supermike80 1,285 Posted June 13, 2018 Done. 30Million dollar guy. Hasn't been good for a couple years now. One of the biggest and dumbest long term contracts ever signed. Waste. The guy has never really committed to his physical health. Still on payroll for 5 more years at about 30 million per year----guaranteed. $154 million total Thanks Dumbrowski

vuduchile 1,941 Posted June 13, 2018 I don't really know much about him, but my oldest son likes him as a player. In the games and highlights I have seen, it looks like he's always having fun out there. Too bad.
ZeroTolerance 582 Posted June 13, 2018 His 2013 season is arguably the worst "what if?" for me in Detroit since Barry Sanders retired. When he tore a core muscle on the last day of August, his numbers stood at: .358/.449/.681, 43 HR, 130 RBI Not only was he threatening to repeat his Triple Crown win, but he was doing it with significantly better numbers across the board. With 27 team games remaining, he was on pace for .358/52 HR/156 RBI.

ZeroTolerance 582 Posted June 13, 2018 2024 and 2025 are 30 each but are team option, i.e. irrelevant. Baseball is just really backwards with contracts. The majority of a player's most valuable years are paid far below market value, then they make it back with contracts at the end of their careers where they are paid far more than they are worth. When the Tigers extended Cabrera, they had to pay for a guy coming off of two MVP seasons and the aforementioned Triple Crown runs. At the time I wasn't thrilled that they extended him a year early but I don't know how the dynamics of that negotiation played out. As far as being injury prone, at the time of the extension he had a grand total of 0 disabled list stints and his 148 games that season was his career low. So the Tigers were paying big bucks to a 30 year old who averaged 156 games played each year and was coming off of the following four seasons: .328/38 HR/126 RBI .344/30 HR/105 RBI .330/44 HR/139 RBI .348/44 HR/137 RBI

ZeroTolerance 582 Posted June 13, 2018 BUT BUT BUT...Why give him a contract that is guaranteed till 40 years OLD!!!! Damn Because someone will do it, so your options are get stuck with a bill for his late years when you are likely rebuilding, or let the best player your franchise has had in a half century walk. As I said before though, I wanted them to wait until the 2014 off-season.
