In the Land of Rumors...

...this one rocks! :D

Supposedly, the Raiders (his hometown team) are trying to coax Marshawn out of retirement to play for them this season.

We heard something vague along these lines last year - and, of course, nothing came of it. For some reason though (I dunno why...really wishful thinking?), the story seems to have a bit more substance this time around.

At any rate, read...perchance, to dream:

As the reports states, the Seahawks still have the rights to Lynch so he would have to be traded or released.

I think it would be a good fit for the Raiders... he's got less mileage than Adrian Peterson... 265 fewer touches.

That's assuming he has kept anywhere near football shape.

Is there any precedent for a running back coming back and having success comparable to Lynchs age?

Tim Hightower was out of football for quite some time. While he wasn't hugely relevant from a fantasy sense, I think that's arguably one of the best comparisons

Further reports suggest Lynch asked for his release from the Seahawks on Thursday...

This is interesting in the sense that...

If Lynch is in fact serious about returning to the NFL, he can effectively force the Seahawks's hand by simply applying for reinstatement no?

Don't see him being able to be the player he was if he indeed was to return.

Someone said the best comparison is T Hightower.

Age wise I would agree.

But Hightower left the game with 523 rushing att and Lynch left the game with 2145 rushing att.

I don't see him being able to come back at age 30 and to be a big factor.

Here is another article from earlier today with a bit more information about the story/rumor, from a Seattle beat writer with a reputation for being factual:

http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/reports-raiders-strongly-considering-pursuing-retired-seahawk-marshawn-lynch/

...along with a couple of thoughts from others:

Bill BarnwellVerified account @billbarnwell

The Raiders waiting for the Seahawks to sign Eddie Lacy before leaking their interest in Marshawn Lynch is excellent trolling.

Danny KellyVerified account @DannyBKelly

Lynch behind that Raiders line would be a blast. Let's do this.

mike freemanVerified account @mikefreemanNFL

Marshawn going to the Raiders would be the greatest moment in the history of humankind.

Raiders finally getting the ship heading in the right direction, why take unnecessary chances spending money for old players.

The Raiders got the 26th pick in round 7. It''s their last one, number 247. I'd take that straight up for Lynch.

Wish him the best of luck, tell him someday he'll be in the Seahawks Ring Of Honor. And if the stars align, and we ever met in the superbowl, please don't run one in on us.

God damn R. We need to get some front office poitions.

I'd most likely put Paul Allen out of business and destroy the franchise. But dammit, this deal would be done!

What's Oaklands cap room like?

Depends on what BM wants. And whether we extend Carr this season or next. Definitely doable.

Came across an interesting take from Mike Tanier, to read while we're waiting and hoping to hear any possible updates on the Marshawn Lynch situation.

Long ago, in the "before time," when Colin Kaepernick was just another starting quarterback and every detail of American life didn’t carry massive sociopolitical implications, Marshawn Lynch defied the NFL with the loudest silent protest in modern sports history...

I've been trying to ignore this story until/unless there was some definitive, actual news about the situation.

Well...there still isn't, exactly. However, rumors and snippets of information do seem to be solidifying in a generally positive direction, and it's kind of interesting to read the perspective of two different camps.

Man. It will be so damn cool if this happens. Make it so!

Apparently, It Has Begun: http://www.fieldgulls.com/2017/4/13/15286238/seattle-seahawks-marshawn-lynch-applies-for-reinstatement?utm_campaign=fieldgulls&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

...When Roger Goodell approves Lynch’s reinstatement—and there’s no reason why he wouldn’t (Lynch’s fines are a huge source of revenue for the league)—the veteran’s approximately $9 million contract for 2017 will immediately count against Seattle’s salary cap, intensifying the pressure for John Schneider to trade or release Beast Mode before the NFL Draft in two weeks.

it would be good to see him go there and he will have a full pre season to test what he has left if he makes it to the team then the raiders are happy with what they seen.

also if he explodes back to form great we puts up good numbers and dose a good job if he doesn't am sure the raiders don't mind having a big powerful back for 1 or 2 yards on 3rd downs or goal line work. I mean regardless if he has lost a step or speed etc he is an experienced back with a lot of power and a good oline in front of him he would be a perfect 3rd down back and it will keep any young rb the raiders draft from getting hammered on short 3rd downs so they are fresh for play offs if they make it.

I don't see a 31 year old Rb that retired coming back and being what he once was.

I'm truly going to pass on him.

And pray that others give him a very high ranking.

Hide and watch, then. :)

He should be a good RB2 - especially after a year of rest, which he has not spent sitting on his arse getting fat and lazy.

I truly do pray that he has a Rb2 value.

Even more of a benefit for me.

I will happily pass on him, to high of a risk from a player that will be 31 yrs old and has a lot of mileage on his legs.

To Rich for me, if I can get him as a rb3 I would buy.

I read where some of the so called experts are even calling him a good rb1.

Ohhh... here's a more indepth link, explaining that Lynch does not have to apply for reinstatement if he's traded:

http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-insider-blog/article144389559.html

...Instead, Rapoport also reported a trade would keep Lynch -- who isn’t exactly a form-following, dot-his-Is-and-cross-his-Ts kind of guy -- from even having to file reinstatement paperwork with the league. Rapoport reported a trade between a team holding a retired player's contract rights and another team absolves the player from having to formally apply to the league for reinstatement. In that case the retired player automatically gets reinstated with the new team by virtue of the trade.

I don't think anyone is taking on that one year salary, which probably means he won't be traded before he signs the papers.

How long does a player have to come back? Kind of odd if a player has a lot of guaranteed money, retires, then wants to come back years later when he may not be as effective. I wonder how easy it is for a team to say We gave that contract to him for these years, he is older than we would like, we shouldn't have to pay the guaranteed money

'Years later'? He sat out one season.

Breaking news, meanwhile: This afternoon, Marshawn has agreed to terms with the Raiders and the Seattle trade is pending.

Years were used as a random example of asking how long it's ok for a player to sit out to nullify the money they can collect.

Now MikeRob is saying it (the agreement) hasn't happened yet, and Marshawn just posted this (rare) comment:

Certainly by most league's draft we'll have a better idea how he'll hold up. By then Lynch will have participated in training camp and the exhibition season. I'm worried about the abdominal surgery he underwent in 2015, though in all fairness we're talking 18 months. If he's kept himself in shape that will minimize the hamstring-type nagging stuff. He's had some back issues.

Bottom line, he is really motivated to do this (play in Oakland.) It's a special situation for the team, and can't really be compared to the stupid shite we've pulled, dragging guys out for a final year or two. Though in all fairness Jerry Rice worked out well. Behind our line, with a veteran MVP level QB that has dangerous weapons outside, absolutely there is RB2 potential there. Especially considering Lynch's expertise in pass blocking and receiving. It's all riding on his health, of which we'll have a solid gage by the time most leagues draft.

One last thing. The Raiders may very well still draft an RB, especially once they get into rounds 4-5 (James Connor.) In fact, if the right guy falls to them in either round two (Mixon) or round three (D'Onta Foreman) they could pull the trigger earlier. It is still a position of future need, and they may be wanting to hedge bets in case of nagging injuries to Lynch.

Raiders do have a good Oline.

And he might just surprise me and indeed become a sold rb2.

But I'm going to wait and pass on him if I have to pay that much.

I like him more as a rb3, or lower.

But we will see what happens.

The move for the Raiders I think is a good one, if I was the team I would do the same thing.

Good for Seattle too. Free up 4.5 mil, and get a extra draft pick. ( I just assume that's what the deal would be, a late round pick.)

well, if there wasnt a team willing to sign him, the Seahawks would be forced to release him for cap reasons.

I think he's a reasonable RB2, but given his age and the abdominal surgery he had, I think it would be unwise to draft him as a RB1.

He may give that kind of production in the first couple of games, but I have my doubts whether he'd be able to keep it up for a full season.

If you could get him as a middling to low end RB2, I'd hold him for about 3 or 4 games, and if he blows the doors off early, and someone offers you RB1 value, then you unload.

I do think (for the raiders sake) that Oakland needs to draft a RB in this draft. It's a reasonably deep draft for RB and the beast is likely only a 1 year starter in Oakland. Maybe that was the plan all along. But a young kid could learn running behind a guy like Lynch for a year before becoming a starter.

If he doesn't play any football, he costs us 4.5 mil. If he comes back, he costs us 13 mil. Either way the guy won't have another carry for us the rest of his life.

I'll take the money off our books, and a late pick, all day every day. Best of luck in your future endeavors. Thanks for the memories.

Disagree Ray.

I don't think he is worthy of a rb2 ranking.

Rb3 or lower is where I see it.

And there is no way I would draft a rb2 thinking that he might hold up for three or four games, that's to much to spend.

I see it exactly the same way you do, and for that reason I see him a rb3 or lower.
