Concussion protocol? Really?

Recommended Posts

We all saw Matt Moore get killed on the field yesterday. We were watching when he died, and I'm pretty sure that many of you were as shocked as I was to see him returning after 'sitting' out one. single. play. From the time when he was barely able to stand enough to get off the field to when he was next throwing a pass was what...two minutes, maybe? Three?

So today, the NFL has mumbled some sort of meaningless crap about how they're going to look into how the concussion protocol is administered (while naturally not commenting on yesterday's highly hinky 'procedure').

SI posted an observation of the situation (snippet follows):

...

Moore lay there, in what appeared to be so much pain that being placed in concussion protocol seemed to be a Best-case scenario. But just as soon as fans came to grips with the improbable idea that third stringer T.J. Yates would be tasked with saving the trailing Dolphins, Moore came back into the game, missing just one snap—one! Despite being hit in the jaw (one of many catalysts to brain injury) Moore was cleared to play faster than you can say “Concussion protocol? What concussion protocol?”

Dolphins coach Adam Gase offered little clarification after the loss. “He saw the guy and even came back and said he should have just taken the sack,” Gase said. “When they told me he was coming back in, I started talking to him and he was good. They went through the league’s deal and then our trainers; he cleared everything.”...

I just hope that a good player and good man has not become ruined by others' haste and greed.

Just cause it was a hard head hit doesn't mean he was concussed. If he passed the test got no problem returning when he did

Would agree.

I'll wait to see what the NFL finds out first.

Haste and Greed is and as been what the NFL as been about for a long time.

To all appearances, there was not enough time to adequately assess his injury, though. I agree with your statement - but it's the 'he passed the test' part that I am not necessarily buying.

The main point being: what test?

Observable symptoms

There are seven observable symptoms used to identify players with concussions. Those are:

Any loss of consciousness

Slow to get up following a hit to the head ("hit to the head" may include secondary contact with the playing surface)

Motor coordination/balance problems (stumbles, trips/falls, slow/labored movement)

Blank or vacant look

Disorientation (e.g., unsure of where he is on the field or location of bench)

Clutching of head after contact

Visible facial injury in combination with any of the above

When spotters or other medical personnel see those signs, thats when the protocol goes into effect.

And now (over two freaking weeks later), we get this:

Ian Rapoport Verified account @RapSheet

From @NFL, the results of the Dolphins' QB Matt Moore concussion protocol evaluation are in. Protocol "not strictly followed."

Gee, you think? Anybody who watched the game knew that the moment they witnessed it.
