BLS 313 Posted March 15, 2018 So most of you know I'm a firearms instructor. No secret. I've also been an ALICE instructor for a couple years now. (Active Shooter Response) After what happened in Florida, I said enough is enough. I rented a room at a large local casino ($300), paid for water ($1.50 a bottle) and coffee ($21/gallon...yes, it's ridiculous), ran facebook promotions for $250, a newspaper ad for $400 and ran flyers all around the area for a FREE SEMINAR ON ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING. This was yesterday. I took a day off work to do it even. The goal was to teach what needs to be done to prepare schools, churches and businesses on what they can do to help. But I did obviously also try to promote that we will come in and teach this to your school, etc. For a very reasonable fee, I might add. And for some places, at no charge (which we've done in the past). I had over 30,000 people click the event on facebook. Numerous phone calls, emails, people who signed up, clicked 'Interested' on facebook. And why wouldn't they....it was FREE....zero charge to come in and listen to a certified instructor give a presentation on how to protect your place from an active shooter. The room seated 100 people, and we held two, 2-hour sessions. 57 people showed up between the two courses. Not 457, or even 157. 57. You wanna know why schools keep getting shot up? Because it's too much work apparently to get some training done. Unfuckingbelievable.

wiffleball 4,631 Posted March 15, 2018 1. I guess that was a nice gesture. Though, obviously a little bit of promotional work for your business as well. Nothing wrong with that. 2. If somebody came to me and said well hey the reason your workplace keeps getting shot up is because you refuse to learn how to respond to the shooter! I tell him to go himself. I should be able to go to work with the expectation that I'm going to do what I went to college to do and what I have 20 years experience doing. Now, if I'm reading tax code in the middle of mosul, yeah that's a different story. 3. In short, not my job description. And, if that's going to be the case? If I have to take responsibility for my own personal security Everywhere I Go? Then give me my property tax money back and fire all these boneheaded up cops who take money from me for stupid like license plates and parking violations. Today's cops have turned into nothing more than God damn Revenue Agency anyway. Too cowardly to be actual cops, but bad asses all hell if the sticker on your license plate has expired. parrot 789 Posted March 15, 2018 You wanna know why schools keep getting shot up? Because it's too much work apparently to get some training done. Is this active shooter response training, or active shooter prevention training? Because if I'm responding to an active shooter, isn't my school... workplace... whatever... already getting shot up, pretty much by definition?

BLS 313 Posted March 15, 2018 Most people are probably not that worried about an active shooter. Apparently. However it was geared towards school superintendents, church staff and business owners and management. I guess they don't get it. In 2002 there were 5 Active Shooter events in the US. In 2012 there were 29.

BLS 313 Posted March 15, 2018 So, what are we supposed to do in an active shooter situation? Obviously, contacting 911 must be done. Flee if you can, but there are tips and things to avoid in the process. Avoiding fatal funnels, etc. If you can't flee, you must barricade your room and you CANNOT allow anyone to come in, once the door is locked. The risk is too great. We teach barricading techniques with common equipment found in rooms, show them how to produce door barricades or where to purchase premanufactured ones. If the shooter breaches the barricade, you must disorient and distract with a group attack and disarm the attacker. Prevention methods go into social media reviewing, hardening of facilities, creating a response team, etc. Mitigation goes into building them a trauma kit for each room along with triage and field trauma training (tourniquets, israeli bandages and wound packing).

Our boys came home laughing last week. They are advised to throw books and stab the intruder with pencils if the baracade is broken. I'm not saying it's funny, but really? What else are you going to do as a student if an armed person breaks through the barricade?
penultimatestraw 473 Posted March 15, 2018 I think most people realize encountering an active shooter is extraordinarily unlikely, kinda like being the victim of a terrorist. While its understandable to be shocked and want something to be done to reduce future shootings, it doesn't make a lot of sense for the average Joe to invest much of their personal time. The average joe no. But school administrators/teachers to get an idea of what is out there is a good place to start. If they find the information useful, maybe hire BLS to give a class to the student body. Education is the key to helping solve this problem.

Education can't hurt, but I don't think it will demonstrably lessen the risk of future shooters killing people.

Alias Detective 1,179 Posted March 15, 2018 If you have twenty kids attacking a shooter, you may be able to stop him in close range. Or they think they'll feel better if they go down fighting. It's high school. Close enough to stab with a pencil - close enough to subdue in my opinion. Maybe elementary school, but high school, college? Stab with their mechanical pencil doesn't get the job done.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted March 15, 2018 They do fire drills in school, why not active shooter drills also? A fire is much more likely, but I have no objection to having rudimentary plans for response to a shooter.
