Kids...phones...social media...threats...parent responsibility

Recommended Posts

Not that this hasn't been said a lot on here...but watch what your kids are sending and receiving.

Inform school officials of anything inappapriate from others and consider not even letting them on some of those platforms.

There have been 12 expulsions (well, 11...but will be 12 after this last one goes through due processs) in the last 2 years at my son's middle school. 10 of those 12...the evidence to expel came from some sort of messaging or social media. Mostly bullying stuff...or other types of inappropriate messages...until Friday when it was due to a threat on the school.

At some point in January they received an anonymous call. Vague info about a student hearing from another student that someone was planning something agaisnt the school. Only gave grade, gender, and first letter of the "suspect". School managed to narrow it down to the one kid...call this kid Student X. School has an armed resource officer (all Middle and High Schools do in our district). Between district officials, school admin, and resource officer...a plan is set forth to talk to the student who isn't at school on the day in question. Next step was for authorities to perform a home wellness visit. I believe it was a police officer that went to Student X's home and spoke with the student and parent (s). At that point...no evidence of any threat was found.

I believe there was one more call within a few days of this...this with even less information.

At some point in the last week (and the students that come forward said it was because of the Florida shooting that they did)...a student (Student A) comes forward and said they have seen messages by Student X about police and a threat. Says Student B may have the messages. Student B states they saw something on instagram and its checked (it ends up only being a message from Student X posted that the cops came to the house in January). No other messages or info at this time.

At some point Friday morning...I can't recall if it was another student or Student B coming forward saying they think there was more, but they don't have their phone there. In the process of reaching a parent to retrieve the phone...Student A comes forward saying they have more messages (screen shots even of older messages). Messages dating back to October 2017 are found wherein Student X made a threat that was to happen in May.

Within 5 minutes, Student X was removed from class by administration and the resource officer. Multiple levels of law enforcement, and district admin are contacted. Within 30 minutes the district threat assessment team is at the school. Student X and locker are searched as well as other areas. No weapon found. Within 2 hours, student X is removed from campus by police.

Lots of changes coming to the school...and talks about social media...about coming forward no matter if you think the threat is real or a joke...coming forward with bullying with anything. Trying to remove the connotation that being a "snitch" is a bad thing...telling the truth is seen as a bad thing.

Scary stuff....and thankful that it was handled the way it was by the school with what info they had. Thankful that after first dropping the ball a bit...Student A came forward with information.

I dont see why a kid needs a phone at school, they should be checked in upon arrival and checked out when leaving school

I dont know how society functioned before cell phones honestly

The threat wasnt made during school hours. Kids have their phones at school for any number of reasons (after school activities and so on).

They are strict on use during school hours (not allowed and they take them immediately if a kids takes out a phone).

Each instance was posted when the kid wasnt at school.

My older daughter was suspended from HS for cyber bullying. She basically forwarded some other comment on Instachat or whatever, but she had had some run-ins with this girl so she was on double secret probation. Plus she lied to me so I was caught off-guard by the vice principal when he told me what happened, so I told him to lock her up and throw away the key... as long as it didn't go on her permanent record or impact her college applications, which it didn't. It was a lesson I'm glad she learned with no permanent ramifications.

I don't get this either!! Everyone acts like it's not enforceable. If a student is caught on phone during class, punishment. End of story

That was like reading a Naomi post but with code names

I know right?! I was tempted to post a TL;DR but I figured I'd just post my own slightly relevant story. :dunno:

Armed officers at my school in the 1970s - 1980s - zero

Threats against my school in the 1970s - 1980s - zero

Expelled kids at my school in the 1970s - 1980s. Maybe 1 in a decade or so.

Students that dropped out...quite a few....they actually ended up getting jobs, unlike today where they go back and shoot people.

Do something stupid, get taken out in the hallway and taught a lesson.

Mouth off, get taught a big lesson.

Bullying? Ends up in a student vs student fight at worst. Best fight ever was 2 guys going at it and Mr Myers winning. He threw one of them down a flight of stairs. It's actually legendary at my school. When asked who won that fight, the standard answer was Mr Myers.

Simply more proof that the low IQ losers are now producing more dumbasses and nothing to stop it. They can't even teach these fucktards a lesson in school. It's only going to get worse.

At my kids school they had a porn ring going. Like 8 kids suspended having nudes of girls in the school and then threatening to show their parents unless they send them more. Some pretty twisted shiit if you ask me. One kid had over 1000 photos of all kinda age girls and was passing them around thru video game consoles. Its all under investigation. All quiet in the papers tho.

Damn, this kind of stuff makes me sad we didn’t have the tech when I was in HS. Would have loved that.

You have never heard of them? They are a thing.

They shouldn't be in a high school.

Why not? Most people who lift weights do it wrong. For high schools with high end athletic programs its a reasonable thing to have.

No it isn't. It's a waste of tax payers money. The athletes can pay for it themselves if they want it.

Serious football programs bring in enough revenue to cover the cost, I'm sure

It's very possible. Many states including mine (AZ) have "out of boundary exceptions" where kids can go to schools outside of their location. It is often used to attend a school which excels in a relevant sport. :dunno:

What does that have to do with revenue?

Our schools get funding based on headcount, so programs which get more kids to attend add revenue for the school. More importantly, programs which get top athletes to attend get seats in the stands which buy tickets and concessions and get donors which add revenue.

Ridiculous. And even though being good might put people in the stands and off set the cost some, the tax payer is still footing the bill and a weight lifting coach is a bit much. The gym teacher can't learn how to do it?

To be clear, I don't think our schools have dedicated weightlifting coaches. But my point was that it wouldn't surprise me since they get funded on headcount and they get additional revenue from butts in the seats. :dunno:

And the tax payer pays for that increased head count, right? The money was getting laid out wherever the kid went. That in itself is ridiculous, but whatever.

I don't understand your point. The taxpayer pays for nothing different. :dunno:

I would assume the weight lifting coach also teaches gym. At my high school, all the athletic coaches taught the gym and health classes.

One of my very closest friends in High School made a sex tape of himself and his girlfriend. He labeled it "Grease Pit'. He never showed us but somehow another of my closest friends got ahold of it and made copies of Grease Pit to distribute to seemingly damn near everybody. These were two of the three guys I'd walk back and forth to school every day with and we all played Dungeons and Dragons together.

No parents or school admins ever found out. She was livid and broke up with him over it though. IT shattered the D&D group too as they'd not speak to each other for months.

I turn my cell off for days, yet I still am able to function in society. :dunno:

We had one payphone for 2,500 students at my high school. I dont think I ever used it once.

I had a beeper for a while as a teen. Didnt get my first cell phone until junior year of college.

Oh for sure, it’s a thing. High school football is huge business in some places. Ever see varsity blues? The whole “football is life” mentality in those states and all.

I know, but I find it hard to believe they are turning a profit or fully funding themselves no matter how much they fill the stands or sell popcorn. Football is expensive.

My son's school has a strong football program. Probably a budget of nearly a million a year. Maybe more. The money doesn't come from popcorn. A few wealthy alumni foot the bill.

Yep. HS sports programs arent typically self supporting. Boosters pay for all the luxuries.

I know for a fact that they can reconditioned phones to only dial say, nine-one-one and other things. Seems to me, there has to be phones out there where you can limit it to how many calls you can make and to whom. Just strip down, bare bones. That seems to be a better solution.

A phone has nothing to do with calling, they never use it for that. It's all about the apps.
