I tried watching the Pacific when it aired, but had a difficult time getting into it.

I tend to be more interested in wwII Europe.

I have not seen the pacific yet.... is it as good?

It's good, not as good as B O B. But it does give you an appreciation of how tough the pacific theatre was vs Europe. The problem is that unlike B O B, there is so much fighting and artillery throughout you kinda get sick of hearing it. The last episode is a tear jerker.

The character development sucked. By the end of it, I still didn't know who was who.

I actually just watched the movie "Fury" the other day for the first time. I had never even heard of it, but really glad I gave it a go. I thought it was really good. What did you guys think of it?

i was not a huge fan of it. I liked that they provided a different perspective than most recent WWII films, but it seemed fairly predictable and manufactured.

I thought the Pacific was very good but not as entertaining as BOB. BOB followed the same group of guys from training through to the end. The Pacific jumped around a little more.

I'm a WW 2 nut and I am into both the Pacific and the European theaters. My dad fought in the Pacific and he saw some serious combat and IMO for American troops, there was a lot more brutality in the Pacific theater. The Germans were top troops and better fighters than the Japanese but the Japs were fanatical and I think American troops hated them more than the Germans and maybe had an easier time dehumanizing the japs than the huns. The Germans committed more atrocious war crimes than the Japs but those war crimes were mostly against Jews and Russians. The Japs meanwhile started the war out with the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and the Bataan death march which stung Americans directly.

I've read a lot of stuff that was not talked about during WW2, things like American troops using Jap skulls as ash trays and not taking any Jap prisoners (Japs were not apt to surrender much anyways). I think the Pacific Theater may have seen more of a pyschological transformation of the American troops who not only were facing a more fanatical enemy than the Troops in Europe but were battling the jungle environment. And I think the HBO series tried to get into the minds of some of these characters. Like BOB, the series was based on real people. A few of the guys in the Pacific kept detailed diary's of their time in the war. So the Pacific series got a little bogged down by trying to get into the minds of specific characters. Both shows are worth watching.

Wow, talk about powerful stuff. If you make it thru with dry eyes, you're tougher than me.

I can't see how you think the Germans commited more atrocious war crimes than the Japanese. The Germans were kind in comparison.

I try to watch BoB once a year. I think it's the greatest series ever made and I think every American should watch it.

I was very excited for The Pacific when it came out. I enjoyed it but it just didn't live up to BoB. I thought it focused too much on certain characters and what they were thinking. I want more of the battles and what was going on. Still worth watching though.

BoB is excellent. Stands the rest of time. Ive seen it twice but its been years. Time for a rewatch one weekend

And piggybacking off what HT said (military folks know about that piggybacking  ) Japanese were completely horrible for the things they did. Especially to POWs.

I was never aware of the disdain the men of the 101st had for the notion that Patton "rescued" them in Bastogne..... Those guys were true warriors, I can see their point.

Greatest line from BoB?

"We’re paratroopers, Lieutenant. We’re supposed to be surrounded."

If you ever make it down to New Orleans, a must is the WW 2 museum. The They added the Pacific conflict a few years ago to the D-Day invasion. Beyond amazing if you are a history/war buff. Hanks and company did a phenomenal job.

My dad was a WWII veteran. He was Army special forces and part of his training was going to be Airborne alpine training for winter jumping in Europe. He got transferred to a support unit attached to the 101 Airborne upon their arrival in Bavaria before that training ended, He never would answer me when I asked him about his service, but I met two of his old unit members at his funeral and they told me was sent there as a Marksman thinking there were high ranking German soldiers hidden about or still in control of some alpine strongholds. The one thing my dad did say was that the 101 Airborne were the best soldiers we had.

He would probably have not watched BOB. too close to home for him, but he loved the movie Patton.

I find that whole Bavaria situation very interesting. God bless your Dad. The best.
