This is gonna be an uuuuugly draft for me. #1 Supplemental Pick or bust.

I can promise to not pick Jhonny Peralta in round 1 so you can have a great 1st round pick. You are quite welcome.

I'll work on draft threads the next day or 2. 26 rounds. Then a 2 round supplemental.

Let's get the party started! I know we aren't officially kicking off until Monday the 5th but I say if you are ready and your pick is up go for it. It will only help us get a little bit ahead.

Meh. Normally I would start drafting but with my list being such garbage, I'm going to get as much spring training info and news as I can. Probably won't select until the 5th... but obviously others can

Yeah, that is a good point really. Some of the FA's could still get signed. Completely understand that man.

i was told to pop in.

just so i understand this, from what Wonder told me, i can begin drafting backwards from round 26 as long as the players are "exclusive" to me meaning only ever played for the Cubs, a team that is not owned, or have not signed with intention to play for a team conrolled by another owner?

thanks in advance. i'm going to start and if i make a mistake just erase it or tell me and i will change it.

Looks good so far to me but you are pick 13 in odd # rounds not 11 FYI.

The other thing about exclusives with this late free agency going on, is if you have one and you draft him in a later round but he signs with another represented club, he becomes available in an earlier round. Now you can still change your late round pick and pick him earlier but you cannot change already made early picks to do so.

Now you can still change your late round pick and pick him earlier but you cannot change already made early picks to do so.

I read this this morning and I was thinking about it a little bit during the day.

I feel like maybe we need to collectively come up with a rule or change the current rule in regards to this issue. I know this offseason has been abnormal, but my rationale for wanting to discuss a change is that I feel it is fundamentally unfair for someone to have a situation where ..... this is all just an example.... let's say they make their 1st round pick. Then one of their exclusive players gets traded or signed to another owner's team 6 hours later and because that owner hasn't selected yet or their "clock" hasn't expired, they can swoop in and nab that player but the previous owner isn't allowed to cancel and change their pick. (I know we have rules for changing a pick like it has to be done fairly quickly and/or no one can have made a pick after you). Maybe that player that is no longer exclusive would have been their clear cut top draft pick but they simply get screwed because of timing.

I don't think we have ever had an issue where a trade or free agent signing has happened during the draft. At least not an important one and at least not as long as I've been in this league but these types of offseasons may be the way baseball is headed.

The draft aspect of this league is fun because you can select guys who used to play for your squad, plus the chess element of who else has access to your draftable players, and being able to mix things up each season and deciding how to fill the holes in your lineup..... I think making a draft pick and then having your hands tied when some sort of trade or signing announcement is made would be a big blow to the fun factor.

Are we really saying that part of people's strategy has to be blowing an early pick just to safeguard against a trade rumor or the possibility that an unsigned player signs with a represented team? I'll use the Rays as an example. There have been a lot of Alex Colome trade rumors. If we are in round 9 and I use my pick 9.1 and a few people pick after me and then it's announced that Alex Colome has been traded to the Orioles, Mookz can snag him immiediately and I can't do anything about it. There's no strategy or chess element there, its just shitty luck..... I know all teams are in the same boat but that also means all teams could be impacted by shit luck.

It also applies to players who are not exclusive as well. Players available to a few teams are still impacted if they get signed by or traded to yet another represented team.

I guess what I would propose is a rule that once we reach the announced draft day and start time, things "lock" and players are only available to teams that they have

A] already accrued an at bat or inning pitched for

or

B] were on that teams roster prior to the draft starting

..... or am I overthinking it and everyone likes the structure as it is?

Fock, I think I re-loaded everyone's teams back on their rosters when renewing the league

I never have to write these catchers names down again

Francisco Pena

Tony Cruz

Brayan Pena

George Kottaras

Adam Moore

Miguel Olivo

leaving me with the plethora of many pina and erik kratz behind the royals rostered catchers

I guess I just see shitty luck as just that. Things happen. Trades, signings, injuries, all of them play a role what our teams and our chances become. Does it suck if you have to spend a higher pick on someone who could be exclusive to you? But another team might not even have someone of that caliber to that at that particular round to even compare to that player or how they would fit on their team.

Someone mentioned last season about a "redo" pick or something of the sort if a Supplemental player was injured before the season even began. That got no tread because, well shitty luck.

I'd certainly love to be able to somehow find anything to help smaller market/free agent teams that could level the playing field in this league even more but I'm sure where to do it. If others support or have any other ideas like these, let's figure something out. With such a short turn around before this years draft I'm not sure anything could be put in place we all agree to but let's have discussion.

It's not even really about leveling the playing field. It's more the idea that when we start the draft, we all have lists of players and we know who shares those players and we get to plan our course of action. The dice roll may mean you have no chance at a few players on your list but that's only for round 1.... and ultimately you end up making a decision on who to draft and who to accept letting get away.

But once a draft has started and y8ve made your pick and then one of your big name players gets traded, you never had the opportunity to decide to pick them or let them go. You may lose them simply because of the timing of the trade (or free agent signing).

As for injuries to supplemental picks, I'm probably not totally against a replacement pick at the end but I tend to view injuries to already drafted players as luck that must be dealt with. If I pick David Price at 1.1 and he blows out his arm a week later, nothing I can do.

The issue with mid draft MLB trades and signings is more about the idea that all owners may not then have an equal opportunity to draft that traded or signed player.

Flipping the script. If a big name free agent were to be signed by the Angels during our draft and it was my pick, I'd be pissed that I couldn't draft that guy. He's going to be playing for my franchise this season and I should have every right to draft him, whether the draft is in progress or not.

Are you saying like the Angels hypothetically sign Mike Moustakas while we're in the midst of the draft? At that point it goes to who is up next in the draft as to who can pick him first, right?

Whoever is "next" up eligible is the way it currently is yes. That's WW's point. You have a strategy that right now you "could" be conceivably set at 3B knowing that Moose is yours exclusively. You draft him with a 2x.x pick and move on. But then he signs, you've just picked someone else let's say at 3.03, ted and I make picks at 3.04 and 3.06 based upon available and then the Braves sign Moose and he now becomes eligble to Burt at 3.09.

Current rules, Burt can take him. You lose out on an exclusive as he is no longer exclusive.

WW, idea is that because of the strategy you played to NOT pick him yet and go elsewhere, you now lose out on a key player in your draft. So if I say this right, proposal to LOCK the eligible players to what they are come 5 March.

input/ideas...

It probably won't gain traction and I certainly see Blackclouds side as well.

Basically what I'm trying to avoid is transactions happening that automatically award a player to an owner because any other eligible owners already made their picks that round.

If right now, Lance Lynn (cardinals exclusive) signs with the Angels... cool. No problem. Both owners can start planning accordingly. If he signs March 5th and Lambert already picked, then for the Angels it's just "oh sweet, great timing!"

I would say no, because had the Royals not signed Duda, and then all of a sudden they do I'd like a shot at gaining a player that my team now has acquired, even if it's only by luck.

Okay but th8nk about it the other way around.

Moustakas signs with Atlanta (guardbums example) while we are drafting. It's round 3 and you already made a pick. Burt gets his shot at Moustakas and you get no shot because of the timing of the signing.

Are you cool with that?

If so no problem but that is the whole basis of me bringing up the issue.

And I'm just spit balling. In the end I'm fine regardless

yeah I get it. Probably won't be a problem after our strike induced shortened season next year :bench:

I agree with WW and would be in favor of "locking" players into their eligible teams at the start of the draft, and/or making it so the late-round exclusives are actual draft picks that can't change. If real-life transactions happen after that point, that's great for next year, but the draft has already started for this year. In a slow boat draft, I don't like the idea of someone having an incentive to stall with their pick, which they might do if a player signing is imminent.

So moose would be an exclusive? :intrigued:

in my proposal, yes, as long as he is still a FA by official draft kickoff tomorrow. It also would impact more than just exclusives. Free agents owned by 2,3,4 teams wouldn't need to worry about a random signing during the middle of the draft timing up perfectly for the brand new team.

I assume this potential rule change, if it gains traction, would not go into effect until next season though since there has not been enough discussion and we kick off tomorrow.

again, the idea that an exclusive player could become non-exclusive as the draft is going on is a completely different phenonemon for both teams involved....

New team : never had access to the player before so really wasn't planning on having their services. The possibility of gaining access to them during the draft and being next to pick is all gravy for the new owner.

Current team : basically just sweating it out and hoping to dodge a bullet either by having the player remain unsigned or being lucky and being next on the clock after the signing (or trading) and still having to burn a pick to dodge that bullet.

i like that idea. not so much because of bad luck with the actual players signing or being traded but more because luck of where we are at in the flow of the draft shouldnt play a role.

I could go either way with the lock come draft start. Yes it should at this point probably start next year. Year 15 of this league BTW. I know we've had the situation happen at least once before. Can't remember who or the teams involved but I really think someone had to "unpick" a late round exclusive and pick the guy earlier to ensure they got him as he switched teams.

which is cool and not that terrible if that someone is next up to pick..... but not so much if the new potential owner is next on the clock.
