Media making up the news. Again. (Tony Dungy)

Recommended Posts

Couple things:

1. This is your third post in this thread whining that its not a story. You've posted almost as many times in it as anyone else.

B. If you read the thread title and the subsequent OP you'd see this thread is more of a story about how the media makes up news, takes old news (this statement was weeks old) and rehashes them out of time context, edits stories (notice the dot dot dot's in the quotes implying text was taken out), all to sensationalize things.

III. The Geek Club is a message board where we talk about current events. This "story" was the talk of sports radio today, was on the front page of Yahoo! etc. It wasn't just Keith Olberman but a grande number of others who were talking about it in the media and writing op-eds about it. Sorry if we posted about it instead of another poop thread.

4. To reiterate; This is just a prime example of how the media will take a quote, weeks old, out of context and CREATE controversy. Then the sport hot take pundits will run with it and go all "scorched earth" and try to rip somebody to shreds (in this case Dungy) just for internet clicks or help ratings. Then the sheeple lap it up with a spoon. It's not fake outrage to point this out when it happens.

I put on ESPN radio to hear the controversy on the way home and flipped over to WIP a few times when nobody was talking about Sam. It came up exactly once when a called defended Dungy and the radio host mildly disagreed. Then it turned back to NFL training camp and my 13 games under .500 baseball team.

The only outrage I'm seeing are the same FFT crybaby bedwetters upset that somebody out there might have the nerve to disagree with Dungy. Fake outrage boo hoo hoo.

I wonder if they've made a ghey pron movie about Sam yet. Inside The NFL

Not sure, but I do know they have already handed out a suspension on a coach in the NFL for gay remarks.

I have heard hardly any outrage over Dungys remarks except from listeners calling in. Some talking heads agree, some disagree but no one seems to be killing him. If anything they have been defending him saying his stance is that Sams skill and potential are not worth the headache of the issues he comes with. Where as a guy like Michael Vick, who Dungy openly helped, his talent was worth the effort.

I think I'll just stop there. ESPN, Yahoo!, Slate, NBCSports, Washington Post, USA Today, etc. all with editorials. Mike and Mike talked about it at length this morning as did all the others. I realize this is hard to defend so you want to sweep it under the rug and act as if it never happened but lets stick with reality.

You don't get it do you. :dunno:

He didn't "speak out" on a hot button issue. That's the whole point. :whoosh:

Dungy in an interview almost a month ago when asked a question said what most everybody else was saying. Then a month later a paper takes parts of the interview, edits it down to sensationalize it, and then all the pundits pile on to tear a person down over nothing. This happens all the time, in sports and especially in politics and even in simple news items. Some of us just choose to see the forest for the trees. Others, like yourself, would rather lap it up like a sheep and post 10 times in a thread they don't care about. :)

I hadn't heard about this at all until today. The fact that he said it a month ago changes it into a non story now?

Dungy said he wouldn't have drafted Sam because of the distraction right? What's the missing context here? I read his statement and clarification and skimmed a few links. His comments weren't outrageous and neither was the criticism.

The only outrage is yours. :dunno:

uhhh trending on twitter doesn't mean its backlash although twitter is full of retards so im sure there is plenty of backlash but 99% of twitter is not the media.

mike and mike and all of the ESPN radio shows talked about it today. but there was little backlash when you take into account all the analysts and not just pick and choose a handful like olbermann. I listen to most of the shows on a daily basis except lupica because I can't stand him, though i caught some of his show today. they all discussed the issue and most defended Dungy on the angle of Sams skill not being worth the hassle. In fact, the reporter who wrote the article was on Mike and Mike.

i thought your points in starting this thread were 1. media makes an issue of a non issue and 2. dungy was getting backlash over small remarks. i might have confused you with someone else within the thread.

point is, Dungy made comments regarding michael sam. a well respected and popular NFL personality made a comment about a player who is at the center of one of the larger offseason NFL news stories. I repeat, what did you expect would happen? everyone is going to talk about it....

I think you're trying to hard to push the "fake outrage about fake outrage" angle. The whole point of this thread was to point out how the media takes a non-story and sensationalizes it.

You masterfully provided your drive home from work as evidence that the only fake outrage here is on KSB's part.

KSB then provided a bunch of links to show that the fake outrage is actually on the media's part.

So that was kind of the whole point of the thread...

oh and then you said the timing of Dungy's comments don't matter.

They absolutely do matter. He made these comments right after Sam announced that he was doing the Oprah show. Sam was going to make himself a media circus and that is the exact distraction that Dungy wouldn't want to deal with.

Having skimmed his links the overall tone was "Dungy is wrong, and here's why." That is what qualifies as outrage these days?

I still don't know what context the media supposedly removed from Dungy's comments. I will put on ESPN radio again today though and maybe figure out what the big deal is.

Tony dungie meant that someone in the media would make a comment and thus make the sam thing even more of a distraction. He just didnt know it would be himself.

I dont blame the media for talking about it or bringing it up. I mean it is a sensational story in that it wasnt clear initially what Dungy's comments referred to.

Obviously its a story IF...and i stress IF......a devout religous former coach who has a history of backing other players that were major distractions....singled out Michael Sam and would NOT back him.....because he disagrees with his lifestyle.

Now i like Dungy...and i do find it intersting that he backs Tebow and Vick......but not Sam...because HE would be a distraction.....huh? what?

BUT....Dungy has clarified his remarks..and we can move on.

I blame media who jumped Dungy and just assumed thats why he didnt want Sam and ran with it. Thats just lazy journalism for clicks.

I blame everyone.

The media picks out something small (often times taken out of context) and puts it out there knowing what the reaction will be.

And the reaction will be a huge overreaction to it, and get everyone talking and flooding places like this and calling talk radio shows and so on.

It drives their ratings and so on.

Why is everyone so certain that Micheal Sam will not make it in the NFL?

Im not certain.

He very well could.

I don't think he will make it with the Rams based on the talent they have on the D line.

Ehh....pretty undersized guy, folks who know how to break down technique say his is not very good for the NFL level, and the Rams have a lot of D-lineman.

He might....but its far from a lock.

The NFL hall of fame is full of players who were given no chance to make it. Bottom line: people don't know , including pros that spent their whole life in the in football. Look at the expert picks on who is going to win a game. Lots of analyst with Super Bowl rings struggle to be right half the time. I hope Sam does fine.

On the other hand, if Dungy indicated that taking a 7th round player with the baggage is not worth the trouble; I can see his point. Didn't Sam want to sign up with Oprah for a reality show about training camp right out of the gate?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/16/michael-sam-reality-show-on-hold/

Do you think the Rams would have signed him if they knew he was going to try that ? I doubt it. Did that action of trying to bring Oprah in hurt the next openly gay player trying to get drafted. I am going to say yes.

I listen to ESPN radio and WIP on my commute home every night. That's 30 minutes during the nightly rush so maybe I missed it but I didn't know anything about this story until I read about it here and heard almost nothing on the radio yesterday. Also heard nothing this AM.

Sometimes I think you guys have a massive persecution complex that makes it seem like this is a major issue when it really isn't. :dunno:

Then why is it "ironic" that you weren't up on a sports-related current event? I think the word you meant was "expected"? Maybe "predictably uninformed"? :dunno:

It's ironic because KSB was spreading the very story he claimed the mainstream media was unnecessarily disseminating. Whatever, just thought it was kind of funny.

BTW I do check ESPN.com frequently and have seen very little on this story.

I don't have a complex. In fact I haven't commented on the underlying topic yet. I happen to suspect Dungy's religion contributed to his comment.

I was merely pointing out that I am incredulous at the thought of any extended exposure to sports media without hearing this topic.

To listen to KSB this is all over the news media with outraged people demanding Dungy's firing etc.

What little I've read about it includes about half in support and half against, with Dungy's critics mostly saying his comments were hypocritical in light of his previous support for Vick.

That's outrage?

I'm actually sensing a little rebellion from the ex-athletes on sports radio, who are using Dungy's comments as a platform to say they wouldn't be comfortable with the "distraction" in the locker room.
