Oh I believe Pen's legit... and gives good opinions. Just seems less progressive than some.

I dunno. I've never seen or heard of a doctor who bashes other doctors, medications, and his own profession as much as pen. Either he's not a real one or he's so egotistical that no one can do the job right except for him. Either way I don't trust people like that

There are many studies and doctors that question hormonal treatment for women, below is one that talks about about the negatives.

http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/104/4/499

But personally I think that it is a quality of life issue. If you feel that the risks are worth the reward than who is anyone else to question that decision.

I think that most of us are smart enough to read the research on the subject and then make a decision based on how it makes us feel verse potential negative consequences.

Thankfully I am still a couple decades away from making a decision.I get the benefit of more research. I hope it has minimum negative consequences, because i certainly will be in line when I get older.

Stallone seems pretty damned fine for a 70 year old guy.

Hey focker... i didn't snag them from some guy on the corner.. this is a pretty damned good legit doctor. Not a kid just out either. He doesn't seem to have the same opinion as our geekclub resident sawbones.

Was mostly just a dig on Dr. Djgb ;)

I was agreeing with you. I think the benefits outweigh the risks. But it probably does carry a slight risk, but so does drinking and that did not stop me from drinking 5 beers tonight.

Quality of life decisions. Playing video games and drinking beer on the weekend shortens my life, but not by much and i enjoy it. Who cares.

You shaddup Jerry.. I was sore! haha...

Know what's funny? I watched you do a set in your office, and you looked like I feel every day.

Yeah, I can bump em out, but I'm SO tired I don't want to.

I'm slow on the uptake with board stuff sometimes. :(

Probably the roids.

Also, Dr. djgb questioning pen's medical credentials is the funniest thing ever. I mean yeah, pen could be a buzz kill in so many ways at a social gathering, like say you drank. Or ate meat. But to question him, given djgb's already admitting to stolen doctor honor, is pathetic.

Whatever you say jer. Like I said he might be legit but I would never go to him for medical advice or trust it.

That's fine. But you blatantly lied about being a doctor, and you are questioning another poster who by all objective measures is a doctor, and my advice is that you might not want to do that again if you don't want people to laugh at you.

Personally I don't care what people think here. It's not like they are real people in my life. But like I said someone who bashes their own profession and colleagues is either: 1) lying about being a doctor or 2) is just so egocentric that it's not wise to trust

You're so full of sh!t.

Everyone, in whatever profession, knows the sleazy side of their profession. Lawyers. Teachers. Cops. Soldiers.

Pen is probably more forthcoming about that stuff on here than he would be in meatspace.

See, where you use this place to create a pathetic fantasyland, most people use it to discuss sh!t they can't or shouldn't in real life.

There's side effects to everything. Testosterone injections are fine. Stop being such a stick in the dam mud

No, most medications don't have life threatening side effects. Hate to break this to you, but being a healthcare provider isn't about being fun - it's about treating disease and maximizing health.

Ever wonder why the medical field doesn't bat an eye if a woman comes in and is off hormonally? Meds given in a heartbeat. Samenthing for a guy and it's illegitimate bullsh!t.

Seems pretty double standardish.

Hormone replacement therapy has also fallen out of favor for many women, mostly because of potential for bad side effects - cancer, stroke, blot clots, etc.

THe thing with pen is he claims he is a doctor yet bashes a lot of stuff doctors do. Basically insulting his own profession. When you have multiple doctors and studies showing the benefits of something yet some quack here says another it's pretty hard to take that kind of medical advice. I'd listen to your actual doctor before I listened to anything people say here about it

There are plenty of sh!tty doctors out there, especially those that let financial gain cloud their medical judgement. Testosterone supplementation for "low T" is an easy way to keep your patients happy and make money, but it isn't without risk.

I'm not saying Mmmm absolutely shouldn't use testosterone, but I'd only do so under the oversight of an endocrinologist (hormone specialist), not a primary caregiver or urologist. He needs to have appropriate evaluation for vascular disease and prostate cancer in particular before committing to it.

And peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trails showing benefit of testosterone supplementation are pretty limited. But I don't expect you to understand any semblance of quality evidence, as critical thinking isn't a skill they teach in PA or EMT/medic school, or whatever the fvck you are claiming as your medical background.

For the record, I'd take medical advice from pen before djgb13.

Actually, I'd take any kind of advice from him over djgb13.

Oh I believe Pen's legit... and gives good opinions. Just seems less progressive than some.

You don't want a "progressive" doctor. You want a thoughtful, intelligent physician who makes decisions based on the best available data, weighing the risks and benefits of proposed treatments and helping you make the right decisions based on your individual circumstances.

If your doctor didn't tell you about downside of testosterone supplementation, including all the things I've mentioned, I'd seek a second opinion. But not Dgb's.

There are plenty of great doctors, but it is easy to take shortcuts and practice bad medicine. And I've posted many times in agreement with medical opinions/recommendations, including some of yours :shocking:

Of course. I didn't say Mmmm shouldn't take testosterone supplementation, but he needs to be fully informed before he does and see a doctor qualified to discuss the pros and cons in the context of quality of life.

It's very easy to be sold on a short term increase in energy, muscle mass and libido, but a bit more difficult once you stroke out or are riddled with cancer.

If you say so. I've mostly seen nothing but negativity and have come to associate that with a lot of things you post about medical advice. Like you hate your colleagues, your profession, and the medications that doctors prescribe. A lot of meds do have life threatening side effects. HOWEVER, like testosterone injections they are very RARE. Those are the key words here. There's been HBP meds, thyroid meds, chokesterol meds that can have rare side effects that can lead to death. Hell a lot of meds can. But it's rare and the numbers are so low that it's essentially safe to still take them. That's what I'm talking about here. So don't be a stick in the mud about him wanting to improve the quality of his life by having testosterone injections once every 2-4 weeks (usually the prescribed amount of getting 1 mL during that time frame).

I don't hate my colleagues, the treatments they prescribe, or my profession. I don't like sh!tty medical advice, however, and it is really easy to lead patients astray.

Mmmm is gonna do what he thinks is right, but there is nothing wrong with trying to ensure he knows what he is getting into. If he wants me to STFU, I'll happily oblige. Your opinion is irrelevant.

I've been mis-diagnosed, and prescribed unnecessary medication by both a primary care physician and a urologist in the past.

In both cases, the medications had some pretty bad short term side effects. Who knows what the long term effects are.

Having a specialist give a second opinion is sound advice.

And, unless your specialist is atop his/her field, an opinion from a second specialist can also be helpful.

One thing is for sure. If you discover that Dr Djdipsh!t agrees with your current course of treatment, call 911 now.

Good luck. In addition to follow up testosterone levels, make sure they do some sort of screening for prostate cancer (finger up butt, blood test) and check your total blood counts periodically, as increase in red blood cell count is the potential side effect linked to vascular events.
