What's an interesting local initiative in your state?

Recommended Posts

Like I said, I think this is really the story that the national media keeps missing. Probably deliberately. Federal Congress is worthless regardless of who's in charge. But the states have some pretty interesting things on deck and at stake.

I'm very in favor of the independent board to determine election districts---ie anit-gerrymandering proposal. Recreational MJ on the ballot too.

This... uh... this sounds like Michigan as both are on the ballot.

If you're from Michigan, somehow that's escaped my notice all these years. (Something, I may be wrong, but IIRC you're from Ohio)

I'm voting against the anti gerrymandering proposal. How will this be paid for? Seems like a waste of money plus om generally against modification of the constitution unless it's absolutely necessary, which this is not. Perfectly fine with the pot though

In Florida they're trying to ban greyhound racing. I love the dog track. Cheap food, cheap beer, and gambling.

I was born in Ohio, at 3 family moved to Wisconsin(hence I'm all Packers/Brewers/Badgers), graduated UW, moved to Florida for 6 years, but have spent the last 14 in Grand Rapids.

There is an outdated ordinance in Minneapolis that doesn't allow neighborhood restaurants to serve hard alcohol unless they are located in a special commercial zone close to downtown.

These restaurants (which are right up the street from me) can currently server beer and wine, but no cocktails.

It is up for repeal, finally. We are slowly getting rid of antiquated Blue Laws.

I see this as one of the biggest problems we have in a our system. People complain about incumbents having unfair advantages, needing term limits, but one of the reasons those are problems is we let incumbents create their own districts. I find that absurd. In Michigan the GOP got 52% of the vote last time, but took 70% of the seats, that's not how democracy is supposed to work.

As far as paying for it---the proposal is that a committee meets every 10 years after the census to create new maps---compared to other issues, I don't think that even counts as a drop in the bucket.

IMO - not voting against gerrymandering is saying you want rigged elections.

Want to spend millions rehabbing heroin addicts and let them out of jail. Including letting dealers and those ones that steal out.

Michigan is mostly red when you look at the county level other than the cities.

So it makes sense Rs will win more seats yet not bring in as many votes due ti densely packed cities that vote heavy D.

Its also silly to think this will stop gerrymandering. Who do you think will put the people in charge of defining the districts.

This proposed constitutional amendment would:

• Create a commission of 13 registered voters randomly selected by the Secretary of State:

o 4 each who self-identify as affiliated with the 2 major political parties; and

o 5 who self-identify as unaffiliated with major political parties.

• Prohibit partisan officeholders and candidates, their employees, certain relatives, and lobbyists

from serving as commissioners.

• Establish new redistricting criteria including geographically compact and contiguous districts of

equal population, reflecting Michigan’s diverse population and communities of interest.

Districts shall not provide disproportionate advantage to political parties or candidates.

• Require an appropriation of funds for commission operations and commissioner compensation

Any resident of Michigan can apply for the position and every 10 years there will be a random drawing.

Silly to stop gerrymandering, so everyone should shrug their shoulders and ignore it...sorry, again any Gerrymandering is anti-democracy, and is one of the biggest reason incumbents get re-elected at a 90% clip.

So one person gets to decide who is on the panel. And you think this will be totally fair? You actually believe the people chosen will be 100% random?

I agree gerrymandering is a problem but giving that kind of power to one person isnt democratic. It's asking for trouble

The panel is chosen by lottery

Under VNP’s proposal, Michiganders could voluntarily serve on the Commission through one of two channels. First, there will be an open application process, where any registered voter in Michigan who is interested may apply. At the same time, the Secretary of State will randomly mail a minimum of 10,000 registered Michigan voters and invite them to apply. Our policy committee explains why this two-pronged approach is important below:

“By randomly selecting a pool of eligible voters in Michigan and inviting the general public to apply, we can truly say that every voter in Michigan, regardless of his or her political experience, profession, or education, has the opportunity to meaningfully participate in the redistricting process.”

To be eligible to serve on the Commission, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must:

- Submit a completed application.

- Be a registered voter in Michigan.

- Identify the party (if any) that they affiliate themselves with, to ensure a balanced commission.

- Not be, or be closely related to, a current or former (in the past 6 years) political insider, including a candidate for partisan office, elected official to a partisan office, registered lobbyist, and party officer.

- Not be otherwise disqualified from office.

I think if you really think it's a problem then you should have voted yes....

Voters Not Politicians rallied thousands of volunteers across the state to drum up enough signatures for the proposal, which calls for creating an independent commission in time for the next round of redistricting after the 2020 Census.

The group submitted its petitions in November with 425,000 signatures, well beyond the 315,354 needed.

It's not like it's being done willy nilly.

I'm in CA taking care of my dieing mother. Been inundated with ads for a couple of initiatives:

1) A proposition to allow cities to enact local rent control. Currently, rent control is largely illegal statewide in CA. So, illegals drive rent costs up and the state makes it difficult to build new housing so the answer is to fock over landlords. Sounds reasonable.

2) Unions have been trying to unionize the dialysis industry in CA for a number of years, without success. So they got a proposition on the ballot to limit the profits of dialysis clinics. Focking disgusting. Unions using people's medical care as a pawn to unionize the industry. Wouldn't expect anything less from them though.

Politicians wouldn't be on the panel, so not sure what you are talking about there...and currently it's the politicians who are making and gerrymandering the districts. Seems you are the one putting faith that they are going to do a fair job...

Most of the polling has people in favor at 60% so, good chance it passes. Find out in a few hours.

I think the big thing here is there is that if anything, the dems will just split them the way they want them. I feel this wont be evenly split group amd the committee will cost way to much to accomplish nothing or close to it.

Colorado is looking to officially abolish all types of slavery. Currently in the constitution is wording that's essentially (paraphrasing) "Slavery is illegal, except for prison inmates". People are up in arms because it still says a form of slavery is legal. I voted against changing it.

Some dudes did a study where they showed gerrymandering can cause a landslide victory for one side change to a landslide for the other with small changes in districting. I think they submitted the data to the Supreme Court to support ant-gerrymandering cases.

Did you know it's pronounced Garymandering?

There's a whole story behind it. But if you go back and listen to Reagan for example, before the term was very popular, he pronounced it correctly. It comes from some dude back in the Northeast. It's his last name as I recall.

Average home prices are starting to slow down on the increase. Still, I think we've got some of the hottest markets out there. But remember, that Colorado Vegas and Florida fell really hard back in 08. They needed to get caught back up I guess. But it's still freaking insane. Too damn many people.

And Colorado has too many people selling 1500 square foot homes in Cali for $600,000 and moving to Colorado. Good news that the increases are slowing.

The one in Florida caught my eye. They repealed the law preventing convicted felons from voting. Since it takes 60% of the vote to pass, it was a bit surprising. What was really surprising is that they said that 9% of the voting age public in Florida is a convicted felon. :o

Looks like that state will be blue moving forward.
