**Draft Discussion**

Recommended Posts

I couldn't believe that Scherzer might actually drop to 5 either. I thought if he got by Burt, and I had talked myself into thinking the Cubs might want to go another direction just because the numbers or above average SP already rostered...

Knew it was too much to wish for. :music_guitarred:

i definitely have a number of above average starting pitcher options. Lester, Hill, Quintana, Hendricks, but guys like Samardzija can kill you in categories, Chatwood isn't proven and Strailey has little offense backing him up. felt like my team had enough offensive depth with Valbuena able to cover the corners, Bryant being able to be put in the outfield if needed and my overall outfield depth with Heyward, Soler and Martin on the bench. so starting pitcher was definitely my target. the top 5 pitchers on my list have all now been selected, almost in order, but Max was the clear number 1. as i mentioned to Wonder when he texted that i was up, i'm not sure who i would have picked if my choices were Arenado or Bumgarner. Bumgarner being more of the need but Arenado being probably too good to pass up. that was in a scenario where the braves kept their pick and took Scherzer and the Indians took Stanton or blackmon which is where i thought the Indians might lean.

faced with that choice i probably take Arenado and shift Bryant into my outfield and just go with super offense

Sorry, had to get a minor procedure done at the clinic. Good news is I'm not pregnant (anymore). Let me go through the last couple of picks and I'll make mine in a few.

F-it. I'e always been a sucker for loading up on SPs. I've got enough outfield depth.... and I think this guy could have a really nice full year with that offense behind him. This was my plan since the supplemental order was announced but I wavered a little today as picks were being made

Had him on my radar actually too. Was stuck between him, Paxton and Tanaka but I don't trust Tanaka with how up and down he can be. Just hoping Paxton stays healthy this year.

i had Tanaka off my list. Paxton was my #2 and who I thought you were going to take based on need.

like i said, i really considered offense but this is a unique league and sometimes the right player isn't the best ADP guy. I hate the Yanks but i've always like Gray

also, part of why our trade talks were not going to go anywhere  . I simply dont trust a few of my depth pitchers, so while I might have 8-10 live arms in my rotation, I really only feel confident in about 6 of them

I needed a closer. The Cards plan on going bullpen by committee until someone stands out. Left me in a bad spot. Knebel gives me the closer I need and allows me to slot in the rest of my recidivist. Definitely a need pick. Was surprised he was still available though.

Traded down, figuring at least of of 5 and hopefully one of 3 would be available to me at OF. Surprised to find ALL of those guys still available after 7 picks after the trade. I really needed to pick up OF that would play everyday and not be below average.

I traded away 2 potentially solid relief pitchers but sacrificed little in who I was targeting and gained additional help where I needed it most. Now I can be excited about my chances again.

In hindsight, knowing how the draft played out, I probably would have gone Scherzer/Yelich. Going into the supplemental though, I didn't feel that I needed another elite SP but needed a top end bat to compensate for losing Bruce/Encarnacion.

Yelich at the very end of the draft is a value pick for sure. Posey will do well in your lineup though.

Absolutely. I think if you wanted offense, specifically outfield, there were always going to be a few great values falling. The 2nd round especially becomes one of team need.

I really wanted to take Yelich (ask lambert hahaha) but eventually I reasoned that i had enough bats to mix and match and another starting pitcher is someone I can use every time they start.

NOT to say I wouldn't start Yelich everyday, ofcourse I would. But it also puts a productive hitter on my bench. If that makes sense.

Also I could have gone Bumgarner and Story at SS...

Time will tell.

True true.

I had committed going into the draft to go SP and OF in that order just for value. But I needed a lot of help at OF going into it with no one in top 250 (Pillar, Granderson, Rasmus) My flexibility was limited as well because of it. I don't have much guaranteed quality at SP but I should have enough to rotate enough starts for at least 1 often 2 a day and keep the RP rolling.

I might now have productive hitters on my bench. Especially if everyone is healthy. But I've also diversified so I don't have only Jays at the same position. None of my OF right now is on the same team except Rasmus/Valencia (sorry Mookz) and they might tandem RH/LH until that team is fully healthy.

Myndraft was pretty simple. I thought there were only 7 elite players and I was picking 8th. I was shocked Judge fell as far as he did. Even with that happening, moving up to grab Arenado was the right choice for my team. It just gave me flexibility all over the diamond.

The trade in round 2 worked out great for me. I needed a closer. When I was approached with the opportunity to trade I was 4 picks away with 3 nice options. Knebel was my #1 target and he fell to me. Hated losing Piscotty but the Cardinals have 3 really nice players at AAA that are ready to jump up if needed.

I know, fock the O's a little bit on that one, that helps me zero this year.

All of a sudden we're getting some common players, here. <_<

See above. :( I think you took pity on me and let me have him.

Not sure why I didn't protect him in the draft over guys like Ubaldo and JJ Hardy. <_<

nah man, i had him on my draft list but just found reasons to bypass him because he wasn't signed anywhere. I think I was done drafting when the nationals picked him up. I immediately put him on my yahoo watch list waiting for rosters to be loaded. I even saw this morning that the draft had ended and Guard posted about doing trades and that was 6:45 am EST, i have no clue why i didn't go right to the site and add him, I think you added him around 8:45..... complete brain fart. If he does halfway decent as the Nats 5th starter hell get 10+ wins and 15 QS..... :wall:

I read you guys so wrong.

I figured Stanton/Judge Scherzer/Baumgarner

Top 4 pick. Wasn't sure OF/SP order but was shocked to see at 4 I had a choice of three of them.

Was hoping to sneak Gary Sanchez in late - it's all good I do not need TWO Yankees on my team.

i read things mostly wrong as well, and was even making sure to take team needs into consideration. I thought with no trades, that the Braves and Indians would be looking at SP more so than offense. Obviously, I wasn't planning on trades so when trades go down, all bets are off. Lambert trading up was definitely for Arenado. Still gotta say I was thinking the Indians were going SP. They have Kluber and Carrasco and not a bad staff by any means so I probably just thought of all the Indians offensive power and assumed pitching.... based on post draft comments, he missed Encarnacion and Bruce so even if you think you know teams needs, you probably forgot something, haha. Having talked to dcb I knew his desired top 3. I even tried to swing a trade but he wasn't budging off Scherzer/Bumgarner/Arenado. I did correctly peg you for Stanton at 4.

Again, before trades go down, I was thinking Guardbum was going to snipe Trea Turner from me with Tulo injured and Solarte not looking like the backup SS in Toronto. Then he traded for a startable SS and I felt safe again. He wound up trading back anyway which I'm sure he was more than pleased with.

Then comes curveball 29Guests. I never saw Votto going 5th but when you have a guy you want, you trade up and get him. I didn't see Goldy going 6th either. Definitely thought that would be Strasburg and when Bumgarner was on the board as well, ...... but the pick made complete sense with SPs available in round 2 and not a star 1B like Goldy.

Picking Trea Turner at 7 felt weird. A guy who would have gone earlier if he still was a 2B/SS/OF but felt early at 7 with Harper, Judge, Bumgarner on the board. Maybe because I hate the Yankees, I was never considering Judge but I definitely considered Harper and my biggest struggle was with the idea of going Bumgarner and following him up with Trevor Story in round 2. Short was my biggest need and my biggest ability to upgrade and in hindsight, Bumgarner + Story would have worked.

After me, Harper and the remaining 3 best pitchers were going to fall. Bumgarner, Severino and Ray. I even had BC pegged for Sanchez.

Round 2 is always a crapshoot.

C - Realmuto

1B - Miggy

2B - Cano

3B - Seager / Lamb

SS - Story

OF - Marte

OF - Buxton

OF - McCutchen

UT - Domingo Santana

SP - Tanaka

SP - Berrios

RP - Iglesias

RP - Rivero

P - Neris

P - Bradley

P - Vincent

3rd/4th starters - Jameson Taillon, Michael Fulmer

not a damn bad group. As much as i'd hate to have to share more exclusives when the Rays are not strong as is, the depth of supplemental talent that went undrafted probably speaks to the need for 16 teams if feasible. Then again, with 2 more teams owned, you probably lose 25%+ of the players we did draft to exclusivitiy
