Walmart seeks refund from Hyde-Smith after 'public hanging' comment

Walmart wants its money back from Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

The retail behemoth asked Hyde-Smith to return its campaign contribution after the Mississippi Republican praised a supporter by saying, "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row." Hyde-Smith said the statement was made in jest and denied any racial connotation.

Walmart responded to a tweet from actress Debra Messing pointing out that the company had donated to Hyde-Smith. "Completely understand your concern," Walmart tweeted from its official company account. "Sen. Hyde Smith's recent comments clearly do not reflect the values of our company and associates. As a result, we are withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations." The company gave $2,000 to the senator.

I guess it's okay to pay slave wages, but not okay to make jokes about the good ole days of slavery and...

I take "public hanging" to mean what they used to do to convicted criminals in the town square. I take "lynching" to mean KKK grabs a black dude and hangs him cuz he's black.

Don't take the job if they offer "slave wages"? :dunno:

Do slaves get paid? If so, what is the standard pay rate? What level of education do you need to be one? What parts of the world are employing slaves? And why would they be paying them if they have sunk to the level of slavery? This is confusing right at the start.

Hyde-Smith wins Mississippi Senate runoff

JACKSON, Miss. — Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith has won Mississippi’s Senate runoff, defeating Democrat Mike Espy after drawing intense scrutiny for comments during the four-week runoff campaign.

Hyde-Smith had 54 percent of the vote to Espy’s 46 percent with 95 percent of precincts reporting after the Associated Press called the race. The result means Republicans will hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate next year, and it makes Hyde-Smith the first woman elected to represent Mississippi in the Senate. She will have to run for reelection to a full term in 2020, after being appointed to fill Thad Cochran's seat earlier this year.
