Auction/Keeper league set up

I am the Commish in a keeper league. Next year we are increasing our keepers to 5 and moving from snake draft to auction draft.

I lean toward keepers counting against the $200 auction budget.

My question is, how do you determine the dollars a keeper cost? Would I use an Average Auction Value list from some fantasy site?

I would go with last year's auction price plus a certain amount. Whether that's a flat amount or a percentage increase is up to you. If you use some average price then people just keep their best players and that's no fun. Basing a player's cost on his previous year's price rewards those who bid well the previous year and the increase in price from year to year hopefully prevents someone from keeping a player for his entire career.

This is where I was going. Really the ideal way to go, though I get it if you and league mates wouldn't want to do this especially those with great keepers, would be to put all players back in pool for auction next year.

 

Then for following year can do the keepers. And as Ehlana says, then if you paid $27 for a player, if you want to keep him, cost you $27 off your budget the following year. So taking this year as an example, if you hit on say like a James Conner for $4, could keep him for only $4, thereby rewarding you for drafting well. (I've been in snake draft keepers that do similar, you may already do this, where if you draft a sleeper in the 10th and he performs like a 2nd, can keep him the following year for 10th).

One option is to assign a dollar value to each round from the snake draft and free agency.

 

Say $50 round one, $40 round two, $30 round 3, down to $5 for free agents.

 

Not a perfect system, actually a pretty poor system, but if the league is dead set on keepers and converting to auction then it is about the only option I can think of.

 

Changing rules/costs after the draft is really not a good idea. Blowing it up and starting from scratch is the best option.

If everyone is coming back next year, why not hold the draft now? Obviously it would have no effect on this year, it would be on paper only. Player rankings will change quite a bit between now and next fall. But you would have a base to work off of for keepers, and get a practice draft in. Just an outside thought.
