The US Open is set to begin next week. In response, heres the usual thread to get discussion kicked off. This years tournament is at Shinnecock on Long Island.

Top Ten:

1. Justin Rose- Chalk pick I realize, but hard to ignore what the eyes see right now. That is, a guy clicking on all cylinders. Definitely the favorite in my eyes and in the eyes of many.

2. Francesco Molinari- Comes in red-hot after back to back top two finishes in Europe. Has US Open game and could be in contention in each of the years final three majors.

3. Henrik Stenson- Talk about a match made in heaven for Shinnecock. It would not surprise me one bit if Henrik wins this tourney by multiple strokes. Leads the world in par-4 scoring. Thats a big deal on a par-70 layout.

4. Rory McIlroy- Fourth straight European suggests a firm belief that the US stranglehold on majors will end on Long Island. I think one poor day on the weekend will prevent victory for Rory, but look for overall success.

5. Brooks Koepka- Finally an American and the defending champ to boot. Since returning from wrist surgery, Koepka has sizzled. Hard to defend a US Open, but Koepka is capable.

6. Patrick Cantlay- I know hes slow and annoying to watch...but hes also really good. Another top five finish would shock no one who pays attention week in and week out.

7. Dustin Johnson- Has the length to contend anywhere. Could move up with a good showing in Memphis.

8. Louis Oosthuzien- Final round at the Memorial served notice that Louis can go low anywhere. Could see him being in the mix both early and/or late in the tournament.

9. Peter Uihlein- Game trending in a very good direction and the links-style courses suit him well. Good candidate for first top ten in a major.

10. Aaron Wise- At least one sectional qualifier must always be on this list in the spirit of what the US Open stands for. Wise is enjoying a breakthrough season.

Players outside of the top ten who have a very legitimate shot at winning: Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Reed, Alex Norén, Bryson DeChambeau, Branden Grace

Players who have shown good form at times throughout the year and could again: Paul Casey, Marc Leishman, Phil Mickelson, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Satoshi Kodaira, Tony Finau, Kyle Stanley, Cameron Smith, Si Woo Kim, Emiliano Grillo

Highly ranked players who have been inconsistent or below expecations in 2018, but have the talent to win: Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Tyrell Hatton, Brian Harman, Charley Hoffman,

Darkhorses, but with plenty of game: Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Kevin Kisner, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Pat Perez,
Matthew Fitzpatrick, Gary Woodland, Daniel Berger, Ross Fisher, Haotong Li, Adam Hadwin, Alexander Levy, Brendan Steele,

Other past major winners in the field: Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel, Jimmy Walker, Jason Dufner, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott

I like your "major" threads.  I enjoy reading your commentary and usually respect your opinions.  But........ Peter Uihlein is by far the worst pick I've seen you make.  I like him and I'll root for him if he's close but he's less than 50/50 to even make the cut imo.  I like the fact that you usually throw some outliers in your top 10's but Peter Uihlein is ridiculous.

Now excuse me while a bet $100 on him at 200/1.

Shinnecock Hills - one of the 5 founding clubs of the USGA (w/St. Andrews, Chicago Golf Club, Newport and The Country Club)......... also boasts the oldest clubhouse in America.

As much as I respect SH, I will be so glad to move away from the links type setups after this year.. We've been on a run of Chambers Bay, Oakmont, Erin Hills and now SH..... In 2019 they head to Pebble, in 2020 Winged Foot (arguably my favorite US Open venue) and then in 2021 at Torrey Pines... But the greatness doesn't stop there, in 2022 (finally) a returned trip back to The Country Club in Brookline and then in 2023 they head to Los Angeles C.C.

Surely Mike Davis and his crew has learned some valuable lessons from 2004 and the debacle at SH the last time our Open was held there...... And I'm sure Phil will get the dry-heaves driving up, thinking about the infamous double bogey he made on the 71st hole.

Totally agree on the courses. We don’t need two British Open layouts every year in 2-3 of the four major championships.

Getting pretty US Open horny now.. Weather is supposed to be fantastic - no rain and a bit cool in fact. Mike Davis and his crew seem to have learned a lot from the 2004 fiasco - the course appears to be in fantastic shape.

Hopefully we see a true test of grind it out US Open play.......that crap at Erin Hills last year was an embarrassing joke. I think Shinnecock will deliver - she usually does... I don't think we'll see a Corey Pavin type winner this time around - whoever wins Sunday will be somebody who can move it out there a bit.

Given the future venues on the board, if he's ever going to win one - it prolly has to be now.

I just read that it was supposed to be in the low to mid 80s for the week. Place might get a little baked out which would make it even tougher

Said he was hoping it would firm up over the weekend. Amazing tech they have to monitor moisture levels, they have drones that can somehow take aerial moisture readings

I like Fox

They are getting better...... I do like the full onslaught extended coverage they do and I am finally starting to warm up to the theme music they play.

But Joe Buck flat out kills it for me, he's an instant golf death nail. His dumbass has no biz being in a golf booth. They also need to strengthen the rest of the broadcast team - Ziner and Strange are great, but not enuff... They also need to do a better job of giving us a live feed of the leaderboard. They will often go an hour w/out showing the full field - it's focking annoying.

Fairway width is a hot topic this year.  The average width this year is 41 yards compared to 2004 when they averaged 26 yards.  The average tour fairway width is 30-35 yards.  Heard several caddies say long hitters have a huge advantage.  Edex cuppers take note

They are saying they are slightly less wide than last year at Erin Hills - but still way too wide.

Lack of wind and too much rain was mostly the issue with the Erin Hills setup.  Though fairways being too wide was a hot topic going into last year's open as well.

I think they have it under control this year.
