Brandon Belt set major league record with 21-pitch at bat...

San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt set a Major League Baseball record Sunday when he battled out a 21-pitch at-bat against Los Angeles Angels rookie right-hander Jaime Barria.

Belt fouled off 16 two-strike pitches before lining out to Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun. The at-bat lasted 12 minutes and 45 seconds.

Belt broke the modern-day record (since 1900) previously held by then-Houston Astros infielder Ricky Gutierrez, who had a 20-pitch at-bat against then-Cleveland Indians right-hander Bartolo Colon on June 26, 1998.

Barria threw 49 pitches in all in the first inning as the Giants loaded the bases, but he escaped without allowing a run. In contrast, San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Johnny Cueto retired the Angels in the first inning on just 19 pitches.

Belt saw eight pitches in his second at-bat against Barria in the third inning, this time singling as the Giants loaded the bases again, this time with no outs. Barria was then removed from the game after he had thrown 77 pitches.

He was charged with two earned runs as reliever Noe Ramirez allowed two of the runners to score.

The at bat took almost 13 minutes. That is a crazy AB.

In response, Commissioner Rob Manfred has suggested adopting softball rules resulting in foul balls on two-strike counts counting as a strike out.

At least after a couple yeah.

Of course, that would fock up all the hitting stats forever. And stats and history is all baseball really has.

it's time to speed up MLB.

Like a bunt, if you foul off a ball with 2 strikes. sit the fock down

Nope.

Game's are too focking long.

No one cares about stats and records anymore.

Shorten the season and shorten the length of games

I said this to my brother last night as a joke... But since they want to speed up a game that is fine the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if they did something stupid like this...

I did. Steve Lyons was actually talking about it before Saturday's game. He said even when you are at your hottest, you could be heading for a slump. He was talking about how good Alex Cora was at picking times to sit guys (when they were hot) before the game. Apparently, maybe Cora out-thought himself.

Mookie Betts is well rested for today's game. Sox didn't need him yesterday

Ive never cared that much about stats or records. I just wanna see a good ballgame.

Foul balls arent a major reason why the games take so long.

Relief pitcher warm ups, specialized pitchers and all the primping and posing by pitchers and hitters are far worse time wasters.

Implementing softball rules for MLB will make the game worse, not better.

MLB ratings are dropping at alarming rates. Games are too long. Kids don't watch.

Kids dont watch because too many games (especially playoffs and WS) start when theyre already in bed.

This infuriates me about all sports. My kids would love to watch night games with me, but theyre in bed by 9. Yeah, we have a DVR, but that sucks the fun right outta the whole event.

Beyond that, focking cable is killing viewership as well. Ive been able to watch exactly 2 Cubs games so far this year. 2!

When I lived in Chicago, every single Cubs game was on broadcast tv. I watched them lose game after game for years. And when they had day games, Id often play hookie from work and go catch a game at Wrigley.

On the nights when they werent playing, Id tune in to see the White Sox.

TV revenue drives everything now.

That is the one thing that I loved about WGN and WTBS back in the day... You knew that there was going to be a baseball game on...

That is how I became a Braves fan... We got WTBS on our cable system and I was 10 or 11 and could watch baseball every day in the summer... WGN wasn't on our system, so I would watch the Braves suck it up every day...

Theyre obviously making more money by doing whatever they are now. But, its not good long term thinking if they want to grow the fan base and get more kids into the game.

Kids don't really watch full games of any sport, this will be a big problem in a few years.

It's too slow, all of it.

The average NFL game lasts over 3 hours and has 11 minutes of action.

You are worried about a foul ball or 2?

Good point.

It's the pace, not the length. Let them extend the time between innings for commercials and concessions, just move it along when play starts. People will be content to look at their phones between innings.

I remember seeing that there is less action in a football game than a baseball game...
