'85 Bears 30 for 30

Recommended Posts

Watched it last night. Another great nostalgia trip, but entirely too much focus on Buddy Ryan.

That defense gets all the credit, but their offense was actually #2 in scoring that year. I wasn't aware of that. Yeah yeah. The D set them up, gave them great field position, etc. But they still had to deliver.

Lots of crtiicism of Ditka's failure to better protect McMahon and his decision to bring in Flutie the following year. And of course, his failure to get Sweetness a Super Bowl TD.

Watching that D play, it struck me that there's no way they could play that way today. One of them even said they'd get flagged every play in today's game.

Overall, a pretty nice job, but fock Buddy Ryan anyway.

well, when you're plus 23 in turnovers, you better be able to capitalize on that.

I remember looking it up, i think they were like 45 over the next Offense.

So, basically 2 points per turnover.

Yeah, I'm giving that to the D.

And yeah, I hate Buddy Ryan.

But then again, other than Sweetness, I hate that whole forking team.

Man, if Coach would have signed Uncle Rico, we totally would of won another SuperBowl, no doubt, no doubt in my mind.

Ditka is/was a hard headed moron who rode Ryan to a SB. The Skins ended any hope of a dynasty. There will never be a more dominant defense.

Agreed........... Plus you have to factor in that the CHI defense was always going 3 and out.. Which means the CHI offense got a ton of possessions - which also means the other team's defense was always on the field and gassed... When you factor in the field possession they enjoyed too - it greatly inflated the potency of that offense.......... That entire team was Defensive fueled.

1 offensive TD over 45 yards. 17 team passing TDs.

34 picks (7 with 3 or more), 61 sacks (6 with 5 or more). Unreal.

I'm not saying the offense was great. I'm saying I was surprised they were the # 2 scoring offense in the league.

The NFL has had plenty of sh!tty red zone offenses but the '85 Bears had enough talent on offense to take advantage of what that defense gave them.

I was a teenager when that Super Bowl was played here. Did they tell the story about one of the news stations flying their helicopter over one of their practices a few days before the game? Jim McMahon decided that if they wanted to see something, he'd be the one to delivered it and mooned em. I think he got fined for it. A friend of mine had a copy of the picture behind his bar.

He also supposedly said (never proved) something along the lines that "New Orleans is a dirty city, the people are dumb, and all the women are sluts." He said he never said it. They had women picketing his practice and he got some death threats. Most everybody here laughed and his point was hard to argue with.

They touched on both subjects.

McMahon mooned the media to show them his swollen, bruised ass cheek.

The comments attributed to him about all NO women being sluts and all NO people being stupid was complete fabrication. The local news made a retraction of the whole thing.
