So am I like one of those freaks without an SSN?

Recommended Posts

No offense Naomi.

Fam and I were at a police community outreach type thing today. Kids can climb in the swat vehicles and all that sh1t.

Anyway this old community volunteer gal comes up to us and says hey you can take your kids over there and theyll take their fingerprints and do dna swabs and stuff. Tries to make it sound real fun and all that.

Im like excuse me last?

So she changes tack and comes clean. Well if they ever go missing or (lowers voice and leans in, concerned) get abducted... then they can be identified.

Well I was not expecting to be confronted with this brave new world conundrum right then so I pretty much defaulted to my paranoid fock you, big brother! mentality. Um, no thanks, I said. And it wasnt nice. If she wasnt an old lady I probably wouldve said fock off with that sh1t you focking Nazi, which is probably why they had her as the outreach person.

But anyway, later I got to thinking. Thisll become commonplace Im sure? Then well be like the crazy reckless people that refuse to get vaccinated or something because they think its all some government conspiracy. I mean, imagine if one of the kids ever did go missing. Boy I would drive myself crazy thinking there was some potential way to identify or locate them that I was too g0ddamn pigheaded (no offense mmmbeer) to take advantage of.

And if thats your rationale, why dont just put a locator chip in em or something? Im sure thats where its headed.

And well do it all voluntarily, in the name of safety and security. Or just plain ol convenience like with Facebook and Apple.

Anyway, what are your guys thoughts? Have you done this with your kids? Would you?

Don't remember if we actually did this but I remember we had the opportunity to do so through kids little league 10 years ago. Not a new thing.

I don't wear a tinfoil hat. Think we did a picture and fingerprint. No swabbing for sure. Think one kid but not the other.

I know theyve been doing it for a while but its more sophisticated with the dna stuff now. Not that thats new either but now the technology is cheap and readily accessible.

If I had a kid, Id like to preserve his right to vanish if needed. I mean you never know, sometimes sh!t happens.

You wanna talk big brother sh!t? Here in china, I saw a video of the system they are trying to create.

Basically, you are almost always on camera. Cameras all over the streets. In the subway stations and airports and busses. They supposedly have facial recognition software good enough that they can pretty much find and track anyone through the city of ten million people. Which is pretty focking impressive considering pretty much everyone here looks somewhat similar.

Im sure it doesnt work as well as they claim. Yet.

Its gonna get like the bill burr skit. Oh man! Steve is focked! They turned off his chip man!

Depending on your kids ages its likely someone already has their DNA. They didn't give them a t-shirt? http://www.cchfreedom.org/images/help-baby.jpg

I agree though, I think it's freaky and a big part of the reason I won't do one of those 23 and me type tests.

Most states conduct newborn genetic testing on every newborn. Within 48 hours after birth, a few drops of blood from the baby’s heel are squeezed onto a special card, sent to a state lab and tested for up to 50 genetic disorders or more. While parents support newborn screening, most parents do not know it’s a state government program or that some states store and use the newborn’s bloodspots and test results without parental consent for purposes beyond newborn screening.

States that store this private genetic information the longest (as of 2016 information) include:

  • 5 to 20 years: Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia

  • 20+ years: Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington

  • Indefinitely: California, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Tennessee,

    Vermont

Hate to break it to you, but if they're collecting DNA? Its to ID the remainz.

So far, we don't do subcutaneous chipping of children. We might as well. You can put chips in shoes backpacks jackets virtually anything and a lot of parents do exactly that. That much I'd be okay with.

If it is true that states are collecting DNA and retaining it at Birth? Have a major problem with that.

And yeah, very quietly, 23andMe has already been subpoenaed successfully to obtain prosecution's. Ain't no good reason to set yourself up for that.

Getting back to collecting the kids DNA? I can't be right. The military has a DNA database but it is under strict orders to only allow that for the sole purpose of identification of remains. It is legally protected from criminal investigation even if it will prove innocence. What's the legal word for that?

Holy ! I had no idea the companies and governments were keeping samples of our DNA and selling it off to the highest bidder!

In the article that I posted below, 23andMe basically admits to put it simply that they are Facebooking our DNA.

http://www.newsweek.com/2014/08/01/whos-keeping-your-data-safe-dna-banks-261136.html

So, just one example. Let's say your kid carries and Antivirus for cancer? Some company can buy your kids DNA replicate and mass-produce that I have to buy virus and become billionaires off of your kids genetic material and you would never know.

And that's probably one of the best case scenarios here.

I always thought that was a way for the mom to find out who the dad is. :dunno:

I have not done this with my kids for the same reasons you didnt. If my kid is missing, its not going to help with finding them...just identifying them after their dead. And Id probably rather not know if they were so focked up that I couldnt identify them myself.

Im sure there are other reasons for it, but someone would need to sell me on it.

One of the main reasons is to build a massive database for identifying criminals, but they weren't pitching that.

If they are abducted, they could be alive out there somewhere, raised by someone else, or in a pizza parlor dungeon, and eventually need identification if they are rescued. If they were very young at the time of the abduction, they couldnt identify themselves.

That is, of course, astronomically unlikely.

It is far more likely that they might find it expedient to flee from the law one day, and not need their dna and prints in every database.

So far, one thing that hasn't been touched upon and is exceedingly likely, maybe even more than the criminal database is simply this. They already admit that they test for certain pre-existing genetic conditions. They already admit that they can and do sell this data to private companies. Now, if I'm Aetna or United Health? I buy that data in a fuking heart beat. Cross reference that against potential applicants and voila- blacklist.

I mean, that's not Fantasyland, that's doable right now. And if I'm CEO and I have a fiduciary duty to my shareholders to keep costs down and revenues up? That's a done fuking deal.

Again, it's really not that far from what Cambridge analytics did with Facebook data.

We hoomans constantly lose cells... makes us easier to track. Watch the movie gattaca.

If someone abducted my kid... they have to feed em... DNA on straws... cups... wrappers... etc

I was being serious and I think you were kinda being serious in your second sentence. So...

If someone abducted your kid they don't have to feed them. But lets say they do. Do you believe the police will go around testing all the straws for your kids DNA? Do you think they will go house to house sucking up dead skin looking for a match? No of course not so what's the point?

Lets say they have the technology and actively do all of that. They could just go to your house and get a DNA sample that way.

Gattaca... great movie though.

Were talking about two different things here a little bit.

I would assume the government could not do what you described above. Im sure they can and will do lots of other nefarious stuff, but not that.

Now those private dna companies, yes Im sure they totally do that. And plenty of other sh1t.

Who knows what capabilities there will be in the future, but for now its probably limited to identification purposes.

Like someone else said, the most obvious use is to identify a body. Too late at that point but at least you have an answer.

But it could be some scenario where theyre abducted very young then are released, found or escape. Very unlikely scenario but this info would be useful there.

Or you lose them in a crowd (like really lose them) or theres some mass casualty scenario and you dont survive but they do. Again all very unlikely but if you want to account for every contingency...

But really I think its to help them identify criminals. Thats how they catch some of them but right now theyre limited to people who already have their dna in the system through prior convictions etc

Well clearly, they're going to assemble a team of the finest Physicians and researchers from around the world to specifically tailor a treatment plan for each individual. Regardless of cost. I mean, that's what they do right?

So this seems prescient. A few days later they caught a serial killer with DNA from a distant distant relative that had contributed to 23andMe.

I mean yeah, this time it's a good ending. But damned if it's pretty easy to see the going sideways fast.

So now, it's not even your direct DNA. It's familial DNA. And again, the one thing I'm thinking of is insurance companies going out and buying the stuff and denying coverage to people who have certain genetic predispositions. So all of a sudden you newborn kid doesn't get insurance because she has a disposition for somewhere heart defect. I could see this smarmy bastard calling it a pre-existing condition because some third distant cousin has the same thing.

God forbid if your kid ever really is abducted, there's tons of places in your house where genetic/fingerprint info can be collected when hte time comes Their toothbrush, their hairbrush, their pillow, a favorite toy, etc.

This may be counter-intuitive as all heck but it sounds like you should have some father/daughter time. She probably won't be for the idea, so see what she would like to do; make sure she gets the picture you would just like to spend some time with her. She'll be surprised, as she knows down deep that her company sucks for you, and it'll help (maybe not immediately) reshape what that company is like

Sometimes it's when we can't stand hanging out with the people who we love that it needs to happen the most.
