** Round 1 & 2 Commentary - June Mock **

Recommended Posts

The "Rookie" at 1.10. Counting on at least 1/2 a season as the full-time starter, hopefully 3/4! It was him or one un-picked RB, but I went with some upside here. he may not get the TDs, which does concern me.

Was wanting D. Johnson at this pick, but my buddy Jeff took care of that for me!

Zeke scares the hell out of me. A first round pick is a BIG investment for someone who hasn't played a down in the NFL. But, if he hits, he could easily be the top RB this year.

What.... no QB with your first pick this year????????

So what have we learned? Well, I think the 11th spot might be my least favorite spot. I may reconsider after it plays out, but after 1.6, I had four players that I thought would be easy choices to start. Matt through Rob then proceeded to take all four of them . . . in order.

So, here we go, embarking into discomfort with a player I never thought I'd see on my team, had you asked me even at this time last year.

But then, I never thought I'd draft a tight end in the first round . . . til last year.

Miller was my other possible choice. New team, QB, system, but he too would have sufficed here. Again, went with the "upside" in Zeke and Dallas's O-Line!

I liked this pick. You really removed that decision from me, but I probably would have taken him for the upside one pick later. Very early, and minds may change before the season starts, but he's worth the risk. You just have to really hit on the next few rounds.

Gutsy, confident. Nice job.

1.08 RB David Johnson ARI

The way things were unfolding in the 1st I was thinking I'd be deciding between who was left of the top WRs Or Zeke. Was going to have a hard time pulling the trigger on Elliot as my #1 overall with stud WRs available so pleasantly surprised DJ fell. Would have been very happy with Julio too so after Rice picked I knew I had two good options with only Matt's ahead of me. Good start.

I think 9 is tough depending on how you feel about Zeke. If you like him, he's the pick. If you don't, you invest a VERY high pick in a TE (which still goes against every instinct I have), or start the next tier of RBs/WRs, some of whom will be there at your second rounder.

I am very high on Zeke and would have loved him at 1.12. The situation is almost too good to be true for RB in Dallas. If he had played his college ball at Penn State, then I might be a little nervous.

Exactly my feeling, though I think Gronkowski breaks the mold, especially in a mandatory TE league. It's SUCH an advantage that you spend the pick. Now, that said, this year might be tougher to be confident in that strategy. But if your choice is Gronk, Zeke, or the next WR tier . . . I think you almost have to go Gronk.

Nice turn, ICE. I predicted the Dez pick, but I wasn't sure who your second would be. I anticipated WR, but I thought you might go a different way. Jordy is tremendous, coming only with the slight question mark of rebound. But really nice pick. Didn't ease my choice, but I like Robinson's schedule and his youth. So I'll leave the other one to go shortly. :) You're welcome, robb.

Sorry dude. You knew where/when we were starting. You could have easily left a list. And you were online here a little before 9AM ET when the draft was underway. Poor form.

Sorry Matt's just frustrated from hitting F5 for five hours while on deck and double-deck.

I'm not going to hold my breathe on Freeman repeating as the number 1 RB, but the available WRs don't pop out at me, and a few of the other RBs have too many questions for my liking.

2.03 Green, WR.

With Hue Jackson gone, it may hurt his value and he lost his 2 other WRs, so this is a risk here. But, he is in the 2nd Tier of WRs and I certainly don't need another RB now.

My only fear is that I am "picking based on last year's stats", but I'll take that chance. I know Robinson is going before Green, but given the choice....I still would have taken Green. Just my 2 cents.

Thoughts

Freeman was on my mind at 4. He was the player I WS talking about in regards to the arc of his season. Much of his damage was done in one chunk midway through. That's why I went with the steady peterson

I don't see much different between taking the leap on elliot and taking d johnson

Think green is set up for a big year

Agreed. I don't have any concrete findings that tell me so but the ATL RB scenario just sets up for him to be a one-and-done with the better talent taking over there. Just my gutt.

Once Miller was off the board, I knew that I was going to go WR/WR. It was just a question of Nelson/Dez/AJ. My feeling is that the ceiling is higher for Dez & Nelson.

Fair enough. It was really only half a season but it was still something. So DJ has shown what he can do and we've seen that the ARI coaching staff has full confidence in him as a 3-down back. We all agree Zeke has the potential, but we haven't seen it yet AND no one knows how the DAL coaching will work their RBs in. They've been pretty stead fast that they won't trade any of their RBs so there's certain concern on PT for Zeke. I don't have those concerns about DJ.

You were right on cue. I could have gone AJ with little consternation; he's a mainstay on my dynasty squads. I do think, however, that his ceiling is what we've seen, especially with the departure of targets. And Robinson gets 4 games against Tenn and Indy. That trumps the division that Green will play through.

Was actually my thinking in taking Miller. I liked Robinson enough to take him in round 1 - consideration against Dez - but Miller seems much safer than Freeman, or the rest of the next tier of RBs, whereas that group of WRs is pretty similar.

David Johnson about left the building at pick # 2. Had the news on Chris Johnson not surfaced last week it was my plan..........and I feel David will be the man there.

Surprised to see more WR picked than RB so far. That would not be a surprise in a PPR league obviously, but here- it is, somewhat.

I think that is borne of the fact that most RBs are committeed now. Also, first few rounds . . . aren't you just trying to make sure that you have "safe points?"

Thanks WW for your comments!

I believe Green is the last of the Top Tier 2 WR, I see a precipitous drop after him.

I had DJ with 13% more estimated points for this League in my calculations, so I would have preferred him over Zeke.

Round One:

Again, surprised Brown went before Bell and Gurley.

Thought Hopkins went much earlier than I expected him to, given that Osweiler is still something of an unknown at QB. Would have taken Beckham over him.

Thought Beckham lasted way too long. Almost took him at 1.03.

Solid picks the rest of the round. Thought Bryant went a bit soon and Elliott is a gamble as many have said, but understandable picks both.

2.05 RB Eddy Lacy, GBP

I had Alshon penciled in for my 2nd round pick for the last few days leading up to today, but also had Lacy gone in the top 4 of the 2nd round. I'm buying his renewed committment and conditioning. He never relied on PPR to build his numbers on in the past and think he's a solid RB1 in Standard scoring with a rebound season ahead, so happy to pair him with DJ as my 1A/1B. Now we'll see what the rest of the draft brings after starting RB/RB.

I have a strange feeling I'm going to have a tough decision at the next pick and my heart is going to lead me in a direction that's going to end up liason me off the rest of the draft :D

Lacy was one of 3 backs I was debating between when I took Freeman. But I just can't trust him yet.

I hear you on Osweiler, but can't help looking at what Hopkins did with turds at QB and no run game.

Nice selection Riceman. In this format, Charles should be great! Some excellent games...and a few clunkers.

2.07 - Happy to see Charles still available at this spot. I thought he would have gone in the early 2nd round, before guys like Devonta and Lacy. But I completely understand why people, in a no-hassle league, would want to stay away from someone who has had 2 serious ACL injuries in their career already.

With that said, if Charles is back to 100% by August, he is for sure a 1st round pick in all drafts.

Thank you so much for taking charles. I thought he was going to slide and I would not have been able to pass him up and as great as he is I think I would have been less than happy with my overall WR group as a result.

2.09 Keenan Allen. On pace for over 1400 and 8 last year and playing for a contract this season. Help brought in opposited him. A player I am high on.
