Vikings4ever 496 Posted January 30, 2017 http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/29/49ers-announce-john-lynch-as-general-manager/ The 49ers’ General Manager search came to a surprising end on Sunday night when the team hired John Lynch after no indication that the Hall of Fame finalist and FOX broadcaster was a candidate for the job.The team confirmed the hiring after the reports of their choice emerged during the Pro Bowl. 49ers CEO Jed York told Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group that the team was impressed by Lynch’s “leadership and communication skills” and liked that he played for Bill Walsh in college. York also said he believes Lynch can build a “great staff,” which will be important given his lack of experience as a personnel executive. That lack of experience didn’t stop Lynch from reportedly getting a six-year contract with the team. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Kyle Shanahan is expected to get the same term as head coach and that Lynch took his first step toward the job by reaching out to Shanahan recently to let him know he was interested in making the move to the front office. Bills04 45 Posted January 30, 2017 Yeah, I just saw this... Poor 49ers fans! I truly wonder if Shanahan will WANT TO be the Head Coach, with John making player personnel decisions. Lynch doesn't strike as me as intelligent. During broad casts, he gets stuck on ONE train of thought, and repeats it ad-nauseum through out the course of the game... And, he married a Playboy model. Nice looking, but also likely light in the intelligence department. Looks like the 49ers won't be competitive for another decade, at least!
Frozenbeernuts 1,652 Posted January 30, 2017 I really don't understand the move. The there are so many aspects to being a GM from negotiating contracts with players to drafting. I'm all for going non establishment, but the person needs some type of experience and qualification imo.

I mean if Jed York and Corky from life goes on were lined up side by side the only way to tell the difference would be facial features.
Marshall 98 Posted January 30, 2017 "...the team was impressed by Lynch’s “leadership and communication skills” and liked that he played for Bill Walsh in college. Well now, that right there should certainly qualify Lynch for an executive position. As far as 'communication skills' and the ability to build a 'great staff' goes, it can be assumed that Lynch has -some- friends and connections with people who don't mind talking with him - unlike York, who has the intelligence and social skills of a dead snake. Edited to add: Really, it's a win-win for York, as he can now state that he has filled the vacant GM position (which NO qualified candidate was interested in occupying) - while still basically holding the team in complete thrall, given Lynch's 'lack of experience'. Still trying to figure out what the hell Shanahan is thinking.
Frozenbeernuts 1,652 Posted January 30, 2017 Kyle Shanahan had better have some good scouts. Head coaches do not have enough time to properly scout all the college players on top of normal HC duties. It's part of why Chip failed. He thought his system made the player. Wrong. The player makes the system and that player had better be of real NFL caliber. Just scouting from one conference is asking for failure. Why is it a hard concept?
TBayXXXVII 2,105 Posted January 30, 2017 I'll wait to see who he hires as his coach, but my instincts tell me he'll do very well.

Marshall 98 Posted January 30, 2017 Still cannot quite grasp how York's mind works (or doesn't): York told MMQB on Sunday night that he was willing to take a chance by giving Lynch his first front-office job and referenced Shanahan's input in the decision. "So many opportunities are missed in the NFL because people don't want to do something different," York said. "We're OK with that, because I am confident in Kyle and John. John has watched John Elway and how he's built a team in Denver. As easy as it is to say he hasn't built a team yet -- I get that -- I talk to Kyle, and he says John is the most prepared of all the TV [people] he meets in the production meetings before games." weepaws 2,451 Posted January 30, 2017 I'll wait and see how he does before judging his performance. The team is awful right now , so it's going to be interesting and fun to see how much change for the good he does make. I'm praying for his success.
