Heading to 'nawlins this weekend

Recommended Posts

got a work conference next week at the Westin Canal Place, so the wifey and I are heading down early to arrive Friday then she's heading back home Sunday while I stay for the conference.

bunny or anyone else from the area...

was looking at the Cajun swamp tours, and curious if you had any tips or thoughts on whether or not it was worth it. Also food suggestions would be cool; definitely want to hit a decent seafood joint, the wife probably will want a beignet and would be interested to hear your preference on po boys. Other cool things to do with the wife so she lets me PIIHB/ ATM or any other acronym she's never let me try before later that night would be cool

Also, where would be a good place to watch the royals games on Friday and sunday nights? And would it be possible for me to scalp a single ticket to the saints game on sunday for like $40 or $50?

Will you be renting a car, driving in, or taxing it? Makes a difference.

All of the swamp tours are pretty much the same depending on how much you want to spend. Top of the line are air boat tours, which I highly recommend ,but are a little more pricey. The average boat tours are pretty cool and they are all pretty much the same. I'd recommend one closest to the city to save time in your day to do other things later. Honey Island is a good one. Ask the concierge what they think about which one is time friendly. Feeding alligators is a trip. Well worth it.

Define "decent" when it comes to food? There are to many great restaurants for all budgets. What's your price range? Especially seafood/creole places. And what kind of atmosphere? Touristy or local? Or a mix? Drinking? Wine? Fried seafood? Boiled? Appetizers you like? In the walking distance of the Quarter?

Beignets at Cafe du Mondes is a must. Again, if you're in the Quarter and are walking, I'd go to Mothers, Johnny's, or Central Gricery for poboys. Can't go wrong with either. Don't go to Masperos on Decatur. Big tourist trap.

As for the Royals games....I don't know. This is not a baseball town. Most bars are showing college football. LSU is playing Saturday night and most will have those games on. Ask the concierge to call around for you. I'm sure he'll know a sports bar down there that will have the game on.

Your not getting a Saints ticket for $50 before the game. If you head down to the Dome around game time you might get one after the game starts starts. If you wait till the middle of the first quarter you should be able to find a brother with a good deal. Do not buy a ticket in the 600 section above row 20 for more than 30 after the game starts. Don't wear a Riyals jersey either. You'll have sucker written all over your face.

You want wifey to do ATM Saturday night? Come see me. The Gretna Festival, the second best music festival in Louisiana, is this weekend. You can walk out your hotel and take the Gretna Ferry across the river. Don't have to worry about driving. It's not that expensive. Lynard Skynard is playing. The people watching is outstanding. Beer is cheap. I run one the KOC beer booths, hint hint. Did I say Lynard Fawking Skynard? It's a great festival. South Louisiana at its finest. Fawking Joan Jett is playing Sunday night. This isn't the Missouri State Fair.

PM me if you want more info.

solid info, thanks

we'll be flying in but not renting a car, so likely taxis. Is there a train?

I think we'd prefer restaurants that are closer since transportation will be an issue. Don't want to drop a load every time we eat, but wouldn't mind spending a little more for dinner one night for seafood $100-150 for the two of us, but for the other meals would prefer to keep it more $20-30 per person. I think I'd like the local stuff more than the touristy but really probably ain't going to be picky.

Schedule probably looks something like this:

Land Friday around 1

stop by hotel (staying at Wyndham on St. Charles Ave Fri & Sat)

grab a bite

find something to do to kill some hours

dinner

try to find a place that has the royals on around 8:30

celebrate the victory around 11:30

Saturday is completely free and open, so will probably try to work in a swamp boat tour, but other than that just looking for to do and good food to eat. I did see the Gretna festival was going on, and we are Skynyrd fans and have seen them a few times, just not sure that's how we'd prefer to spend the time on the trip.

Sunday the wife departs around 12:45. Would be nice to find a place to grab brunch before she has to get in a taxi for the airport. Then I might be open to trying to get into the game, and really don't care if I don't get in at kickoff. By 3:30 I'd like to find a place to catch the Chiefs/ 49ers, and then the Royals/ Angels at 6:30. I'll be able to check-in at the Westin at Canal Place that afternoon.

Monday morning I can tour the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans as part of the conference, then looks like they have a Second Line parade lined up for us from the hotel to Historic New Orleans collection museum guided by Roots of Music Brass Band to a reception featuring the Pfister Sisters. I'm not really sure what this means.

Tuesday we have meetings lined up till 5, then it's dinner on our own. Will probably head out with some of the other attendees

Then Wednesday we're done at noon and I depart at 3:15

:dunno:

I'll hook you up with a good brunch place for Sunday and have a few calls out for the Royals games already. You should just explore the Quarter on Saturday after the swamp tour and hit a poboy place I recommended. Hit the flea market and a few other attractions. Take a dirty nap and start from scratch.

I'll link you to some good restaurants for dinner tomorrow.

And the others found out that, despite the mayor, Houston isn't very friendly to vagrants.

Sorry I didn't get back to you. I worked the Gretna Festival all weekend and forgot to check in here all weekend. To much fun working the beer booth. Got to see Joan Jett last night. She still looks good and plays a mean guitar. Great show.

I'm suprised you got a ticket that cheap. They're playing like sh!t but it's still the only game in town till basketball starts. Was that the face value?
