Is Tiered Rankings best strategy for Auction?

Recommended Posts

That's the angle I'm taking this year.

Where can I get a list of "tiered player rankings" (PPR)?

I've searched, but haven't came up with much that is any good.

Thanks

Idk if you really need tiers. Here is how I did my one year in auction. I studied my ass off for one and I created a spreadsheet on excel. I listed all the players who would be drafted and divided up the pages into different positions. I gave the mainstream rankings a value (I had to convert normal snake draft rankings into actual auction value. It wasn't too hard but it took some serious time). After all of the players had a mainstream value, I gave them my auction value. I basically had an Average Auction Value and a Maximum Auction Value. I subtracted the two, and the players with the larger spread of value in favor of my rankings were the ones I targeted. I rolled through the league that year and I dominated the auction draft.

They asked who wants to throw out the first player. After doing my research I found that the first player thrown out can be had for extra value, so I tossed out David Johnson. Another strategy i read about on this site, Art of the Auction, said to be more aggressive. So I bid on Beckham and got a good deal. AJ Green came up two players later and I got a good deal on him. Everyone is telling Me You just blew your money! Ummmm no I didn't. And I have David Johnson, Beckham and Green. Of course this was a new league. The main point was the spreadsheet and value differential

honestly, creating your own Tiers is easy. 3 steps:

1. obtain fftodays projections or the projections of someone else.

2. (optional) I personally tweak the projections because no matter which source you use for them, there are always gonna be a few players you think will do better (or worse) than projected. part of this process usually involves checking a second source and doing research on players whose projected points vary a lot.

3. look at the updated projections, and players who project out at reasonably similar numbers are grouped together in a Tier.

In the process of sorting this, you will occasionally find that there are players that dont fit into one tier or another.

I usually make those players a tier unto itself.

usually fftoday has a tiered list they release prior to the start of the season anyhow. you can pattern your tiering system after that, but in reality it's not rocket science, but it is somewhat time consuming.

the big gain from doing the tiering yourself is that you learn the players strengths and weaknesses far more than you would otherwise and you get better at tweaking projections based on upside and risk. You will find that some sources will completely ignore the risk for certain players and will over estimate the risk for other players on certain things. I think a large part of it happens based on hype. so for me the key is looking at a second source and/or doing your own research to make sure the risks are applied in the way you feel best gives a true estimate of what the player is worth.

Lastly, I will sometimes tweak the list further.... not based on my projections, but based on hype. if everyone is down on a player and his ADP is substantiallly lower than your projection, I will knock a player down to the top of the tear below. the main reason I do this is why would I pay a second round pick for a player everyone is taking in round 4? so by knocking him down a tier, I am probably getting him in round 3 at a discount to where I value the player, but slightly more than what the world values that same player.
