Kanye west is so far from a musical genius its a joke. He IS a genius when it comes to marketing. But as far as music goes he is a giant pile of ###### when compared to those with actual musical genius. I would say he needs to hang around Pharrell but really would not want Kanyes shittty attitude to wear off on him.

Like any Jay-Z songs? Kanye actually produced some of his more mainstream hits. In fact, both him and Pharrell were producers first... so they actually have a lot in common. You can hate him for his personality, but to say he doesn't have talent is WAY off base.

Okay, this may officially tell my age but as a person who group up in the late 80's and 90's when hip hop was really in full bloom and coming to its own, I've come to the realization that hip hop / rap is a young persons music. Even the African Americans I hang out with my age barely even listen to it anymore. They do some, but they've branched out into more sophisticated genre's like Jazz or Blues.

 

I liked rap back in the day. Biggie, Tu-Pac, A Tribe Called Quest. Had all the albums, it was popular and fun. Hell even to this day I could probably lip sync rap half of the songs from those albums. But hearing it today, its stupid. It's for kids who just don't know any better. Sure it takes 'talent' to be good rapper and to have an ear of how to put beats together, but its just not the same as playing your own instrument and layering notes and creating a song with meaning, from scratch. Add that with 90% of what rap songs are about which is bitches, money, crime or self aggrandizing (all Kanye does). Its childs play. I literally laugh out loud when I see 30+ year old white dudes pumping rap music out their ride. Sort of the same when I see 30+ year old dudes at a Star Wars convention.

 

Maybe I'm just getting old. Maybe I'm right. I'm thinking.... its both.

I wouldn't call him highly skilled in terms of singing/rapping, but he is elite in terms of producing amazing music and writing amazing lyrics......If you pay attention, there is a lot of self deprecation, confession that he sucks, depth, and humor in his lyrics. But to know that would require a bit of effort beyond reacting to a headline on MSN, so I don't expect most here to ever consider the thought.

 

Just know that critics (people that may know more about modern music than Sux), continually believe his albums to be amazing.

So 6 of his 7 albums are considered universally acclaimed. I wonder if anyone else rates so highly. By comparison, this boards beloved Van Halen has only one album on their and it got a 73. Worse than Kanye's worst. Genius. I won this thread.
