Any One Event Fundamentally Change Your Life Trajectory?

Recommended Posts

Tired of your sorry for yourself attitude. Fock, do something about your situation other than cry over spilled milk.

I'm not normally one for secular-worldview-friendly motivational speeches, but this reminds me of this Matthew McConnaughey one I saw last night.

Some good points.

Ill agree with that part too. Humility is a good thing, and failure is the best teacher there is.

Those of us here watched you go through it too. You def made the right choice and turned it around. Life is too short, as we saw from Rholio, we need to do whats best for ourselves with what scant insignificantly small time we have.

My mom died the month of My 7th birthday.

Focked me up for a while.

But probably ended up in a better place now because of it. And sometimes that's hard to admit

That sucks. I always have a huge soft spot for kids who lose their parents so young. Says a lot about a person when they come through that.

Hmm. You should come here then. Lol

This may very well happen soon.

For this whateverthefock weeklong holiday we just had, my MiL wanted to visit relatives in Chongqing. Boring as fock waste of three days and a long ass train ride there and back but it was a family obligation. It's what you do when you're married sometimes. So now she's wanting to visit more relatives. (Grumble, grumble :wall:). At her age and theirs, it could be the last time to see people. She's already seen her husband and one of her sisters pass away, you can imagine.

Anyway she says she wants to go to Shenzen next, maybe during winter. My ears kind of perked up at that. Shenzen? Hmm... With you there, this won't suck like Chongqing did.

Except that if you come during winter holiday, my ass wont be here. I get the fock out of this hive mind hellhole every chance I get.

Losing my father. Might go to jail sooner than later. The ride is the most interesting one. Falling on an empty place and sword is where it's at.

Yeah, my mom died at 9 years old. What was amazing was that she could have kids at such a young age.

I had my first anxiety/panic attack inside a movie theater that was in a Las Vegas casino. I was 18 years old at the time. I still remember the moment vividly, as if Im looking in from the outside in slow motion. I was running down the hall looking for an exit, because I felt like I was going to hurl. All of the flashing lights and sounds of the slot machines were like strobes in my brain. I finally found an emergency exit which triggered an alarm and just blew chunks in a stair well. Anyways, that single event lead to a downward spiral for close to 10 years, where I became pretty depressed, recluse and agoraphobic. During that period, the internet was just starting to get useful, so I spent a lot of time on the computer and taught myself to code and also met a girl (my wife) in Texas. Fast forward a year later and shes moving out to California, Im back in school getting my BS in Computer Science, and have my life back under control.

Its been 20 years now. But till this day Ive never finished watching that movie. Dont think I ever will. Just thinking about it as I wrote this post make me a bit anxious. The Last Action Hero. Fock that movie.

Will probably regret posting this.

I'll give a positive story: 29 years ago I moved to Phoenix for a job on a rotation program. They hired about 25 engineers each year for this, and it was like a coed fraternity; they became my instant circle of friends. During one rotation I worked near one particular girl, I'll call her Mary, and we got to be good friends. Totally platonic, in fact I dated her roommate for a while (also on program). One night we were all out dancing and I looked up to see Mary say something to another friend and that friend look at me with a :o face. It was clear that she said something to the effect of liking me. I was intrigued and thought "hmm, she is kinda cute..." I pursued her to get her to tell me what she said, and eventually we went on a date.

Here we are married 25 years this October with 3 kids.

Oh, and for those wondering, she told our friend "if I was drunk enough I'd sleep with Jerry." :D

We celebrated our 25th anniversary this past Tuesday. :)

Obviously, when someone posts a thread like this, they are looking for atypical responses, not marriage, divorce, death of a loved one, major injury, etc.

For most people, they find their passion in life around age 12. Bill Gates was first exposed to computers at age 13. Warren Buffet bought his first stock at age 11. Philo Farnsworth grew up in a log cabin and moved to a real house at age 12 that was wired with electricity which amazed him and set him on a life path to become an inventor. Elon Musk became an inventor / entrepeneur at age 12 when he wrote a video game on his Commodore VIC-20 and sold it for $500.

A couple of years after I got out of the Marines, I moved back home and took some crappy manufacturing job while I went to school. I was a contractor and didnt have benefits.

My friend asked me to go to a St. Paddy's Day party with him one day. At the party I saw one of my brother's friends from High School. We talked and learned we both worked at the same company (me contractor, he employee) and were both former Marines. He asked if I wanted to double my salary and come work in his department, which is almost all ex-military guys. Obviously I said yes and after a few job interviews, I was hired. I traveled the world, made a lot of money, and learned great job skillls.

Most importantly, a couple of months after I took the job, my boss asked me to give a presentation to a bunch of corporate folks. At that presentation, I met my eventual wife. We now have two kids.

I always think. What if I didnt go to that St. Paddy's Day party?

Birth of first kid. No doubt saved my life figuritively and quite possibly literally. I have past friends who are dead/still strung out/homeless/prison/dead end jobs/etc. and it is quite possible that I would be the same.

One of my earliest memories was being awakened by the sound of my mom yelling at my dad because he was drunk and had her pinned on the ground with her arm wrenched behind her back. I was 3 or 4 at the time. My instinctive reaction was to run out there and jump on my dad's back, wrap my arms around his neck and kick him in the back as hard as I could. That lasted all of about 10 seconds until he threatened to spank me if I didn't go back to bed. I was a poosay at that age. Luckily, my older brother had the wherewithal to run to the neighbor's house and have them call the cops.

Soooo, that and the ensuing divorce prolly had a lasting affect on my outlook on life.

Both are mine are school related.

In HS I ran around like crazy on the last day this particular scholarship was due to get references from teachers. I ended up getting it and it put about $25k in my pocket directly during college.

After community college I applied for another random scholarship a state school offered and got it so I got free tuition and housing from that in addition to the $400 a month check from the HS scholarship.

That second scholarship changed my mind to a state school over the 50k a year private school I had forst on my list..

I think coming out of college debt free and 15k in the bank instead of $100k in debt changed by like outlook

In 1986 a girl I was going after asked if I wanted to try SCUBA diving. Also in '99 I moved to Savannah for an IT job and met some guys that dove on the weekends for shark teeth.
