Why do Teams use Running Backs to return Kickoffs?

Ever hear of Brian Mitchell? He's the NFL's all time leader in return yardage and he was always the 3rd or 4th string RB for the Redskins. Returning kicks or punts is not just about speed, it is a position that has it's own skill set: vision, ball security, agility, decision making, and yes speed. Darn, somebody already beat me to it.

What draft position won your league last year?

I won it from the 3rd spot. Alexander, Portis, LJ, Bears D, and a preseason trade for Steve Smith. It was a beautiful year! Sadly we've expanded to a couple more owners this year (I commish) and there are no keepers this year.

    TD Only League

I'm joining an 8 man TD only league with some people I work with. I've never done a TD only league before. I've drawn the 6th slot. All TDs are 6 points 1 QB 2 RB 3 WR 1TE Def K. I'm contemplating taking Peyton at the 6th spot, something I'd never do in any of my other leagues, and taking a RB like Brown or Caddy at 11 spot. Am I crazy? Do QBs have more value in TD only leagues? Could somebody please post a overall top 20 for TD only leagues?

    Mark Clayton, WR Ravens

I think it's too soon to consider him #3 fantasy WR. He's the 3rd receiving option on a run first team that now has two !,000 yard power backs. McNair has never lit it up yardage/completion wise and he has a raport with Mason and has a very good TE in Heap, and he does love going to his TEs. That being said an 11th or 12th round pick would be a good investment if Heap or Mason go down, or so you can keep him on the cheap next year because I expect him to pass Mason by then.

A homer's warning about the SF backfield

Frank Gore has more talent in the whiskers he scrapes off his chin every morning than Kevin Barlow has in his entire body. Unfortunately, he has the glass constitution of Samuel L. Jackson's character in Unbreakable. Barlow couldn't even beat out a 30 something Garrison Hearst who missed two whole seasons with a knee injury. I'm shocked to find out that Barlow's best season (he still couldn't beat out a 32/33 yr old Hearst) was when he had a top 5 or 6 QB and the best WR in the league....one would hope so. Gore out performed Barlow hands down last year and he's only going to get better. I much rather take a latter round (say 8th or 9th) flier on Gore and stash him on my roster till he becomes the starter, than draft Barlow and watch him get 3.4 ypc.

Mike Bell - Denver Broncos RB

For the love of god people, it's Tatum Bell. You can't call him your "ultimate sleeper" if you don't even know his name.

    Portis vs. Jordan

    BEST POST EVER!
  8. superskin#99

    Point Per Reception

Last year (my first commishing) I did 1 PPR, but 1 point for every 15 receiving yards. I wanted to make WR more of a factor. I like to create more than one way to win, to allow for different drafting strategies. In the ESPN leagues, roughly 50% of the winners had either LJ or SA. Why should the person who got lucky with a top 3 pick (granted LJ wasn't top 3 last year) have such a decided advantage merely becasue of luck of the draw. This year I'm doing .5 PPR and 1pt/10 yards to prevent those 7 point days for 6 rec 18 yard stat lines.

    Portis vs. Jordan

I see this comment all the time, it drives me nuts. Do people not realize that Gibbs is a run first coach?? When he had The Posse (Monk, Clark, Sanders) they were still a rush first team. I don't feel like looking up the stats - I've seen them before and this stuff should be common football knowledge anyways - but Gibbs' teams are traditionally top 10 rushing units. I also don't buy the argument that with Saunders calling plays he'll pass more, the Chiefs ran the ball over 500 times last year. Saunders does like to get the RB more involved in the passing game, look for 40-50 rec by Portis this year. Conversely, with the more mobile Brooks, I would expect Jordan's catches to decrease because Brooks can avoid a rush and not have to dump it to Jordan as often. P.S. Looking at some of the other posts I see someone did take the time to do some research. Strong work!!

    Who to keep at TE?

Speaking as Redskin fan, I think Witten is the better keeper based on production only. The Skins added Lloyd and Randle El which will hurt Cooley the most, not Moss. Moss will see less of the triangle coverage he was getting last year. With the athleticism of Lloyd look for more redzone looks to the WRs than last year. Remember Sellers (who was the 3rd TE/ part time FB last year) caught 7 TD passes in the redzone. This year he is the fulltime FB and will be on the field more. Yes Saunders likes to use the TE (see Gonzalez) but Cooley is no Tony and the Chiefs didn't have nearly the talent at WR that the Skins do this year. I think Cooley's catches will drop by 20-25 this year. I'm thinking 50 catches and 4TD, not exactly keeper material.

    drafting from the 12 spot

It really depends on your lineup requirements. The league I commish uses standard scoring + .5 PPR and the lineup is QB RB RB/WR WR TE WR/TE DEF K 8 Bench. QB Green 7.12 RB Caddy 1.12 RB/WR Horn 5.12 WR C. Johnson 2.1 WR/TE Sant. Moss 3.12 TE Heap 6.1 DEF Seahawks 10.1 K Longwell 16.1 Bench Addai 4.1 Bench Evans 8.1 Bench C. Perry 9.12 Bench Michael Clayton 11.12 Bench Volek 12.1 Bench Watson 13.12 Bench Betts 14.1 Bench Redskins 15.12 Heap was a big mistake at 6. I should've taken Gore and still gotten Crumpler at 7 or 8 and I would've been able to snag a better backup QB with my 9.12. If you don't have to start 2 RBs, then I think it's better to go RB, WR with your first two picks if your drafting 12th.

who do you like at #4 or #5?

Porits should be a lock at #4. If I had the 3rd pick (now don't all gang up on me) I would take him over LT. Call it a hunch, call me a 'Skins homer, but I think he'll be a top 3 back this year. He had a great run over the last 8 games of the season. What was even more impressive about it was that he was doing it against 8 and 9 man fronts. Because of injuries and ineffectiveness the 'Skins were using a lot of 1 WR sets. James Thrash was the #2 WR for christ sakes. Now they'll be able to spread the field and Saunders is a brilliant play caller and game planner. We all know what Priest and LJ did, and they didn't even have any WR depth. He also likes to throw to the RB, I expect Portis to catch 40-50 balls this year. I'm also a little wary of LT's 400 touches for the last 5 years...he's tough, but I just wonder if he's due for an injury. The only thing Poris did in Denver was to occasionally wear a championship belt on the sidelines.

    I don't like LJ with the 1st pick ...

The offensive system is not changing in KC. Last years offensive line coach is taking over as OC. Of course, the question is if he can be an effective game planner and play caller like Saunders. Priest's return is a non-issue. Edwards has said he wants to run more, around 550 rushes this season. Barring injury LJ well get 300+ carries.

    Keep 2 0f 3

I have to pick two out of LJ, Portis, and S. Smith. My league is expanding from 8 teams to 12 this season. After keepers are picked there will be a two round, four team expansion draft so whoever is left will not be available. Standard scoring plus .5 ppr.
