/Butlers of the world. Someone will emerge from that costing far less and with very similar production.

    Auction Results and Strategies

Sounds like a great draft - hope my auction goes as well Tuesday! Mine is a 2 QB league, so I'm never sure what the auction values will turn out to be. Usually I try to get 1 top RB, WR and QB, whoever falls in value the most at the top tier .. but the top tiers are so small this year that I might have to try the pre-emptive bid this time.
  7. I do regret the team passing on Jalen Ramsey .. but it will be fun to watch Zeke play anyway. Jaylon Smith doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but hopefully some of his upside will solidify .. eventually.

Instant Fantasy Analysis - RB Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys

That's true & I do loving watching top offenses play .. so I'm excited to see what Zeke can do for us. Hopefully between him and Dez it will take pressure off 2nd and 3rd receiving options that haven't been working out for us the last few years.

Instant Fantasy Analysis - RB Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys

I agree that a S at 4 isn't great value, but I believe Jalen can play both S and CB at an extremely high level. I'm sure some teams think he is better at one slot or the other, but the Jags are going to use him at CB according to jacksonville.com Supposedly Jalen and Zeke were the two players at the top of our draftboard, so it stands to reason that we considered him a CB as well. Jalen Ramsey definitely wouldn't be enough to put the Dallas D over the top, but I am not advocating that the Cowboys draft with a "1 more player mentality". I think they should take the best value available as long they have a reasonable need at that position and incrementally improve over time. We also did take LB, DE and DL players in later rounds, so it's not like we got better at just 1 defensive spot. We also have two young DEs who could improve this year, though they each have their red flags & will be sitting out the first four games. That being said, it's not like I think Zeke will be a bust. Gonna be fun to watch him run behind our line, even if I disagree with the draft strategy.

Instant Fantasy Analysis - RB Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys

I don't think the #34 pick is necessarily bad (hey I want more defenders!) - it's the combination that strikes me as odd. I also really don't think the Cowboys are good enough that a single player is gonna get them back to the superbowl .. so they should just take the maximum value they can get, instead of zeroing in on first year impact. To me, that means take a top tier player at a position that is historically hard to obtain (DE, CB, OT, QB) and lock them into a long rookie contract so we can spend cap dollars elsewhere. Given that we also have actual needs at CB & DE makes their decision all the more painful. Instead, they took a player at a commodotized position which is also not a need for the team (though certainly we improved upon our current RBs). It's also a position where teams have been able to sign veterans to modest contracts and get excellent value out of them. In fact .. we just .. did that. While DMC is not my favorite RB, his contract is an amazing value compared to Brandon Carr's original free agent contract with us!

Instant Fantasy Analysis - RB Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys

I don't get the "win now, ignore traditional draft value" pick of Zeke coupled with a 2nd round guy who might not play until 2017. Ramsey at #4 and then Derrick Henry at #34 seems like a much better "win now" combination, given the huge bump we'd get at CB. Sure, Derrick Henry isn't in the same league as Zeke, but with our line I'm convinced that a pounder + our cheap veteran backups would still be a top tier running attack. Or take another RB in the third ... I think there are a bunch out there that would be just fine here

    NFL Mock Draft 3.0

I'm fine with Ramsey or Bosa at 4, but they better draft a RB in the 3rd to 4rth round area this time ..

Alfred Morris Agrees to 2 Year deal with Dallas

Honestly I expected Dallas to take a RB in the 3rd/4rth last year. D Johnson would have been amazing for us & IMO his success is an even stronger reason why we should not draft a RB in the top 10. Sure, we're not guaranteed to get someone as good as D Johnson in the 3rd this year, but with our O Line I'll take our chances of immediate ROI for a RB in that round. Also .. that RB some people thought we should pay tons of $ to keep last year? 3rd round draft pick On the other hand, I do think an amazing defensive talent ( which is what we should get at #4 overall ) at CB or DE can have an immediate impact on the team & should also be a cornerstone for years to come .. when a RB might not justify a second contract. Sure, a top tier RB would have immediate impact as well ( arguably more when considered without context ) .. but I'm actually pretty excited about our RB squad right now. While not top tier, I think it is a strength for us currently - it's definitely not a huge source of weakness like aspects of the defense. So in terms of incremental value, I think it'd be a lot easier to improve the team by taking a defensive player. Overall I'd be thrilled if we got a disruptive defensive player in round 1 and a RB in the 3rd/4rth to pair with our O Line. I'd also be fine with a QB at #4, if the FO is convinced whoever is left is a viable franchise QB. If they fall in love with Elliot, they at least need to trade down some to take him & get more picks for defensive players

    NFL games without cable?

Just looking at Skystream, it seems equivalent to buying an Amazon TV/etc streaming appliance & it has Kodi (xbmc) pre-loaded as an application? I assume the devil sports thing is a Kodi extension to help you find the content? I use an Amazon Fire stick ($30) to run Kodi for my stored movies/anime/etc but I'll have to look into this extension.
  15. - A fair wage depends on the job & the cost of doing business at the location in question. Costs vary greatly from say New York to middle of nowhere Oklahoma/etc, so a single # is not really helpful (or the point). - Definitely many people do make decent money at large corporations. This doesn't mean that the distribution of income is fair at all levels & that it cannot be improved. I certainly did not claim that "Managers make too much at large companies" or "professional engineers make too much at large companies" or even "specialist doctors make too much". Someone might be able to make a case for some of those, but I'm just not interested in it. The salaries (even of specialists who make 500K+ a year) pales in comparison to executive salary. - Those with more marketable skills and also experience (college degree or not) can command higher compensation, certainly. I have worked as a software developer for small startups more than large companies (but I have worked for 2 large companies) and I was happy with the salary I made during those years. So yes, the system as it stands is definitely working in some cases ... for some people. This doesn't mean it is without flaws or cannot be improved. Or that I thought our executives were worth multiple millions a year Everyone wanting to go to college & the cost of tuition rising are definitely also significant problems. I won't speak for anyone else (and I realize this was not posted in response to me directly), but I did not rail against any of those in my post, because I see them as separate, valid problems that are not linked to wage discrepancy. Thus, I don't think pointing out these problems invalidate any of the concerns about wage discrepancy. Rather it's just a tangent, if one worth of (separate) discussion. No one is saying executives should not make more than others - the issue is that they make ridiculously more than they did 30 years ago while others have not seen those gains. This graph shows how the gains from productivity were shared with wages in two periods. Note the remarkable difference! http://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/2015/02/labor_gap/04e656c70.png And here is a graph showing the ratio of CEO to worker pay during a similar period. There seems to be some correlation, yes? http://management.curiouscatblog.net/images/ceopay.jpg So yes, I think the ratio of top tier vs bottom tier pay increasing by a factor of 10 is an issue. How this has happened (globalization is a big part) & how to fix it are pretty lengthy topics though & I'm about out of time for now and I'm not an economist I'll just say some of this ... should slowly fix itself over time as global living standards equalize. Then there will not be any cheaper places to make things and productivity will (should!) continue to increase with innovation. But by then we may have hit the point where automation completely changes the market anyway - yet another topic! Also, I don't believe corporations are evil (in general). They are morally ambivalent entities playing the game by the rules given (or pay the consequences). Many of the costs of their actions are not currently reflected in the rules (think carbon footprint) & they have significant control of the rules to prevent that from changing. Where we can .. we should try to change some of those rules, but it will be a very difficult thing to accomplish.
