RB Position seems thin this year. Who can surprise if given the chance?

Recommended Posts

I noticed in a few mocks that by end of 2nd round there is not much left at RB. So if you dont have a RB drafted you could be in serious trouble. Each year I try to target a few RBs that I can snag late and hope they pan out. So I have compiled a list of RBs that could produce as a top 15 RB if given the snaps. Would like opinions on some of these and of course add any names I have left out.

Jonathon Williams - If McCoy was to go down

Joe Williams - Hyde not a good fit for new offense

Jamal Williams - Montgomery really gonna be starter?

Kareem Hunt - Ware will be losing touches to Hunt

Samaje Perine - Kelly may lose job by week 6

Deandre Washington - Looks great in camp and really how long can Lynch hang on?

CJ Prosise - This kid is the perfect size, great hands, just need him to win job and stay healthy,

Lacy having trouble with his weight still.

Rex Burkhead - if Gillisee gets hurt Rex could be an interesting RB to watch

Now other RBs like Coleman, Henry, McCaffery, are all being drafted early even though they

are splitting carries out the gate.

Any other RBs that you guys feel have a shot at producing if given the snaps?

If you can get Crow in the 3rd do so.

Mid 4th - Woodhead. Late 4th - Hyde.

Mid 5th - Abdullah. Early 6th - Powell. End of 6th - Perkins.

End of 7th - Gore. Mid 8th - West.

Early 9th - Procise. Mid 9th - Stewart.

Early 10th - Kelly. Early 11th J Williams.

Plenty of mid to late targets in ppr. Just have to hit on 1 or 2.

I think people are going to shy away from Lamar Miller this year but that offense was anemic last year. With any improvement in the passing game I think his numbers can only improve. They drafted another RB to keep his touches in check but i don't think it's a competition. Could be a good value pick with upside of a top 10 RB.

Oddly I kinda feel RB is fairly deep this year.

Ha..I feel like there's very few. But there's a million wide receivers.

I'm may go Rb 4 out of 5 rounds (we can start 3 if we want)....just seems you can get a second WR so late.

Late I like Booker and Rawls.

I love the way that Rawls runs. It is just hot with force. He also has a "feed me" attitude. I'm not sure that Lacy is a great fit for that offense. It Lacy time to get going down hill and the Seattle OL doesn't create much space. Rawls can shoot through small holes and get up to speed quick. He is a post hype sleeper and showed in a couple of games last year what he is capable. If the OL is a little better and Wilson is a read option threat again Rawls is a late dart throw.

Booker is another post hype sleeper. With his wrist injury he will fall near the end of the draft. Even before CJ's injury last year Booker was nipping at his heals. I know that he fell on his face when he got the job. Denver should be better on the OL this year and have a run game system that better fits with Booker's style. The juiciest part is the Denver 14/15/16 schedule vs NYJ, Indy and Washington.

I'm liking Cook more and more.

Cook listed atop initial depth chart.... I think he just leapfrogged Mixon and Mccaffrey on my draft boards.

my favorite sleeper is the most dynamic back on the Patriots roster. If healthy Dion Lewis is their best back, and remember how electric he has been

hes also the 4th Pats RB being drafted in ADP, thats value, a 11th+ round guy

Burkhead remains my favorite for consistency, but we know Belichick

me too.

there are a couple that are ranked outside the top 25 that I think will inevitably be within the top 25 by year end.

Yeah if any position is looking a little thin this year it's WR.

Of course it's "deep" compared to the other two positions since there's 64?starters out there (really more with slot guys who are starters too), but it seems not as deep this year as usual.

well, I knew the pendulum would swing the other way. we had one or two years with a number of passers at or near 5000 passing yards and when the defenses adjusted, now we will see more teams running with big, strong bruising backs that can break the tackles of the smaller, faster Linebackers who are ideally suited to stop the pass.

I expect we will see a shift in the next 2-3 years towards this again.

try doing a few "Zero RB" mocks and I promise you that there will still be plenty of late options for you to jump at if you're smart and know who to target. I've done it the last 2 years and it's been a huge success.

Last year I didn't take my first RB until rd 5 and still walked away with Jeremy Hill, Demarco Murray, Jeremy Langford, Spencer Ware, and Christine Michael. I was also smart enough to jump on Jordan Howard when I could see that Langford was going to bust, so already had Howard on my roster when Langford went down. And then just be good at playing the FA/Waiver wire game

And that's in addition to the 3 WRs and stud TE I already got early.

If you're lucky enough to get a Top 3 pick then take the RB, but outside of that don't be afraid to go Zero RB if the best players available early are all WRs.

Is anyone going to challenge Paul Perkins in NYG for touches? (Gallman?) I see Perkins consistently going around rounds 7-10 in my mocks. I think he can return some solid value.

I have a hrd time having faith in projections for players that have not ever been reliable a whole season yet

I pick 4th and I'm so frightened of RB depth I plan to take Freeman, assuming DJ, Leveon and Zeke go 1,2,3. Plenty of WR out there.

When someone said a wet paper bag can pass block better than him, it solidified my ranking for him which is about 45th or so.

Does he suck?

I kind of think yes.

But if he doesn't suck, then he's a huge focking bargain. Worth a roll of the dice at least, for sure

it all depends what price you need to pay for him.

I consider him to be a low end RB2 that has low end RB1 upside. (which means he gets ranked like a middling RB2...)

if you get him cheaper, you likely got a deal. If you pay more, Perkins will really need to perform to make that pick worth your while.

Pass pro is irrelevant to fantasy value, he's either playing or he's benched. But if he's benched because of pass pro then who gets the touches? Gallman? Darkwa? (Yuck)

It's about being on the field. Also, the Giants are a pass first team. They have actual playmakers at the WR positions. In PPR, I would actually consider Vereen over Perkins.

Seems like everyone is sleeping on Jamal Charles.

If he is healthy, he is money.

He is not too old.....and his value is outstanding right now.

He's either playing or he's benched. Pass pro is irrelevant to plays that are designed for him because he's not blocking on those plays. If he's starting over these guys that means his pass pro is good enough. He can be dynamic with touches, which I don't think he'll have much competition for.

In PPR I'm taking a flyer on Branden Oliver in every league. He is a good pass catching back and I think he can have a ton of value

My answer to OP is Perkins and I'm throwing a late puck at Shane vereen in every draft just in case he stays healthy.

I'm curious to see the next two preseason games, because Darkwa is a guy that could split carries with Perkins and possible be the goal line back, or he could get cut, I just don't know right now. We need to see Perkins show up and take that job. Draughn was activated from the pup the other day as well.

This should be an easy job for Perkins to win, yet it doesn't feel like he has yet.

Late rounders I've been getting/targeting:

Jamaal Williams - it's not that I don't like Ty, I'm just not sure his body can handle a full season of hits...even though he's slightly bigger (about 20 more lbs than Williams). Is he used to getting hit 15- 25 times a game?...and can he hold up? I personally think if you draft Ty, you gotta get Williams.

I will also 2nd the Fat Rob mention. He's not flashy but the starting RB in that O should be able to safely reach @ least 8 TDs. Hell, he didn't start until October 30th last year & hit 7 still. Considering where he's going in mocks, there are few (if any) that are a lock to see that kind of output w/o an injury to a starter.

excellent observation. I picked up Kelley late last year and he filled in and kept me in 1st place. He certainly was an asset. He was a great RB2 for me and I can see that happening again. Imagine a full season of that work?

Not to mention that Ty's PassPro has come under scrutiny lately. Williams has already proven to be more efficient in this camp (from what I've read).

I love Ty's talent, but he had trouble staying on the field when he was playing wide receiver, so what makes us think he will stay healthy as a running back? I want to believe in him as a rb #2, but I don't think I'm willingly to pay the price that I've seen him going for lately. His adp will have to come down for me to roster him this year.

I like Powell, Hunt and Joe Williams. Will be targeting all of them in the middle of the draft.

This! I'm also curious about this rookie the Bears scooped up.

Also, dare I say, keep an eye on Jamal Charles. He'll play in week 3. Coach Joseph wants explosive speed out of the running game. I don't know if he's getting it from Anderson. Having said that, don't sleep on Henderson, kid has some wheels.
