My dad just had a heart attack...

Recommended Posts

Passed a kidney stone last night. Then had chest pain. Major blockage. Did a balloon and are doing a stent now.

Man, I hate that I'm not there. I'm sure my mom is on her head.

Anyway. Just can't sleep so wandered over here. I'm sitting in a freaking casino.

Thoughts and prayers with you. Cant be easy being that far. Sucked enough being a 11 hour drive from my dad when he was sick.

how my fat fock father hasn't had a heart attack is a focking miracle.

68, morbidly obese, never had any issues but his knees.

Good news is that once you get past 65 or so there's good evidence saying you essentially want to put on weight. All the people that were going to get heart disease or other complications from it most likely would have croaked by 65 and one of the biggest issues for old folks is not being able to keep enough weight on to get them through periods where they're sick.

Edited to add:

Sucks about your dad TTBOM... Modern medicine is amazing though. Heart attacks are not nearly as bad a thing as they were 30 years ago.

My mom had one about a month ago. 3 stents put in and a lifetime of drugs. Thoughts and Prayers for you and your family in this difficult time.

Apparently he was 100% blocked. Thank god he was already in the hospital when it started for the kidney stone.

They seem to think there is likely minimal damage, as they were able to treat so quickly. He will have to go have more stents in a couple of weeks, and be on drugs from here out. But it appears he will be ok.

And peenie, yeah. I am dying to go to the nearest airport and hop the first plane back. But it would do nothing. He will be out of the hospital and home before I could get there, and then I would just be hanging around the house with nothing to do but get in the way.

I knew when I chose to move out here that I would be away for things like this. I will likely not be there when the goodbye times come either. I hate it, but it is what it is.

Damn, good thoughts for him.. My pop has 5 stents, not sure how that's possible.

Thoughts and prayers. I'm sure as your dad was passing the kidney stone he was thinking how it can't get any worse than this. That's a bad day.

That sucks, but at least he had it while already in the hospital

Did he JUST have it?

When I made this thread, he was in surgery. The girlfriend was asleep, and I'm in a hotel. Obviously I wasn't going to sleep, so I wandered the casino waiting for an update. Figured I'd talk to you guys.

So I just heard from my sister. He's awake, wants to get up and get out, which is good. No Appetite though. Looks like he'll be ok, although I venture to guess this will change life a lot.

Thank god he was in the hosipital. As much as they travel, if this had happened while they were in some sh!thole, he'd be gone.

Incorrect. Maintaining muscle mass and bone density is important as we age, but "putting on weight" isn't, in the absence of involuntary weight loss. And obesity is unhealthy at any age.

The average age for a first heart attack is 66 for men and 70 for women, so your statement about most people dying from heart attacks earlier is also incorrect. Here are some good stats and tables on the subject: https://www.heart.org/idc/groups/heart-public/@wcm/@sop/@smd/documents/downloadable/ucm_449846.pdf

Titans, hope everything goes well for you dad. PM me if you have questions about his care.

Glad he's still kicking.

Mom's can size?

A little respect huh? His mom's husband just had a heart attack and you're asking can size? Jerk!

Sister's can size? She's fair game. Also, glad he's doing better.

Glad to hear he's doing ok. I'm sure his lifestyle will change. Usually does after a major scare that could have resulted in death. My parents aren't near me either, though not as far as yours to you. I dread the day I get that phone call and hope I'd be able to make it there in time..
