Fam and I were at a police community outreach type thing today. Kids can climb in the swat vehicles and all that sh1t.

 

Anyway this old community volunteer gal comes up to us and says hey you can take your kids over there and theyll take their fingerprints and do dna swabs and stuff. Tries to make it sound real fun and all that.

So she changes tack and comes clean. Well if they ever go missing or (lowers voice and leans in, concerned) get abducted... then they can be identified.

 

Well I was not expecting to be confronted with this brave new world conundrum right then so I pretty much defaulted to my paranoid fock you, big brother! mentality. Um, no thanks, I said. And it wasnt nice. If she wasnt an old lady I probably wouldve said fock off with that sh1t you focking Nazi, which is probably why they had her as the outreach person.

 

But anyway, later I got to thinking. Thisll become commonplace Im sure? Then well be like the crazy reckless people that refuse to get vaccinated or something because they think its all some government conspiracy. I mean, imagine if one of the kids ever did go missing. Boy I would drive myself crazy thinking there was some potential way to identify or locate them that I was too g0ddamn pigheaded (no offense mmmbeer) to take advantage of.

 

And if thats your rationale, why dont just put a locator chip in em or something? Im sure thats where its headed.

 

And well do it all voluntarily, in the name of safety and security. Or just plain ol convenience like with Facebook and Apple.

If they are abducted, they could be alive out there somewhere, raised by someone else, or in a pizza parlor dungeon, and eventually need identification if they are rescued. If they were very young at the time of the abduction, they couldnt identify themselves.

They already admit that they test for certain pre-existing genetic conditions. They already admit that they can and do sell this data to private companies. Now, if I'm Aetna or United Health? I buy that data in a fuking heart beat. Cross reference that against potential applicants and voila- blacklist.

 

I mean, that's not Fantasyland, that's doable right now. And if I'm CEO and I have a fiduciary duty to my shareholders to keep costs down and revenues up? That's a done fuking deal.

 

Again, it's really not that far from what Cambridge analytics did with Facebook data.

Who knows what capabilities there will be in the future, but for now its probably limited to identification purposes.

 

Like someone else said, the most obvious use is to identify a body. Too late at that point but at least you have an answer.

 

But it could be some scenario where theyre abducted very young then are released, found or escape. Very unlikely scenario but this info would be useful there.

 

Or you lose them in a crowd (like really lose them) or theres some mass casualty scenario and you dont survive but they do. Again all very unlikely but if you want to account for every contingency...

So this seems prescient. A few days later they caught a serial killer with DNA from a distant distant relative that had contributed to 23andMe.

 

I mean yeah, this time it's a good ending. But damned if it's pretty easy to see the going sideways fast.

 

So now, it's not even your direct DNA. It's familial DNA. And again, the one thing I'm thinking of is insurance companies going out and buying the stuff and denying coverage to people who have certain genetic predispositions. So all of a sudden you newborn kid doesn't get insurance because she has a disposition for somewhere heart defect. I could see this smarmy bastard calling it a pre-existing condition because some third distant cousin has the same thing.
