Instant Fantasy Analysis - RB Rashaad Penny, Seahawks

Recommended Posts

Seattle rarely fails to surprise in the NFL Draft and Penny is the latest in that line of selections. Running back has been a problem spot for the Seahawks for years, but Chris Carson showed enough in a short time last year to at least get another chance to prove he could play a full season. I'd even argue he's a better player than Penny. Getting past my displeasure with the pick, Penny will contribute immediately as a returner and broke 82 tackles as a runner and receiver - over 20 more than any of his draft classmates - and led all running backs in this draft class with 3.32 yards per carry when contacted at or behind the line of scrimmage. As those metrics suggest, the 2,000-yard rusher from a season ago is between-the-tackles grinder, but he frustrated me with his inability to pull away from the second-level defenders. Given the draft capital invested, he will be the favorite to be the early-down workhorse for a rebuilding Seattle team. I specify "early-down" because he is merely an average receiver at best at this point and the worst blocker I evaluated in this class. It would not surprise me in the least if he ends up sharing the workload with Carson for the foreseeable future, with Carson getting more work on passing downs. Penny figures to be a low-end RB2 option at best for redraft fantasy purposes in 2018, while he figures to come off the board within the first five picks in most rookie drafts.

Ugh I am not going to pretend this pick makes any sense what a waste of draft capital. Anyone could take one look at the team and see the offensive line is the worst unit in the entire NFL.

Carson and Davis are actually pretty good running backs but when they are hit full speed in the backfield and have to spin and juke just to get to the line of scrimmage of course there going to end up with concussions and destroyed knees.

What really hurts is the O-line should take a step forward with Brown and Fant around for a full season, and a plug and play guard or versatile linemen would go along way to stabilizing it and giving it a chance of becoming a strength for the team.

Add in the holes that have sprung up all over the defense and I would have preferred they traded back and got another pick. IN FACT I STRONGLY SUSPECT THEY WANTED TO AND RAN OUT OF TIME AND SAID WHILE SHOOT HERES WHO WE WANTED IN THE THIRD.

I really dont understand Seattles willingness to leave their oline in shambles. They seem to do a pretty decent job drafting everywhere else. The pick makes zero sense

I now wonder if they're gonna move JD McKissic back to WR. Throw him in the slot?

Essentially getting 2 position spots for the price of 1 draft pick?

I will say (I have no idea if this is the right thinking or not, I'm just relaying to people).Oline was no way no how gonna be the pick.

They (Mostly Solari, their new oline coach) are very happy with LT Brown(expect the extension to come as soon as picks get signed), LG Pocic, C Britt, RG Fluker.

The question from a starting prospective is at Ifedi RT. He's pretty bad. But I think they believe either Solari can fix him, or Fant can come back from his injury and take the starting spot from him.

Stupid pick in my opinion. In a good class why take one in the 1st when your line may be the worst in the league? At least they traded down and got some picks they needed. But still makes no sense to me.

I agree. The really tough part is not having a 2nd rounder. They said they did have offers for the pick, but nothing great to do the deal.

So if this is the guy (an impact guy on offense) that they wanted, they gotta do it at this #27 pick.

Like I mentioned earlier. They feel like they addressed the line already. All they had was Britt. But a 2nd rounder in Pocic last year. An inseason trade for a llegitimate LT in Brown. A new Coordinator who said I want this free agent at rg, get him, and they did.

I'm not saying it's gonna work, but it's not the line we saw in week 1 last year. Heck, it's not even the line we saw in week 17 last year.

Then on D. They always feel like they can get guys late. They got a third, two fours, and four fifths. So bring in bodies, and a couple will hit.

Just listened to the press conference. The significant tidbits I took away was:

Penny is gonna be the 3 down back. Chris Carson is the backup.

He'll also return balls on special teams to help lighten the load alittle on Tyler Lockett.

They were lucky to trade back from pick 18. Green Bay came in at the last minute to make the deal. And they were prepared to take him at 18. (That would've really turned some heads).

They had a team call them after the selection and offer a trade for him. It was the first time Schneider had ever experienced something like that in his career, not only with Seattle, but also his time in Green Bay too.

I would have taken Derrius Guice before Penny 10/10 times. Penny is nice though. Problem is the same as with Barkley is that the Seahawks and Giants have a putrid offensive line

Agree

Guice would have been the better pick up.

NE got the best value at RB by far.

I LOVE this pick myself.

To me RB was my #1 want.

Carson, yes - Has a shot to be ok. But, he showed for only 2-4 games and then got hurt. He never really even had over 100 yards I don't believe. Who knows what he's going to do after injury. (i.e see Rawls)

Carson is a 7th rounder with no draft status. We have nothing else IMO after him that can handle a load.

Getting a stud 1st round RB IMO is a big need!

We have to fix that running game and it's not all about the line.

We brought in a great blocking TE, and we've spent TONS of draft capital on our line already. (Picks, Draft picks, Free agents, etc.)

No way did we need to address the line again. We just need to let them grow up and the new coaches can help with this as Cable and Bevel sucked ass.

The RB choice I love too. Explosive. The best stats even over Barkley. Best RB to break tackles. Runs through the middle and shows he has the ability. Can break away with speed and go the distance. Not a lot of wear and tear other then one year. Perfect attitude. Bowling bowl type.

Perfect size at 5'11 220 and ran 4.4 range. (Better then others mentioned)

Has play making ability with kick return TD's. I saw some down the field catches. I think he's fine there too. 3 down back for sure!

My only concerns would be pass blocking. I think he can improve.

Small school and competition. This is probably the biggest concern. M. Faulk came from here though. Great RB's come from small schools sometimes.

Love the pick!

Go Hawks.

P.S. - Don't trade Earl.... (Need more then a 2nd if you do)

That's a good point on TE Hawkfin. I totally forgot about Dickson when I posted their thoughts on our oline.

We went back to the traditional 3 down blocking TE (but who can still catch too).

When Duane Brown arrived the Seahawks line played a lot better. They signed DJ Fluker this offseason. They also have a new offensive line coach. While there's still work to do to make it better, I think it'll be better than people think.

For me, I love the landing spot. Penny is definitely in contention for the 1.02 in rookie drafts imo

I'm from San Diego, watched Penny for 3 years here, Your getting a much better player and person than you think. Great returner and receiver out of the back field. Has both power and speed. Also there a lot of tread the tires in penny, was a back up and return guy for three years, only one year as the starter.

He's also a great teammate, always gave credit for his success to coaches and OF line. Your gonna love this guy and his attitude, he'll do what ever it takes and what every the coaches ask..

Awesome to hear. Thanks.

I listened to alot of podcasts since thursday (I work third shift).

My main take a way from all of them is they love the player, just didn't like the high pick. We'll see what happens.
