    Romo Blew It!

Redskins fan here who was at the game. At this point, I'm actually starting to feel bad for the guy. He's a pretty good qb but just fails so miserably on the big stage. Only a super bowl victory will overcome the stigma attached to him now.

The NFL sure has a lot of fines to give out!

    Homers Report

Steelers fan living in DC here. Nice summary. Agree that Garçon is looking great in camp - really quick and explosive. Moss actually lost a total of 15 lbs and is once again very quick into his breaks as well as coming out of them. He will be deadly in the slot - not a weekly ff starter but could have periodic big games. Hankerson also looks very good. I'm pretty surprised so far - there could be some real upside here when I originally thought they were mediocre at best. Defense has some hidden gems. Their front seven is very strong. They play a 3-4 with likely a lot of cover 3. They may end up being able to rotate 6 very good d-lineman (bowen, cofield, carriker, jenkins, baker, golston). 2nd year de Jarvis Jenkins is back from acl injury last year And in the past week has started to show some of the flashes of dominance he showed in pre- season as a rookie last year. The lb corp is really good and compares well to my beloved steelers. Fletcher was nfl leading tackler last year and orakpro and Kerrigan bring pressure off the edge. Orakpo has been working on a swim move that appears to be pretty effective. Hidden gem and sleeper For all you IDP players is lb perry Riley - he is about to explode onto the scene. By year end, this could one of the top lb corps in the league. Looks like safeties may be ok and play fine. Weak spot, to me, is cb#2 - they are probably moving deangelo hall to slot on 3 wr sets and unclear if they have a capable cb2 in those situations.

Dallas, Washington stripped of cap space

Exactly. The league approves all contracts and approved these at the time. The nfl would need to punish itself. There has been no "official, written" notice given to either team - Bruce Allen issued a statement to that effect. Also, in the skins case, they paid d hall 15m and fat Albert haynesworth 21m that year so the nfl set the punishment at 36m. However that assumes the skins would've paid them zero in 2010, which is obviously not accurate. Look for a deal to be worked out which will dramatically reduce the "punishment" and allow the nfl to save face.

    Grossman this week.

    Ryan Torain

It will very much depend upon the game situation and that is how Shanny will approach it (and smartly always does). Remember, Torain is not so great in pass protection and Hightower gives the 'Skins a much more rounded back that excels in pass pro. With the left side of the line decimated, this is a big deal and we'll see plenty of Hightower in there. With that said, I agree with the earlier comment that Torain could run with the elite if he stayed healthy - he is an absolutely fantastic pure runner (had heard good things coming out of Denver about him but wasn't a believer till I saw it live). So, it will depend upon how the left side of that line is doing and if the game warrants a lot of passing by the 'Skins. As someone SMARTLY said, only God knows who Shanny will use at RB. IMHO - I think it is a roughly equal mix today b/c I don't see the 'Skins pulling away and trying to protect a lead.

    Dear Mr. Hightower...

Isn't this what Shanny is known for? As a 'Skins fan, I'm lovin' it - 3 good RBs that can perform who will have fresh legs at the end of the season. As a fantasy owner, I'd steer clear. I do think that Torain is the best runner (i.e. best vision and best one-cut) but Hightower and Helu will get their share.

    The Eagles Secondary

Exactly. Here in DC, we've watched the 'Skins try to do this for the past 15 years and many had to smile this "off-season" when we saw Philly go down that same path.

    Victor Cruz "fumble"

Tony Dungy said refs historically have called "giving yourself up" only when sliding feet first. I'll have to research a little but I'm pretty sure there have been a few instances in the past where players have made the same mistake and it's been ruled a fumble. The refs, in theory are allowed to make that call, but I've only ever seen it with QBs sliding and not the few times that a player has actually messed up and relinguished the ball without being tackled. I wish I could remember the details but one game several years ago, a player actually tossed the ball to the ref and the ref moved out of the way because it was a live ball. What a doofus. I wish I could remember who did that. Probably a decade ago or so. Also...foudn this online article: According to NFL.com -The referees ruled Cruz down by non-contact. The NFL rule book allows officials the leeway to make that call. The language, per the rule book: “Official shall declare ball dead … when runner declares himself down by falling to ground or kneeling & making no effort to advance.” It’s a judgment call that Mike Pereira, former NFL vice president of officiating who now works as a Fox analyst, believed the refs got wrong. “I don’t know that he gave himself up,” Pereira said. “When you talk about giving yourself, you are actually talking about deliberately going to the ground. I think he stumbles and then lets the ball go. I think you have to play that.”
  11. Don't start Romo. His o-line is not stable and in case you didn't see it, the Resdkins put 2 blind-side hits on Kolb last week that were pretty vicious (one knocked his helmet off) - I gained some respect for Kolb, he must be a tough SOB. Also, they get Laron Landry back this week and that opens up a lot of blitz packages for them...and in case you haven't seen Laron this season on the sidelines, he's the completely ripped dude that looks like a linebacker but is playing strong safety - not the best in space but on the run and blitzes, causes some real havoc. It will present some real problems for the Dallas o-line that already has problems with base packages. Long story short, Romo doesn't last the game and if he somehow does, he's got a lot of pressure. (on a side note, it's a shame the Cowboys are going to have him play on Monday night...I know they are just trying to prop him up until the week 5 bye but I think there is a very good chance he doesn't play in week 4 because of the damage he'll incur in week 3...he'll get too beat up by Washington and he won't have enough time to recover from a Monday night game. Painkillers can make you play through a lot but they also numb the mind to the neurotransmitters sending signals that you have new injuries...until you wake up the next morning and find out something new is injured...and you just played the game on it thus making it worse...). Sorry for the soapbox. As for Cutler, I think he'll do fine against GB but pick up Fitzpatrick if you can... For team 2 - go Jennings and Bryant. NYG can't cover anyone - Maclin should have a solid game. Taem 3 - agree. Team 4 - agree, although I waffle a bit between Burress and McCluster.

    Pettigrew vs Davis

Washington is going to much more 2 TE sets this year because most teams can't defend both Davis and Cooley. And it gives a lot of flexibility (they can send one out, keep the other in and vice versa or keep both in to help chip on a run, which actually created some nice seals against AZ this past week)...and they have the TE personnel with Cooley and Davis to do it. Davis came into camp about 12-15 pounds lighter, cut and really in shape. He was good before but now people haven't been able to keep up with him. I like Pettigrew too in that Detroit offense but Davis has been very impressive in 2 just games.

    Anyone have Forte as a # 2?

Forte as RB2 in Round 4. He's an under-appreciated back in an offense that is starting to click with Mike Martz.

There are some awful teams this year

Agreed. They're injury-riddled on D and their offense looked anemic yesterday - 1 for 10 on 3rd down conversions, a 4th down stuff (not even close), zero double-digit play drives and an INT returned for a TD. They have so much talent but can't seem to get it together.

    Philly or San Fran?

Actually, I don't think you are overthinking at all. This is a good one. I actually like San Fran here, although, I'm sure there are many that disagree. But, Seattle has a bad QB (OK, marginal on his good days) and no Sidney Rice. I expect a low score from Seattle and turnovers as well. I think Saint Louis will be "pesky" as you say and while Philly should be great on paper, teams that have tried to build a contender purely through free agency has so far failed. I wish I could give you some match-up analysis that would clearly point to Benching the Eagles (e.g they struggle in man, STL has receivers that work well against zone, Philly d-line gap-shooting against a ZFB scheme, etc.) but I don't have them - this one is just more of a gut feel but I like San Fran better in this DST choice.
