penultimatestraw 473 Posted April 26, 2017 One of my climbing friends is a college student, who apparently missed class last week and turned in his assignment late. He told his professor he was sick; she responded he'd need a doctors note or he'd get a 20% deduction from his grade. So he asks sends me a message asking to write the note as a favor. I don't know if he was actually sick, but I suspect this is just an bad excuse. He's a good kid otherwise, but not a close friend. Really just a climbing buddy. What would you do? NewbieJr 540 Posted April 26, 2017 Write it for him. As a friend. But tell him you're not really supposed to do this, since you didn't actually see him as a patient, but you'll do it just this time as a favor. That'll send the message that he shouldn't make a habit of it.

Djgb13 2,338 Posted April 26, 2017 It's a note, not a prescription. Don't see a reason for you not to write it. But the fact that the guy didn't turn it in on time and missed class is on him

But the fact that the guy didn't turn it in on time and missed class is on him Figures you would condone falsifying the note. I know it's just an excuse note but it is unethical and you being a real doctor and all makes this so much funnier. What a Doosh

fandandy 3,311 Posted April 26, 2017 I wouldn't do it. Tell him, sorry. That's illegal. Another climbing buddy of mine did that back in the 90's and he's still in prison.
wiffleball 4,639 Posted April 26, 2017 I'd do it for a friend. It's not illegal and the deadline is arbitrary. It's school for Pete's sake. However, it doesn't sound like you guys are that close and the fact that he assumed you would do it after the fact without talking to you ahead of time is a pretty move. So given the few facts you've given us, yeah, I'd probably bail out on that.

wiffleball 4,639 Posted April 26, 2017 Having said that, there are some real hard ons on this board. The kind of guys who would citizen's arrest you for walking when there's no traffic but the little red hand is flashing at you. "The law is the law!" Is the mating cry of the stupid. fandandy 3,311 Posted April 26, 2017 How is it not illegal for a doctor to lie about patients he saw? I'm not gonna google it but I'm sure that;s illegal.
NorthernVike 2,080 Posted April 26, 2017 In light of my recent health issues, could you also write me a note for my golf buddies stating the following... 1) NorthernVike is not allowed to hit out of sand traps, he is to be given a free drop in the fairway. 2) NorthernVike is allowed to hit from the whites. ( I would like to hit from the red's but they took my colon not my pecker.) 3) NorthernVike doesn't have to pay any gambling debts on the course as he has too many medical expenses. Please put it on your letter head and make it look official. TYIA

I think it might not actually be illegal. But it's certainly not ethical and may be a violation of his hippocraptic oath.

What a Doosh Oh shut the hell up drunky. Last I checked, only friends you have are named jack and Jim. It's called having connections dipsh1t. You may not like it but it's the way the world works. I get out of tickets cause my former football coach is a state rep. Is it ethical? Prob not. Is it illegal? Nope. Same goes for this. TimmySmith 2,782 Posted April 26, 2017 As a college recipient of a Dr's note or 2 (friend's dad was a Dr and he stole a pad and did great work with it), I'd say do it. No one cares, including the professor.

wiffleball 4,639 Posted April 26, 2017 Honestly, if the Prof wanted to dig into the note, HIPPA would shut him down hard. just depends on how far you like to take it. In this case, sure doesn't seem worth it.

Djgb13 2,338 Posted April 26, 2017 its not illegal or conflicting with the Hippocratic oath. These people have no clue what they are talking about. You actually need someone in the medical fields advice. Personally, I see no reason not to. It's just a note. Hell you don't even have to write it. All notes at our office are done by the receptionist girls.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted April 26, 2017 Well this is my response to his message: Creating a doctor's note may be an issue without an actual doctor's visit. As I don't have an office, the only way I could write a note on hospital letterhead (as I'd do so for a patient I'd seen) would be for you to have been admitted, which obviously you weren't. Otherwise I am effectively committing fraud, which isn't cool. Why did you miss the class and assignment? Were you actually sick? Sorry if that comes across as uptight, but as a general rule, honesty is always the best policy. If you were sick but didn't see a doctor, tell your professor as much, offer to make up the assignment and do something extra to preserve your grade.

penultimatestraw 473 Posted April 26, 2017 I wouldn't. I am sure that this crosses a professional code of conduct. I do a lot for friends. Some things you cannot do, and they should understand. This is exactly how I feel. I looked up some stuff on ethics, but couldn't find anything analogous to this situation. But it is dishonest, at the minimum, and I'm a little irritated my friend would try to take advantage of my position in this way.
