Keeper League

Recommended Posts

i am in a 12 team keeper league heading into our 3rd season.

we each keep 3 players.

the topic in debate is whether off-season transactions shuld be allowed.

E.g.

I have Portis, Gates, Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald

i can only keep 3 players and we don't designate till 2 weeks bfore our draft but I'm trying to trade Fitzgerald for a draft pick.

The arguement is that he's not really my player b/c we can only keep 3 players.

But on the other hand, I drafted these guys and I should be rewarded.

Also, isn't off-season transactions all part of the game?

my suggestion would be to allow post-season trades but only 1 trade per team. that way u're not trading 2-3 players and then keeping 3...i dunno what do u think

Would appreciate any comments or feedback.

I feel that he is your player until you declare your keepers. Because at that point no other team will know who you will keep. In my keeper league all trades in the off season are allowed. We don;t have a limit but that is our league.

I don't see why there should be any problem with it. I mean, it's no different than if neither of you made the finals and executed a trade during Week 16, unless your league has a rule against transactions once you're eliminated from the playoffs...

i definitely see problems trading in the last weeks of the season, specially with a team making the playoffs..last season we stopped trading during like week 8-9

Agreed. You have a deadline, so technically he is your player to do as you please with until that deadline. I'm not sure why anyone would argue the other side of this issue. The only argument that's valid here, IMO, is whether your league wants to allow trades before the deadline is set. Since it's clear your league hasn't established a rule against trades in the offseason or specific times during the offseason, I think every team would have the right to trade who they wish until the deadline. Once the deadline comes, those players you don't keep are no longer yours.

I play in a two player keeper league, we don't have any transactions from week 9 our trade deadline until after we declare keepers, which will be july 1st. I we didn't have this rule in place I would be able to trade Ronnie Brown, Holt and Gates for draft picks for this years draft, I am keeping Portis and Edge. I would love to be able to do this but it would not be fair to the league. You need to have clear rules in place for all situations, if not that is why you have a commisioner.

I'm thinking he's your player to do with as you choose until he's a Free Agent (so to speak). If someone is smart enough to have too many good players and can trade some to stockpile draft picks, so be it. Set a limit on the # of trades, like the 1 per team suggestion, to keep balance and tell 'em to shut up about what you do with YOUR players.

I think it is unfair. It would no doubt benifit you because you would be keeping 3 players and gaining a draft pick. This would really be like keeping 4 players. Even though we all want to win I think it important to keep some sort of balance btw teams so you will not have to find replacement owners every season. If you would continue in this trend you would always have the upper hand.

3 keepers leagues. In the rules, no trades for players after week 10. Draft picks may be traded for draft picks but not players for draft picks. Like someone said, that gives you another "keeper". If it isn't in your rules then it would be harder to enforce but if it is understood that it isn't allowed then it is still a rule.

I don't think it should be allowed in keeper league, just dynasty leagues. That is different since you are not dumping most of your players. The idea behind a keeper league is to allow you to keep some good players from year to year but also keep good players in the draft. You are trying to circumvent that and enrich your team and the other team as well since their players must suck.
