Are you supposed to tip instructors?

Recommended Posts

A woman is giving us family tennis lessons

She charges $40 for the hour. I pay her in cash. Should I tip on top of that?

Yes. She's quite nice to look at. I'm guessing 34B

What if I take a private golf lesson at the resort we're going to tomorrow?

The fee is $74 for a 45 minute lesson.

Not if your wife is gonna be with you. She'll take that as a sign of you hitting on the instructor

$40 an hour is around than the average rate for a local Pro to give individual lessons for my area, I assume she is charging you that per individual and not as a family per hour, no sure why she would teach more than one person at a time.

We have 6 pros on staff and they are not allowed to accept tips, we are a municipality so that may differ a bit from the private sector but from talking with them it seems tips are not the norm when giving lessons.

yes...give her just the tip, but definitely not in front of your wife (unless she is into that)

that is a bit different has it is a single lesson and I'm sure the resort is getting a chunk of that 74 dollars.

$74 is a lot of money for a short forty five minute lesson. There's not a lot they can teach you in one lesson. They'll tell you what you're doing wrong and want you to come back for the next lesson to show you what to do right.

And no, I wouldn't tip either. And I tip for just about everything.

Thanks. My wife set it up as something we could all do together.

It has turned out to be pretty fun and educational. I never really played tennis, but used to play a lot of raquetball.

She showed me the basic swing mechanics, and now I can keep the ball in play.

She basically just puts us through basic drills for 45 minutes and then we split up to practice serving.

She does give lessons at a nearby country club, but she's teaching us independently

$74 an hour is about normal for a legit instructor, especially if you are at a resort... But I agree - you'd be better off just watching some stuff on YouTube or something for no more than 45 minutes worth of teaching. Not nearly enough time to do anything other than talk about your grip, alignment, ball position and a maybe a swing thought or two.

I got a new driver last year and have been working on shaping shots with mixed results.

I want to spend some time with a pro to work specifically on that part of my game.

The resort has some sorta USGA Academy.

See response to Bunny below. I want to zero in on some very specific instruction.

Oh ok, yea then for sure. You can definitely target a specific area and get good value out of a 45 minute lesson, for sure... I thought you were going from like a beginner - no way that would be worth it.

Someone told me you don't tip someone who owns the business. I never thought of it that way before. I used to tip the lady who cuts my hair. She raised her prices by the amount I had been tipping so I just kept paying that amount, no more tip. She owns the place.

I tip my barber every time. He's the owner and it's a one chair shop.

Make sure you get there early and hit balls before hand. Don't want to waste 15 minutes of your session warming up, will want to get right to it.

Thanks for the insight.

I always err on the side of tipping everyone.

When I lived/worked in NYC, everybody had their hand out.

Same when I traveled a lot.

Gotcha. That's definitely worth it if you know the game. I'd give my left nut to be able to draw the ball again.

The first 2 things I ask to see when somebody asks me to help them draw their driver:

* show me your grip

* show me the loft on your driver

This is the longest a tipping thread has ever gone without reservoir dogs being quoted.

It is fairly standard to tip ski instructors following a lesson, so I would assume other instructors would also qualify. But you can tip whomever you choose.

I tipped my golf instructor $5 :dunno: just really started getting back into golf. My BIL has gotten me back in it and ever since my grandpa passed away I want to play the game he loved so much.

Waiters and waitresses yes of course tip. Anyone else I only tip so the judgemental people I am with at the time wont lay a rant on me. If you get paid for the service and you pocket it, thats the tip. Dont like it? I got a tip for you then, get a dif job. Lady giving tennis lessons charges 40 for a lesson, then thats the payment right there. If she wants 10 extra, why not make the lesson 50? Christ almighty.

It would really depend on the situation and how much the club is pocketing.

Also I'm not much into tennis. Are there certified tennis instructors like golf instructors?

Is the woman giving your fammily lessons certified in any way or just knows tennis and teaches people in the side like a piano teacher?

He already said it was a private deal. No club involved. No tip needed. They are charging you a fee and he/she is profiting from the entire fee. No tip.

Shut up

I tip strippers, but that's because I'm drunk and I think she likes me for me.

I tip the guy at Home Depot for cutting my X-Mas tree. My hair stylists for rubbing her twat on my elbows. Cabbies, limo drivers, the guy at the brake tag station, door men, the guy who changes my oil, all bartenders 30% and waitresses. They guy at the casino who tends the men's room gets something. Garbage guy gets money for X-Mas.

The only people I do not tip are those on salary.

.

Yeah. I can do it, but not consistently. When I was younger and played more often, swiching betwee a draw and a fade was much easier.

Somewhere along the way, I lost that ability, and I want it back.

I played a course last week where almost every hole was set up for a draw. I was out of position all damned day.

No cert that I know of. She's a teacher and tennis coach at the high school and she runs a kids tennis camp during the summer, so I assume she knows what she's doing.
